TheNephandi.Darkmagessymbolizingallthatiscorrupt,destructive,andevil.TheTechnocracy
saysthattheyhavebanishedDarkOnestobeyondtheGauntlet(theNephandiknowthetruth).The
TraditionsthinkthatavoidanceandconflictaretheonlywaystobesafefromtheDarkOnes(the
Nephandiknowthetruth).EventheMarauders,atleastthosewhopondertheDarkOnesatall,feel
safeintheirmadness(theNephandiknowthetruth).It'sextremelyironicthatinordertodefend
themselvesfromdeceptionanddeceit,theotherfactionscreatemoredeceptionanddeceitasashield.
AjoketheNephandirelishin.
MOTIVATIONS
ManymageswonderwhyNephandiexist,iftheydon'thavesomehighergoalorpurposeinthegrand
scheme.PerhapstheNephandihavethebestanswers:rebuildthecosmosbytearingitdown,andto
provideasourceofcontrastagainstthe"lightofpurity".But,byfar,thelargestgrouparethosewho
simplyrelishtheevilandpaintheyspread.
ManyNephandisupportandbelieveintheTriatoftheWyld,Weaver,andWyrm.TheseNephandi
(usually,butnotalways,Malfean)believethattheWyrmservesavitalfunctioninthecosmos,by
providingabalance(albeitabalancebasedondestruction)betweentheWeaverandtheWyld.The
current"madnessoftheWyrm"(assomanyliketocallit)istheresultofsomeotherfaction.It'sbeen
saidthattheWeaverwentmadandtriedtocaptureeverythinginanintricatepatternthatdrovethe
Wyrminsane.And,asanystudentoftheTriatwilladmit,whatothersourceformadnesscouldexist
butthatoftheWyld?TheWyrmistrulyinnocent,entrappedinaflawedTapestrytryingtocreatea
balanceinahideouslyflawedandchaoticcosmoswhichtheycallthe"FlawedDesign".
ThosewhoservetheWeaverandWyldaredupes,helpingtoprotectandpromotethegrowthofthe

FlawedDesign.TheyseektoexistinaTapestrywithoutbalance,withoutpurposeorreason.A
Tapestrythatflipflopsbetweenorderandchaos,wherebalancecanneverhopetocatchupandlevel
thetwoout.NephandiwhosupporttheFlawedDesignseekonlytomaketheTapestryabetterplace.
Butthisisonlyhalfthetruth.
PerhapstheTapestrytrulyisflawed,perhapstheseNephandiaretrulyservingabetterpurpose,but
theydon'tcareeitherway.Theyrapeandmurderto,asonescholarofNephandiputit,"send'emall
downthehole".Theyspreadpainandanguish,seektounleashtheirNephandiLords,seekanendto
hopeandjoy,alltofurtherspeedthedestructionoftheTapestry.ButwhatmakestheseNephandi
trulyvileisthattheyENJOYwhattheydo.ANephandimightthinkthathe'srapingawomanto
shatterherwilltolive,tospreadfearamongthosewhowillhearthestory,tobroadenthegapbetween
menandwomen,butinfacttheNephandijustgetsoffonfeelingmorepowerfulthanthewoman,
takingwhathewants,andmakingherhurt.Despitehisloftyidealsandwords,heknowsheisjust
evil.ManyotherfactionsandbeingsbelieveinandsupporttheFlawedDesignbytryingtotearit
down,buttheydon'tenjoywhattheyhavetodo.ItisthisfactorthatseparatestheNephandifrom
others.
ButalargepercentageNephandiscoffattheideaoftheWyrmandtheTriat,andperceivetheirroles
differently.TheyfindtheideaoftheTriattobetooconfining,too"neat",tobetrulyapplicabletoall
ofreality.Instead,theyseethemselvesservingentropyanddestructioninsomeformoranother(with
onlythenameoftheircausetrulydiffering).
