LEADER:

A reading from the Letter to the Colossians.

(1:15-20)

He is the image of the Invisible God, the first-born

of all creatures.
In him everything in heaven and on
earth was created, things visible and invisible, whether
thrones or dominations, principalities or powers; all
were created through him, and for him. He is before all
else that is.
In him everything continues in being. It
is he who is head of the body, the church; he who is the
the beginning, the first-born of the dead, so that primacy
may be his in everything.
It pleased God to make absolute
fullness reside in him and, by means of him, to reconcile
everything in his person, both on earth and in the heavens,
making peace through the blood of his cross.

LEADER:

Let us now join hands and pray the words that

Jesus taught us.

ALL:

Our Father who art in heaven, hallowed be Thy name.

Thy kindgom corne; Thy will be done on earth as it
is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread,
and forgive us our trepasses as we forgive those
who trepass against us. And lead us not into
temptation, but deliver us from evil.
Amen

FIRST EUCHARIST PARENT MEETING

WEDNESDAY, MARCH 3, 1993

TO THE PARENTS

In their preparation for First Holy Communion, the children are learning
the significance of the Mass as a celebration of God's gift and as a
reenactment of the Last Supper. Here are some suggestions that might help
to prepare your child for his or her part in Mass.

1.
Sometime during the week, if possible, visit the church. Point out
those things your child might miss while Mass is going on: the tabernacle,
the vigil candle, the Stations, and so forth. Explain their significance.

2.
Purchase a picture missal at your local Catholic bookstore. Go
through the book with your child and identify the different sections of the
Mass.

3.
Before Mass, read and discuss the gospel and other readings with your
child. Help him or her to identify with the message.

4.
Arrive at Mass early! Sit as close to the sanctuary as possible.
Nothing turns a child off faster than to be sitting where he or she can see
nothing but the backs of people's heads.

5.
Set an example of the spiritual attitude necessary for being a part of
the Mass by your own prayerful attention. Join heartily in the prayer
response and signing. Encourage your child to do the same.

6.
Encourage your child to follow the Mass in the picture missal or, if
your child's reading ability is advanced enough and if your parish provides
them, a missalette.

7.
On the way horne from Mass, discuss the gospel message once more.
Think of ways you can fit this message into your lives this week.

FIRST EUCHARIST PARENT MEETING
WEDNESDAY, MARCH 3, 1993

PLEASE REVIEW WITH YOUR CHILD

IMPORTANT THINGS TO KNOW:

1.

KNOW THE LIFE OF JESUS:

Son of God Mary, is His mother gave the Holy Eucharist at the
Last Supper The Last Supper was the first mass Jesus died on the
cross for us to save us He rose fr'om the dead, which we celebrate at
Easter Jesus is now in heaven with the Father, and He sends the Holy
Spirit to help us.

2.

KNOW THE DIFFERENCE BETWEEN COMMUNION AND ORDINARY BREAD AND WINE:

When mass begins, the bread and wine are not Jesus They become Jesus
at the Consecration when the priest says the words of Jesus:
"This is
my Body" and "This is my Blood" The bread and wine do not seem
different - they still look and taste the same, but they really are
Jesus This is a mystery and a miracle which we believe because tells
us to believe.

3.

RECEIVING JESUS:

When receiving the Host in your hand, hold out your hands, palms up,
with the hand you use under the other. When you the priest says,
"Body of Christ", you answer "Amen". The host is put in your top hand
and with , the underneath hand, put the host in your mouth and eat it
normally.

4.

FASTING BEFORE COMMUNION:

To remind us of the important thing we are about to do, and in honor

of Jesus, we DO NOT eat or drink anything, except water or medicine
for one hour before Holy Communion.

