Gospel (Luke 2:41-52)

Letter (Hebrews 7:11-19)

A reading from the letter to the Hebrews, your blessings father
Brothers and sisters, Now if perfection had been attainable through the levitical
priesthood for the people received the law under this priesthood what further need
would there have been to speak of another priest arising according to the order of
Melchizedek, rather than one according to the order of Aaron? For when there is a change
in the priesthood, there is necessarily a change in the law as well. Now the one of whom
these things are spoken belonged to another tribe, from which no one has ever served at
the altar. For it is evident that our Lord was descended from Judah, and in connection with
that tribe Moses said nothing about priests. It is even more obvious when another priest
arises, resembling Melchizedek, one who has become a priest, not through a legal
requirement concerning physical descent, but through the power of an indestructible life.
For it is attested of him, You are a priest forever, according to the order of Melchizedek.
There is, on the one hand, the abrogation of an earlier commandment because it was
weak and ineffectual (for the law made nothing perfect); there is, on the other hand, the
introduction of a better hope, through which we approach God. Praise be to God always.

The Evangelist said: Now every year his

parents went to Jerusalem for the
festival of the Passover. And when he
was twelve years old, they went up as
usual for the festival. When the festival
was ended and they started to return,
the boy Jesus stayed behind in
Jerusalem, but his parents did not know
it. Assuming that he was in the group of
travelers, they went a days journey.
Then they started to look for him among
their relatives and friends. When they did
not find him, they returned to Jerusalem
to search for him. After three days they
found him in the temple, sitting among
the teachers, listening to them and
asking them questions. And all who
heard him were amazed at his
understanding and his answers. When
his parents saw him they were
astonished; and his mother said to him,
Child, why have you treated us like this?
Look, your father and I have been
searching for you in great anxiety. He
said to them, Why were you searching
for me? Did you not know that I must be
in my Fathers house? But they did not
understand what he said to them. Then
he went down with them and came to
Nazareth, and was obedient to them. His
mother treasured all these things in her
heart. And Jesus increased in wisdom
and in years, and in divine and human
favor. This is the truth. Peace be
with you.

The Glorious Epiphany . January 6

Letter (Titus 2:11-3:7)
A reading from the letter of Saint Paul the Apostle to his disciple Titus, your blessing father
Brothers and sisters, The grace of God has appeared, bringing salvation to all, training us to
renounce impiety and worldly passions, and in the present age to live lives that are selfcontrolled, upright, and godly, while we wait for the blessed hope and the manifestation of the
glory of our great God and Savior, Jesus Christ. He it is who gave himself for us that he might
redeem us from all iniquity and purify for himself a people of his own who are zealous for good
deeds. Declare these things; exhort and reprove with all authority. Let no one look down on
you. Remind them to be subject to rulers and authorities, to be obedient, to be ready for every
good work, to speak evil of no one, to avoid quarreling, to be gentle, and to show every
courtesy to everyone. For we ourselves were once foolish, disobedient, led astray, slaves to
various passions and pleasures, passing our days in malice and envy, despicable, hating one
another. But when the goodness and loving kindness of God our Savior appeared, he saved
us, not because of any works of righteousness that we had done, but according to his mercy,
through the water of rebirth and renewal by the Holy Spirit. This Spirit he poured out on us
richly through Jesus Christ our Savior, so that, having been justified by his grace, we might
become heirs according to the hope of eternal life. Praise be to God always.

Gospel (Luke 3:15-22)
The Evangelist said: As the people were filled with expectation, and all were questioning in their
hearts concerning John, whether he might be the Messiah, John answered all of them by
saying, I baptize you with water; but one who is more powerful than I is coming; I am not
worthy to untie the thong of his sandals. He will baptize you with the Holy Spirit and fire. His
winnowing fork is in his hand, to clear his threshing floor and to gather the wheat into his
granary; but the chaff he will burn with unquenchable fire. So, with many other exhortations, he
proclaimed the good news to the people. But Herod the ruler, who had been rebuked by him
because of Herodias, his brothers wife, and because of all the evil things that Herod had done,
added to them all by shutting up John in prison. Now when all the people were baptized, and
when Jesus also had been baptized and was praying, the heaven was opened, and the Holy
Spirit descended upon him in bodily form like a dove. And a voice came from heaven, You are
my Son, the Beloved; with you I am well pleased. This is the truth. Peace be with you.