SomefewNephandiclaimthattheyprovidea"Shadow"forgoodness.Theygivemankindasourceof
conflictandstruggletofurtherstrengthentheentirerace.ManyWidderslaintesliketoclaimthatsince
theywerebornevil,thePowersthatBe(TheOne,ThePureOnes,TheTriat,etc.)madethemthat
wayforapurpose,andbybeingeviltheyarefulfillingthatpurpose.Theyclaimthatfulfillingthat
purpose(whetherasakilleroravictim)isthegreatestgoodthatcanbedone,asitcomplieswithwhat
thePowersthatBewant.
TheShadowsconstantlytestandchallengethegoodnessofothers,temptingtheminathousandways
tosuccumbtosomeformofdarknessoranother.AndshouldtheShadowbedefeatedbythegood,
thanthatisalsowilled.But,ShadowsaresomeofthemostvileandrelentlessofNephandi,asthey
neverquestiontheiractions:theyweremadeevil,andsoeviltheywillbe.Noactistoohorrible,no
actisquestionedforevenasecond.Shadowswouldrapetheirowngrandmothersaspartofaritualto
condemnhersoultooblivionandsaythatitwasa"goodthingtodo".
Finally,thevastmajorityofNephandijustliketodowhatevertheywant.Theyclaimthatthey,unlike
others,havetruefreedom.Theycandowhatevertheywantandnotfeelhamperedwithguiltorother
emotions.Theycallthemselves"Daimons",andclaimnonoblepurposeorreasonforwhattheydo.
Theystrivetobeasvileastheycan,alwaysseekingtoprovethattheydeservethetitle"Nephandus".
WhenDaimonsorganizeagroupofblackMuslimstopreachaboutheavenbeingaplacewherewhite
babiesarekilledbythethousandstheyaren'ttryingtouniteandorganizepeople,theyjustwantto
driveawedgebetweenbothracesandpromotehomicide,hatred,anddistrust.SomeNephandimay
actuallymeanwellincasessuchasthese,buteventhentheirinfluencecanleadonlytoruinationfor
thosetheytrytoaid.However,thepathoftheDaimonisultimatelyoneofhedonism,andnot
enlightenment(eventhetwistedenlightenmenttheseNephandipursue).AmeagerfewDescendthis
way,butthemajoritybecomeentrappedwithintheirownsadisticpleasures.
Itshouldalsobepointedoutthatsomemagesarelabeled"Nephandi",wheninfacttheyarenot.The
EuthanatoshavealonghistoryofbeingbrandedasNephandi,andtheCelestialChorushavelabeled
thoseofotherTraditionsasbeingInfernalfromtimetotime.However,justbecauseamagecalls
anothermageNephandusdoesnottrulymeananything.Thefalselyaccusedmagewillnotbecome
moreevilforinstance.However,theaccusedNephandusmayturntotrueNephandiforthesakeof

survival,asformeralliesandfriendstrytohunthimdown.
DEVIANTSVS.DIABOLICALS
Beforegoinganyfurther,oneshouldunderstandacrucialdifferencebetweenthetwolargest
"behaviorpatterns"amongNephandi,theDeviants(whodealoutthemorepersonalandsmallscale
manipulationsandpain)andtheDiabolicals(whoactinhugeschemesaffectingentirecities,nations,
andsometimestheworld).
Perhapsthebestwaytoillustratethisschismiswithachildraping.ADeviantNephanduswouldrape
achildtoshatterthechild'sheart,breakhiswill,andforcehimtoliveinfearandshamefortherestof
hislife.TheDeviantknowsthathisactions,despitetheirsmallscalewillnotonlyhaveanimmediate
effect,butwillalsoripplethroughouttheentirechild'slifeandthelivesofthosehecomesintocontact
with.Asthechildgrowshemaybecomeemotionallydisturbed,andmayturntorapingchildren
himself,orabusehiswife,oranyofadozenotherevils.