OUR.. LADY OF THE LAKES

FIRST EUCHARIST PARENT MEETING

WEDNESDAY, MARCH 3, 1993

EUCHARIST IS
The Eucharist Is About BELONGING. The gathering of Christians
around the table of their Lord presupposes a unity, a community,
already existing.
The Eucharist Is About CELEBRATING. The Eucharist is a gathering
of Christians who wish to express with one voice who we are and
who we are called to be.
The opening procession, the prayers, and
the songs of this gathering serve to draw us together in Jesus
Christ, who is the cause of our unity and the origin of our life.
The Eucharist Is About MAKING PEACE. The Eucharist requires of
us that we have the will to reconcile - that we strongly desire to
achieve. the being-at-one that must accompany true peace.
The Eucharist Is About LISTENING.
In this gathering God expresses
His love for us through His word, which places His ultimate gesture
of life-giving love in its proper context so that we can appreciate
it more fully.
Christ is present and experienced in His word.
The Eucharist Is About CARING. We respond to God's love and concerns
for us by voicing our concern for others.
In the prayer of the
Faithful, we are moved by His love for us to express our love for
one another.
The Eucharist Is About GIVING THANKS FOR CREATION.
In the preparation of the gifts and in the Eucharistic Prayer, we give thanks for
all gifts God has given USi for the world and the people in it, for
the many signs of God's love that surround us.
The Eucharists Is About GIVING THANKS FOR NEW LIFE. We give thanks
most of all for God's love for us, manifested to us in His Son, and
for our own life through Christ's death and resurrection.
The Eucharist Is About SHARING A MEAL. Together we share in bread
and wine, the elements of God's creation, for which we have already
acknowledged our gratitude.
In sharing this food and drink in the
Communion Rite, we share in the self-giving of Christ and are
nourished by His life-giving power to create unity.
The Eucharist Is About GOING FORTH TO MAKE A BETTER WORLD. Fortified
by Christ's presence to us in the world, in the bread, and in each
other and sustained by His love, we go forth to share His life, to
respond to His love, to build a world in which there will be no more
evil and death.

OUR LADY OF THE LAKES

FIRST EUCHARIST PARENT MEETING

WEDNESDAY, MARCH 3, 1993

He was old, tired and sweaty,

Pushing his home-made cart
Down the alley, stopping now and
then to poke around in somebody's
garbage.
I wanted to tell him about Eucharist
But the look in his eye,
The despair on his face,
The hopelessness of somebody else's
Life in his cart,
Told me to forget it.
So I smiled, said "Hi"
and gave him Eucharist.
She was cute, nice build,
Too much paint,
A little wobbly on her feet as
she slid from her bar stool,
and very definitely on the make,
"No thanks, not tonight."
And I gave her Eucharist.
She lived alone,
Her husband dead,
Her family gone.
And she talked at you not to you,
Words, endless words, spewed out,
So . I listened and gave her
Eucharist.
Downtown is nice,
Lights change from red to green
And back again,
Flashing blues, pinks and oranges
I gulped them in,
Said, "Thank you, Father,"
And made them Eucharist.
I laughed at myself,
And told myself,
"You with all your sins,
All your selfishness,
I forgive you,
I accept you,
I love you".
It's nice and so necessary too,
To give yourself Eucharist.

Tired, weary, disgusted, lonely

Go to your friends,
Open your door,
Say, "look at me"
And receive their Eucharist.
My Father, when will we learn
You cannot talk Eucharist
Cannot philosophize about it,
You do it.
You don't dogmatize Eucharist,
Sometimes you laugh it,
Sometimes you cry it,
often you sing it.
Sometimes it's wild peace,
Then crying hurt,
Often humiliating,
Never deserved.
You see Eucharist in another's eyes
Give it in another's hand held tight.
Squeeze it with an embrace,
You pause Eucharist in the middle
of a busy day.
Speak Eucharist with a million
Things to do and a person who wants
to talk. For Eucharist is as simple
as being on time, and as profound as
sympathy.
I
I
I
I
I

gave
give
give
give
give

you my supper,
you my sustinence,
you my life,
you me,
you . Eucharist.

We pray a thank-you prayer

to God for the gift of his only Son.
On a special, happy day,
how does your family
celebrate?
Do you have a party?
Do you share a special meal?
Do you pray together?
Do you talk and remember
good times?
Do you sing and hug and laugh?
Do you sometimes .
exchange gifts?
Family celebrations are fun!
They are filled with family love.
Do you know how
the family of God
celebrates together?
They come together in Holy Mass
to sing and talk
and remember God
and the gift Jesus gave
of himself.
At the very beginning of Mass,
we usually sing out with joy.
We are happy to be together
as a family again.
Then we listen to God's Word.
We learn about the Father's love.
We hear wonderful stories
about Jesus.
The priest tells us how we can be
good and happy children
of God.
Now comes the very best part.
We celebrate the special meal
that Jesus shared
~ with his friends
on the night before he died.

When the priest says

the words of Jesus:
"This is my Body ...
This is my Blood,"
we remember the
happy Easter surprise "Christ has died,
Christ is risen,
Christ will corne again."
Jesus becomes real food for us
in the bread and in the wine.
We pray the prayer
Jesus taught us.
We shake hands
with all our neighbors.
We remember
that we are a family
because we have all
been baptized
as brothers and sisters of Jesus.
Then we share the special food
Jesus gave usthe gift of himself
in Holy Communion.
We share this gift in joy
and thanksgiving,
for the gift itself and for -the
"togetherness" we feel
as members of God's family.
After Mass is over, Father says,
"Go in peace to love
and serve the Lord."
Our family celebration
does not end.
For now it's time for us to go out
and celebrate God's love
:
with e veryone we meet.
