DESCRIPTION

SikaProofBentoniteisaneedlepunchedthermallylockedGeosynthetic
ClayLiner(GCL)usedtowaterproofbelowgroundconcretestructures.
SikaProofBentoniteisawaterproofingsystemwhichefficientlyprotects
reinforcedconcretestructures,preventingthepenetrationofwaterand
subsequentattackbyaggressivechemicalsubstancespresentinthe
surroundingsoil.
SikaProofBentoniteismanufacturedinAustraliainaccordancewiththe
ISO9001:2000QualityManagementSystemandconsistsofhighquality
polypropylenegeotextilesandpremiumgradenaturalsodiumbentonite.
SikaProofBentoniteisfibrereinforcedbyneedlepunchingtheproduct
acrossitsentirelengthandwidth.Thehighstrengthfibresarethen
thermallylockedtoensurethehighselfconfiningpropertiesofSikaProof

INSTRUCTIONSFORUSE

SURFACEPREPARATION
Basecoursesubstratesshouldbesmooth,firmandunyielding
(typicallycompactedto>90%StandardProctordensity).Sandshall
notbeusedasthesubstrateasitdoesnotprovideadequate
confiningpressure.
SikaProofBentonitecanbeappliedtodampconcrete,however,
concretemustbeatleast48hoursoldandmustbefreefromstanding
water.
Masonrysurfacesandconcretesurfacesshallbesmoothandeven,
withnoabruptdeviations.
Alldamage,holesandcracksinmasonrysubstratesmustberepaired
withtheappropriateSikaMonoToprepairsystem.
MasonrysurfacesshallbebaggedwithSikaMonoTop723Norother
appropriatecementbasedmortarorwithSikaProofBentonitepaste,
asshallconcretesurfaceswithblowholesandminorimperfections
Mortarjointsinmasonryblockworkmustbefinishedflushwiththe
surface.IfmortarjointshavebeenpointedapplySikaMonoTop723N
levellingmortarorotherappropriatecementbasedmortartojointsto
makeflushwithsurface.
TieboltholesmustbefilledwithSikaGrout212,proprietarynon
shrinkgrout.
Keepthesitewatertablelevelatleast300mmbelowthelevelofthe
baseorsiteconcreteduringthetankingprocess.
CompleteanysubstrateremedialworkpriortoanySikaProof
Bentoniteapplicationorplacement.
Substratepreparationshallbeapprovedbythedesigner/engineer
priortoinstallationofthewaterproofingbarrier.

APPLICATIONMETHOD

UNDERCONCRETESLABS
PriortotheinstallationofSikaProofBentoniteunderconcreteslabs,
anoptionalblindinglayerofleanmixsiteconcretecanbeplaced.This
layershouldhaveatypicalthicknessof50mmandprovidealevel
workingplatformfortheplacementoftheSikaProofBentonite.The
completedlayershouldhaveasmoothsurfaceandbefreefrom
debris.
SikaProofBentoniteisinstalledbysimplyrollingouttheproduct,
yellowsideuppermost.Ensuretheoverlapareaiscleanandfreefrom
anydebrisanddistortion.Watertightoverlapsareachievedby
overlappingSikaProofBentoniteby150mm,withSikaProofBentonite
Pasteappliedentirelyintheoverlapregionandprotruding
approximately50mmpasttheoverlap.Endsofrollsshouldbe
staggeredanda300mmoverlapisrequired.
Beforetheconcreteslabispoured,ensuretheSikaProofBentoniteis
extendedaminimumof300mmbeyondtheedgeofconcretework
andprotecttoallowcorrectoverlappingtoanyfurtherconnectionor
verticalwallplacement.
Theoverlapsshouldallruninauniformdirection.Thefreshconcrete
shouldbeplacedinthedirectionofoverlappingtoavoidpushingwet
concreteundertheoverlaps.
SikaProofBentoniteistypicallyinstalledwiththenonwoven(yellow)
sidefacingupwardsforcastinsituconcreteapplications.Thiswill
enabletheSikaProofBentonitetoformatenaciousbondwiththe
concreteslab

VERTICALCONCRETEWALLS
TheinstallationofSikaProofBentonitetoverticalconcretewalls
requiresprecuttingoflengthstosuitthewallheight.Sideoverlapsin
theSikaProofBentoniteshallbeaminimum150mmwide.Thetopof
eachlengthofSikaProofBentoniteshallbefixedtotheconcrete(if
postfixed)orformwork(ifprefixed)atmax.300centresalongthetop
edgeandwithintheendoverlaparea.
Endofrolloverlapsshouldbeaminimumof300mmandstaggereda
minimumof300mmawayfromeachother.EnsurethatSikaProof
Bentoniteoverlapsdonotcoincidewithconstructionjoints.The
overlapsmustbeflatandwrinklefreetoensureagoodintimate
contactwiththeconcreteandthebackfill.
Theoverlapbetweenthefloorslabwaterproofingandthewall
waterproofingshouldbeaminimumof300mmandfullypastedinthe
lapwithSikaProofBentonitePaste.AnadditionalSikaProofBentonite
barrierstrip,400mmwidecanbeused.Thisshouldbeplaceddirectly
overtheconstructionjoint,runningparalleltoitsothattheoverlap
areasofthelinersattheconnectionarefullysealed.
ThemethodofplacementandorientationofSikaProofBentonitewill
dependonwhetherthewalliscastinsituorprecast.
Forcastinsituconcretewalls,SikaProofBentoniteshouldbe
orientatedsothatthenonwoven(yellow)surfaceisfacingthepour
ie.woven(white)sideisfixedtotheformwork.
Forprecastconcretewalls,SikaProofBentoniteshouldbeattachedto
thewallfacebynailingwithHiltiXSW30mmsoftwasherfixings,
ensuringthatthewoven(white)sideisincontactwiththeconcrete.
Alternatively,SikaProofBentonitecanbeplacedinthepanelbed
(yellowsideup)priortotheconcretepanelbeingpoured.

BACKFILLING
WhenSikaProofBentoniteisbeingusedasadampproofmembrane,
backfilling,drainageandthebackfillcappingmustbecompletedin
accordancewithNZBCAcceptableSolutionE2/AS1,paragraphs12.3,
12.3.1andfigure133.Corfluteorsimilarlyrigidprotectionshouldbe
placedagainsttheinstalledSikaProofBentoniteforconfinementprior
tobackfillingwithgranularfreedrainingbackfill.
WhenSikaProofBentoniteisbeingusedasatankingmembranethe
backfillmaterialmustbefreefrombuildersdebrisandangular
aggregateandmustbecompactedto85%modifiedproctordensity.
Sanddoesnotprovideadequateconfiningpressureandshallnotbe
usedasbackfill.

IMPORTANTNOTES

AlwaysstoreSikaProofBentoniteandaccessoryproductsinadryarea,
laidflatandprotectedwithpolyethylenesheet.Storeproductssothat
theyarenotincontactwiththeground.
SikaProofBentoniterequiresconfinementfromminimum150mmthick
reinforceconcretewallsorfloorslabs.
Ensureallmovementandconstructionjointsaredetailedwiththe
appropriateSikaPVCWaterbarorSikaSwellwaterstop.
Topreventthepossibleintrusionofsoilorothermaterialsbetween
thepaneledgesofSikaProofBentoniteatgroundlevelandthe
structure,aterminationbarshouldbeinstalled.Itshouldbeattached
tothestructure,byfixingat300mmcentres,slightlybelowthetanking
line(100to150mm)aroundthewholestructure.Anondegradable
barorbattenisrecommendedforthispurpose.