ADiabolicalNephanduswillapproachachildrapingfromadifferentangle,seekingtospreadthe
mostharmtothegreatestnumberofpeople.Typically,thechildrapingwillbeonlypartofagrander
scheme,withacombinationofotherevils,disguises,andmanipulations,thatculminateinahuge
reworkingoftheentiresocialparadigm.Thischangemaytakedecadestofullyrealize,andcanbe
stoppedearlyon,buttheamountofdamageitdoesintheendfarexceedsthe"smallscale"tacticsofa
Deviants.Tofurthertheexample,perhapstheDiabolicalrapedthechildwhiledisguisedasadevout
Catholicpriest.TheDiabolicalsthenduplicatethisrapewithsimilarrapingsacrossthecountry,
leadingtoanevergrowingdistrustoftheChurch,andanabandonmentofthesocialunityandhopeit
mightprovide.
ButdespitethescaleoftheNephandi'sgoals,hemustalwayskeepinmindhisultimategoal:Descent.
WhenaNephandikillsaman,rapesawoman,orsellscracktochildren,hemustbecareful.Ifhekills
forpleasure,rapesforlust,orsellsformoney,hehaslefttheroadtoDescentandinsteadmerely
fulfillshismundaneurges.Butifhekills,rapes,andsellsoutofadesirefordestruction,andnotjust
hisownpleasure,thenhemaysomedayDescend.Justasanyothermage,aNephandimustmake
enlightenment(inwhateverformhechooses)hisfirstpriority.
METHODSOFOPERATION
TheNephandiaremuchlikeothermagesinthattheywilldoanythinginordertofurthertheirgoals.
However,whileotherTraditionsseektosavetheworld,theNephandiseekitsdestruction.
TheNephandihavenumerousstrengthsovertheotherfactionsintheAscensionWar.Theyuse
MythicThreadstopromoteallmannersofevilanddarkness.Ouijaboardsareusedascoincidental
meanstopossessothers,pornographyallowstheNephanditoturnapersonintoasexcrazedrapist
andtormentorofwomen,"carbonated,fastfood,cheapmunchies"allowaNephanditotargeta
personwithallmannersofcancer,alcoholallowsfordrunkenmurders,andsoonForsome
interestingexamplesofMythicThreadsemployedbyNephandiagoodexampleisthe"Midnight
Cabaret"(byme).
ButwhateveraNephandidoes,heultimatelyseeksthedestructionofallthroughthespreadingof
corruptionanddestruction.Hatred,fear,violence,selfishness,andeveryother"sin"spreadthrough
everyman,woman,andchildisthegoal.ANephandiwon'tjusthaveamanrapeawomanorchild,
he'llhaveawhitemanrapeablackwomanoraHispanicchild(oranyofahundredotherethnic
combinations)inordertopromoteracialhatredandterroramongbothcommunities(usuallyby
having"retaliatorycrimes"committedbythevictimizedgroup).Oncethecyclestarts,theNephandi
needdonothingmore.Therippleshestartedwithhisevilwillspreadandcontinueontheirown.

Pain,suffering,andlossareothergoalstheNephandiseek,tofurtherdetachpeoplefromtheir
concernsormorals.Peoplefindithardertocareaboutanythingoranyonewhentheyfeelthatthey
havenoreasonlefttolive.Whetherit'sbyhugenaturaldisasters(suchasvolcanoesandhurricanes),
ormorepersonalones(suchasamurderorabrutalgangrape),theNephandispreadsthepainand
lossand(mostimportantly)thefeelingthattheworldisNOTjust.Oncepeoplestartthinkinginthese
termstheyareeasypreyfortheNephandi'sothermanipulations.ManyaSleeperhasbeennearly
killedbyaNephandi'sattacks,Awakened,andsubsequentlyjoinedtheNephandiduetofeelingsof
angerandindifferencetowardstheworld.
FACTIONS
ThereareperhapsfiveknowntypesoffactionsamongNephandi:Infernalists,Malfeans,Outsiders,
K'llasshaa,andUnclaimed.Eachfactionisdifferentfromtheothers,pursuingdifferent(andyet
similar)goals.
TheInfernalistsmakepactswithdemons,offeringtheirsouls(andthesoulsofothers)inexchangefor
power.Theyusuallyhaveanintimateunderstandingofdemonichierarchiesandpowerstructures.
