SEMESTER 2 2014/2015
Instruction to students:
1. This is an individual assignment 2 that accounts for 10% of the total marks for
the course
2. This assignment contains THREE (3) question only
3. You can answer in Malay or English
4. Write down your name, students card number
5. Your assignment is to be submitted on the thirth meeting

Question 1
In previous survey, it was found that the probability of all patients with high blood pressure have bad
side effects from a certain kind of medicine is 25 percent. Assume that it was distributed with
Binomial distribution where the patients with high blood pressure have bad side effects from a certain
kind of medicine have the same probability and independent. A sample of 20 patients is selected.
a)
b)
c)
d)
e)

What is the probability that none of the patients have the bad side effects
What is the probability that less than 8 patients have the bad side effects
What is the probability that at least 10 patients have the bad side effects
Find the mean of the patients who have no side effects.
Find the variance of the patients who have side effects.

(10 marks)

Answers Q1

Since 20 patients are selcted at random, then n=20

Let probability of success, i.e. patients with high blood, p=0.25
Let probability of failure, i.e. patients none have the bad side effects, q(1-0.25)=0.75
Therefore, the binomial random variable, X can be written as X

What is the probability that none of the patients have the bad side effects
