*Preliminary Assessment
Find the product of (3x + 4)(3x 4).
a = 3x and b = 4.
(3x + 4)(3x 4) = (3x)2 (4)2
Simplify.
(3x + 4)(3x 4) = 9x2 16

3. Solve the following example of products

using algebra tiles.
a. (x+1)(x-1)

step solution.

b. (2x+1)(2x-1)

4x2-1

4. Present the following using meta cards

a. (X+4)(x-4)
b. (x+2)(x-2)

B. Presentation
1. Present the product of sum and difference
of two number
The sum of the two numbers x and 4 represented
by x+4 is multiplied by their differences
represented by x-4.
(x+4)(x-4)=x2+4x-4x-y2
(x+4)(x-4)=x2-y2
The product of the sum and difference is the
difference of the squares of those two numbers

2. state the pattern of difference of two square

For all numbers x and y:
(x+y)(x-y)=x2-y2

3. Give example of difference of two square

pattern
Use the difference of two squares pattern.
Here x=4t and y=9, Thus:
(4t+9)(4t-9)=4t2-92
=16t2-81
Check: Test a special case. Let t=5
(4x5+9) (4x5-9)=(29)(11)= 319
16(5)2-81=16(25)-81=319
-

4. Compute (41)(39) using the pattern of

difference of two square

(41)(39) = (40+1)(40-1)
= 402-12
=1600-1
=1599

5. Use algebra tiles to represent a figure

whose area is given by the expression
(3x+4)(3x-4)

9x2-16

C. Generalization
Fill in the blank to make a true statement.
1. The product of a sum and a difference of
the same two terms is equal to the
_______.
2. If we multiply the sum a+b and the
difference a-b using the foil method, the
inner and outer product have a sum of
______.
3. The first term of the product 11x+2 and 11x2 is _____. The last term in this product is
_____.

volume of a box with sides 3x+7 and 3x-7 and
height 4x.
Solution:
V=lwh