Theyseektospreadmoralcorruptionandevil,andtoappeasetheirmasters.Thesoulsofthegood,
andthesoulsoftheinnocentaretheirgreatestofferingstotheirdemonicoverlords.Infernalistsdonot
usuallyworshiptheirmasters,insteadfeigningdevotioninreturnforfavoritismandpower.Many
Infernalistsgrowtofeartheirmastersastheirtimedrawscloseandtheirsoulssoonbecomeforfeit,
butbythentheyhaveusuallycommittedsomuchevilthattheyrefusetoletthemselvescareandcan't
reclaimtheirsoulsanyway.
MalfeansareaspecializedgroupofcorruptersanddestroyersservingtheIncarnaofMalfeas.They
seektospreadbothspiritualandworldlypollution,destroyingandruiningeverythingforever.Their
greatestdreamisofaworldbathedintheatomicglowofamillionnuclearexplosions,leaving
nothingbutadeadlumpofrock,andthentheyplottoputouttheverystars.Thepowertheirmasters
offerthemisgreat,butcorruptive,causingthosewhoarerewardedwithitimmensepainand
disfigurement.UnlikeInfernalistshowever,MalfeansservetheWyrmina(comparatively)freeand
individualisticmanner.Theirservitudeisfairlychaoticandrandom,asthemadnessoftheWyrmfills
theirmindsandsouls.
TheOutsidersworshipalienbeings,beyondthecomprehensionofhumanity.WhileotherNephandi
servebeingsthatcouldbeconsideredtobespiritualrepresentationsofhumanevil,theOutsiderscan
makenosuchclaimtheirmastershavenoconnectionwithhumanity.Itistheutterlyaliennatureof
thesemastersthatdrivesmanyOutsiderstomadness.WhattheOutsidersseekisuncertain,some
claimthatbydestroyingalloftheTapestrytheirmasterswillbesetfree,othersclaimthattheir
mastersseekonlythefleshandsoulsofhumanitytofeedupon.Whileotherfactionsplotagainst(and
occasionallyassassinate)oneanother,theOutsiderareactivelyengagedinan"unholywar"amongst
themselves,witheachcabalofOutsidertryingtokillalltheother"unbelievers".However,Outsiders
differfromotherNephandinotonlyintheirworshipofforcesfrombeyondbutalsotheir
(comparatively)genuinedevotiontotheirmasters.WhereasanInfernalistservesMolochforpower
alone,anOutsiderservesZidrosforpowerandZidros'"love".
TheUnclaimedareaninterestinglot.Theyclaimnomaster(andinreturnarenotclaimed
themselves),andworkfortheirownreasonsandgoals.Whiletheycannotcalluponthepowerand
resourcesofamaster,liketheotherfactionscan,theycantrulyclaimtheirsoulastheirown.Many
Nephandistartoutthisway(onlytojoinanotherfactionlater,andbecome"claimed"),whileothers
defectfromtheirmastersandtrytogosolo(foranexample,seetheJadeDemon,inthe"Bookof
Chantries").However,eventhosethatdefectfromtheirmastersusuallyfindtheirsoulsforfeit(asin
thecaseoftheJadeDemon).
TheK'llasshaaareafascinatinggroupofNephandi,fortheyarealsoMarauders.Evenamongthe

Nephandi,therearesomemageswhoaretoounstable,toodynamic,tootouchedinthehead,tobe
JUSTaNephandi.WhiletheOutsidersandMalfeanshavethelargestnumbersofK'llasshaa(most
likelyduetotheutterlyaliennatureoftheOutsiders'mastersandtheWyrm),thesemadDarkOnes
existineveryfaction.K'llasshaaInfernalists,Malfeans,Outsiders,andUnclaimedallexist.Immune
toParadoxandutterlyinsane,theK'llasshaastandoutevenamongotherNephandi,andarethesource
ofatleastsome(butnotall)oftheterrorandevilothermagesattributetoMaraudersasawhole.One
exampleofaK'llasshaawouldbeExcratakali(see"TheMarauderPapers"byme).
