COMPANY HISTORY
By the second quarter of 1993, the PROTOOL group had become resolute on materializing its objective of setting
up a specialized production facility, to produce and supply Precision Mechanical Limit Gauges to the South-East
Asian market. PROGAGE Precision Engineering Pte Ltd was to be the first of her kind in Singapore.
Directors of the Protool group of companies, with their team of veteran engineers alongside, began structuring the
development of the organization and expedited all the necessary preparations for the various areas of technology
transfer that were vital to this specialised field of engineering.
The new manufacturing premises launched its official public offering of precision gauges by November that year.
In addition to its embarkation on the supply of precision limit gauges , the facility also provided general engineering
services to support and partner with local industries in the following areas :
1. Engineering design services, including (but not limited to) the production and supply of Precision Jigs & Fixtures.
2. Production and supply of Special Purpose Gauges & Precision Threaded Components.
PROGAGE is currently entering into its 18th year of operations as a pioneering, Singapore-based, precision gauge
manufacturer. The company continues to see steady growth in demand for her in-house line of mechanical and
automated gauging instruments, both locally and in neighbouring markets.
VISION
With much emphasis placed primarily on Precision Manufacturing, our company is firmly resolved on becoming
Asias premium supplier of High Quality Precision Measuring Tools.
The globalized engineering industry of today, is all about quality, accuracy and assurance. Hence, ISO Standards
are fast becoming a staple value-added requirement for any business entity hoping to build multi-national
business dealings.
Also, we see that manufacturing houses in Asia are fast becoming recognizable players on a global scale; more
precisely in the areas of large scale MIlitary & Ordance, Aerospace and Automotive Manufacturing. All of them
require sophiscated machinery paired with mechanical precision gauging instruments to calibrate, inspect and
thus preserve accuracy standards throughout the many stages of their production process.
With this in mind, we at PROGAGE take pride in providing you with essential, comphrehensive, accurate and yet
suprisingly cost-effective precision measuring solutions.
PROCESS BIAS
The inherent problem of Centerless Grinding is the 3, 5 or 7 point lobing which occurs during the manufacturing
stage. Most manufacturers simply proceed to lap their gauges for efficiency in size and finish. To the naked
eye, the appearance of the final product is good. In reality however, the lobed segments are still present when
observed under close magnification.
3 - LOBED
5 - LOBED
7 - LOBED
TRUE - ROUND
FINISHING
Add to that an improperly finished or unpolished gauging surface, and all you will be left with is a precision
measuring instrument that is in actuality, unfit for its intended purpose. The microscopic burrs that are present
equate to highly inaccurate measurements as well as rapid wear and tear during your inspection process.

QUALITY ASSURANCE
In real-time application, your Precision Measuring Tool if properly manufactured, should contact a workpiece
evenly at a full 360 degrees inside or around its circumfrence, rather than at 3, 5 or 7 points if lobing were to be
present. The added bonus of a carefully polished gauging surface not only gaurantees longer gauging life but more
importantly, higher levels of accuracy.
Production Errors

AIR SPINDLES.
Air Gauges . Non-contact Type . (Air columns sold seperately) .
Air micrometers are precision comparator type measuring instruments that employ air flow volumes
and air pressure to determine the dimensions of a part in question. Say for example, the diameter of
an internal bore. Its operation is non-contact and is as simple as presenting a tool (an air gauge,
connected to an air column) to a work piece and then observing a reading.
A wide range of hand-held air gauges (officially referred to as Air Spindles), can be purchased inaccordance to your application requirements - i.e. the size or type of bore you are presenting your air
gauge to.
They are connected to an air-flow or digital-type Air Column and are used in the same way you
would use a plain plug gauge.