Itiscertainthatothergroupsexist,butdetailsofsuchremainsketchy.Severalreportsindicatea
factionservingOblivion,butmostagreethatsuchmageswouldjustbeOutsidersandnottheirown
uniquefaction.
SYNDICATEPENTEXLINK
Theshadowy,giganticcorporationknownas"Pentex"(see"BookoftheWyrm").Thissingle
companycontrolsvastnumbersofbusinesses,organizations,and(inafewcases,suchasinSouth
AmericaandAfrica)nationalgovernments.Theybuy,sell,andcontrolanyaspectofanindustryoran
economytheywant.AndtheSyndicateletsthemgetawaywithitall.
Sortof.
WhiletheSyndicatehadbeenmonitoringtheentiregrowthanddevelopmentofPentex,the
Technocracywasplanningtoinstallacommuniststateacrosstheworld.TheSyndicate,forreasons
notfullyunderstood,unitedinangeragainsttheotherConventionsandallowedPentex'spowerto
growunchallenged.Then,justastheNewWorldOrderbegantoinstallaseriesofeventsleadingtoa
worldwidecommuniststate,theSyndicaterevealed"thePentexnestofhornets",andwarnedthata
communistsocietywouldanger"thePentexnest"andsend"thehornetsonarampage".
TheSyndicateclaimedthatPentexhadusedmembersoftheirAwakenedalliesaswellasNephandi
spieswithintheSyndicate(actually,procommunistSyndicatemages)tohidetheirspreadandpower.
TheTechnocracy,distrustfuloftheSyndicatebutnotknowingwhattodo,turnedtothe
Economancersforadvice.Theiradvice:supportCommunismwhereithadalreadybeenestablished
(whichwasjusttheUSSRandChinaandafewsmallercountriesbesides),butwaituntilPentexcould
bestoppedtoallowCommunismtospread.Withacapitalisteconomy,Pentexcouldbewatched,
controlled,andeventuallyeradicated.
TheTechnocracyagreed,andbeganplottingthedownfallofPentex.Butbythen,thedamagewas
done.TheSyndicatewasastoundedbythesizeandpowerthatPentexhadaccumulated,andthe
effectivenessthatPentexkeptitsholdings.WhatwasevenmoreterrifyingwasthenumberofREAL
NephandiwithintheSyndicateitself.Asecret"selfpurging"beganastheSyndicatetriedtoremove
alltheNephandiwithinitsranks,withoutlettingtheotherConventionsknowwhatwasgoingon.As
thepurgecontinued,theSyndicatewasunabletodevoteit'senergiestowardsdefeatingPentex,and
theWyrmCorporationcontinuedtogrow.
BythetimetheSyndicatewasabletorecover,thedamagehadbeendone.
THETECHNOCRACYPENTEXCOVERUP
Pentexcontrolledvastamountsoftheworld'seconomyandindustry,andtheirfomoriandcorruption
werethreateningtoengulftheglobe.TheTechnocracyhadfailedintheirdutyofprotectingmankind.
Andsotheytriedtocorrectthesituation.
TheheadsoftheSyndicate,responsibleforallowingPentextogrow,wereinterrogated(andworse)

forinformation.Asthefullpicturebegantoform,manyamongtheSyndicatefledfortheirverylives.
Noneescaped.TheTechnocracyacknowledgedthatthetimewasn'trightforcommunism,butthe
Syndicatehadgonetoofar.Thedamagehadbeendonethough',andtheSyndicatewassparedtotal
destructioninordertocompetewithPentex.But,anewproblemwasrevealed.
Pentexhadgrownsobigandabsorbedsomanycompanies(andsmallgovernments)thatifitwere
simplydestroyedinone(huge)battle,theentireeconomyoftheworldmightcollapse,plungingthe
planetintoastateofchaosandanarchythatwouldallowtheNephandi(andMarauders)aneven
GREATERholdontheplanet.And,asPentexgrewanditscorruptionspread,thenumberof
Nephandibeingencounteredincreased.Pentexwasneededtosupporttheverysocial/economic
structureoftheplanet.So,inordertopreventthedestructionofsociety,theTechnocracydecidedto
wagethewarinadifferentway.
TheysenttheTraditionsafterPentexandtheNephandi.
Bysubtlyplantingcluesandcomments,theTechnocracymanipulatedTraditionmagestochallenge
theNephandi.Ifthemagefails,mostlikelytheNephandiwillstillbesoftenedupand/orhisresources
spent,givingthefreshTechnocracyforcesachancetodefeattheDarkOnes.AndiftheTradition
magesucceeds,sendhimagainstmoreNephandiandrepeatthecycle.
Also,theSyndicate(believedtobecleansedofNephandinow)wagesanoccultcorporatewar,
buying,absorbing,orevenstealingenemyheldcorporationsinwhateverwaytheycan.Already,the
SyndicatehasdiscoveredmuchofPentex's"OmegaPlan"(butnotallofit),andmanagedtoreclaim
vastamountsofbusinessesandgovernments.TheSyndicatehopestosoonbeabletotacklePentex's
BoardofDirectorswithtaxfraudanddissolvetheirvariousassets(aswellasmore...shadowy
attacks).
TheNewWorldOrderiscompilinglistsofmembersoforganizationsandgovernmentsthatare
supportedbyPentexandinterrogatingthemforinformation,whileplantingundercoveragents(with
cosmeticalterationsandspecialtraining)toimpersonatetheNephandisympathizersandgainfurther
information.IterationXandtheVoidEngineersworktogethertooffsetPentex'ssubliminalmessages,
communicationsnetwork,andeventheICSitself.TheProgenitorsworkinfindingcuresforPentex
corruptions,andarecurrentlyusingcapturedPentexfomoritocreateaviralorganismthat"rewrites"
theDNAoffomoritoreturnthemtoahumanstate(sofar,allsuchexperimentshaveprovenfatalfor
thetestsubjects).
However,thisfanaticalapproachtoPentexandnottowardsotherNephandiisquitesimpletoexplain:
PentexisastainintheimageoftheTechnocracy,andwhetherornotothermagefactionsknowof
theirfailureisn'timportantbecausetheTechnocracyknows.WhiletheTechnocracyiseverybitas
vehementtowardsotherNephandi,theyseePentexasapriorityduetotheirselfblame(andthefact
thatPentexISthelargestandmostpowerfulmanifestationofNephandi/Wyrmontheplanet).
THEOTHERS
TheNephandidonotfighttheirbattlesalone.TheyhavemanyalliesamongtheAwakened.Fomori
arefound(andcreated)asexpendableassistants,BlackSpiralDancersarebroughtinfortheirpower,
SabbatandotherKindredareviewedasusefulaids,UnseeliefaeandthoseoftheShadowCourt
occasionallyassistaNephandi'splans,andevenSpectreshavetheiruses.However,thereisNOTa
happyunitybetweenthesedifferinggroups.Eachwouldjustassoonseealltheothersdestroyedas
helpthem.Andyet,fromtimetotime,theydounite.AndthenallofHellthreatenstobustforth.

ThephysicallyandspirituallywarpedandtwistedservantsoftheWyrm,theFomoriwereonce
humanswhohavesincebeenexposedtodarkforcesandbeenturnedintosuperhumanfreaks,
condemnedtoahellishexistence.Twomethodsareknowntoturnapersonintoafomori:Bane
possession,orMindandQlippothicLifemagicks.
Banepossessionisdetailedatlengthin"FreakLegion",butonefurtheradditionshouldbemade.
CertainNephandihavebeenknowntosummonBanesand(throughMindandSpiritmagicks)weaken
aperson'swillsothatthepersonbecomesaneasytargetfortheBanetopossess.SuchFomoriare
usuallytorninagreatinnerbattleasthepersonloathestheNephandiforthisviolation,whilethe
Banefeelsgreatgratitude(andgivesitshostagonyforrefusingtoobeytheNephandi).
ThesecondmethodofMind,andQlippothicLife,isverysimilartoBanepossession,andyettotally