TAPER GAUGES.
Morse Taper Plugs & Rings . Taper Thread Plugs & Rings .
Taper gages are used to check the taper and reference diameters (diameters of the large and small end faces) of
products with tapered bores or holes. This is a manual type of gauging system consisting of a set of gages fitted
together, namely, a plain taper plug gauge and a plain taper ring gauge.
The depth of a tapered bore that is to be evaluated, can be measured by how deep the reference end face fits
into the gage. The optimum tolerance depth is usually indicated with a notch, or by a line drawn on the larger
end face of the taper plug gauge.
The common types of taper in supply are:
Morse taper
National taper
Brown & Sharp taper.

www.protool-engineering.com
Taper Thread Plug & Ring gauges specified by the ISO 7/1 standard are used to counter-check the tightness in the
seal of threaded parts that require little or no tolerance allowance at all. Say for example, connecting-threads
on components that deal with the transfer of fluids i.e - Piping for the transfer of fuel or industrial oil.
The Taper Thread Plug is used to inspect whether the male taper thread of the pipe and the female taper thread
of the coupling meets density resistance specifications. This then applies vice versa for the Taper Thread Ring.
PROGAGE
BLOCK GAUGES.
Supplied as Box Sets .
A gauge block (also known as a slip gauge or Jo block) is a precision ground (and lapped) length measuring
standard. They are used as a reference for the calibration of precision measuring equipment used in machine
shops, such as micrometers, sine bars, calipers, and dial indicators (tools used in an inspection role) and are still the
main means of length standardization used by the industry today.
Gauge blocks come in sets of blocks of various lengths, along with two wear blocks, to allow a wide variety of
standard lengths to be made up by stacking them. Each gauge block is essentially a block of metal or ceramic
with two opposing faces ground precisely flat and parallel, a precise distance apart. Standard grade blocks are
made of a hardened steel alloy, while our calibration grade blocks are often made of tungsten carbide, a tougher
alloy which renders these blocks harder and more resistant to wear and tear overtime.
In use, select blocks are removed from the set, cleaned of their protective coating (petroleum jelly or oil) and
wrung(1) together, advisably, using the minimum number of blocks to form a stack of the required dimension.
Wear blocks, made of a harder substance like tungsten carbide, are included at each end of the stack whenever
possible, to protect the actual gauge blocks from being damaged or worn down when in use.
Note that gauge blocks are calibrated to be at their most accurate at approximately 20 C and should be kept at
this temperature when taking measurements. This mitigates the effects of thermal expansion. Also, the length of
each block is actually slightly (microns) shorter than the nominal length stamped on it, because the
stamped length includes the length of one wring film, a film of lubricant which separates adjacent block faces
in normal use.

Wringing is the process of sliding two blocks together so that their faces lightly
bond.

SPLINE GAUGES.
Spline Plugs . Spline Rings . Spline Plug & Ring Sets .
Spline gauges are essentially, hand-held go and no-go Plug or Ring gauges for work pieces with splined
protrusions. They are used as a quick inspection method for splines with Involute, Straight-sided and Serrated flanks.
Take for example gauging the accuracy of teethes on gears. The most important aspect when inspecting
splines is probably to check on its usability based on the accuracy of it flanks. These are tested with spline ring
gauges.
Spline gauges are strictly designed according to actual and effective tolerances. In the same way that
other types of limit gauges are manufactured, Gauging Members for Spline Gauges are suitably dimensioned
and manufactured with high levels of stringency so that the GO master fits snugly into or over the machined
area, while the NO-GO master does not.
Spline Gauges manufactured are customer specific. Your work piece drawing should include all necessary dimensions and tolerances.
In cases where customers have no complete drawings, PROTOOL can provide you with design services. Kindly
contact our sales staff or technicians for more details. Finalized gauge drawings will be submitted to customers
for their approval beforeany physical manufacturing takes place.

SNAP GAUGES.
Plain Snap Gauges . Thread Snap Gauges . Adjustable Snap Gauges .
Snap Gauges provide a quick and easy method of checking outside diameters, grooved diameters or width
dimensions. When these gauges are manufactured, GO and NO-GO tolerance dimensions of the component
being checked are set into the snap gauge.
They are oftentimes used when a large quantity of workpieces must be inspected. The snap gauge has four
anvils or jaws, the first one or pair (outermost) are set using the upper limit (GO tolerance) of the part and the
inner set adjusted to the lower limit (NO-GO tolerance) of the part.
A correctly machined part will pass the first set of jaws and stop at the second set of jaws. And thats it, end of test.
In this manner, a part may be checked in one action, unlike the plug gauge that needs to be used twice and
flipped to access the second gauge.
