OS X Surface Pro Tutorial Beta Version

Written by: Jake Weidman, jakeweidman@gmail.com

***I will not be held accountable for anything you do to your Surface Pro
as a result of installing this. You shouldnt be able to brick it, but
anything is possible. This is for a SINGLE OS INSTALL ONLY. You will lose
Windows 8 entirely.
***This is a pretty crappy guide, I know. I will try at some point soon to
update it with better instructions. This is meant for someone who has had
a little bit of experience with installing OS X on unsupported hardware in
the past, and is willing to figure things out if they dont work right away. I
just wanted to get the information out there since I know there are some
people out there who would really like to do this and not wait on me.
***This guide needs the items in this file to work:
https://www.dropbox.com/s/vwgvzi7pgptd43n/OS%20X%20Surface
%20Pro.zip
It contains the necessary kexts, bootloader installers, and EFI partition
configurations that will hopefully make your life easier installing this.
Please let me know if you have any questions/comments/concerns. I am
more than happy to answer emails or anything like that. If you are really,
really happy with my work and have any interest in donating anything to
my cause, feel free to send donations to my PayPal account, which is
jakeweidman@gmail.com. Anything you have to contribute would be
greatly appreciated.
I hope this guide works for you and gets you a fully functional Surface Pro
running Mountain Lion!

Phase I Installer Preparation

What you will need

o A computer running OS X in one way or another.
o An 8GB USB Drive
o OS X Mountain Lion downloaded from the App Store
o Files found in provided file: DROPBOX LINK
Instructions, Part I Formatting USB & Putting ML on it
o

Insert your USB drive into the Mac (or Mac) and launch the OS X Disk
Utility.

Select your USB drive from the left-hand menu and select
the Partition tab.

Click the drop-down menu, selecting 1 partition.

Select Mac OS Extended (Journaled) for the format-type from the dropdown menu.

Click on the Options button below and select the radio button for GUID
Partition Table and click OK.

Upon completion of the USB formatting, locate Install Mac OS X

Mountain Lion.app(downloaded to the Applications folder by default,
unless you have moved it). Right-click the file and select Show
Package Contents.

Navigate the file structure to Contents Shared Support and drag

the InstallESD.dmg file to the desktop.

Go back to Disk Utility and click on the newly formatted USB Drive in
the menu, then click on the Restore tab.10. In the Source textbox,
click the Image button and select the InstallESD.dmg file on your
Desktop. For Destination, drag & drop the partition created on the USB
drive onto the textbox.

Upon verifying that the fields are correct, click the Restore button and
select Erase from the application, if prompted to do so.

Instructions, Part II Clover Bootloader

o

Navigate to the Pre-Install folder located inside of the file linked above.

Open the folder Clover Installer

Run the installer located in this directory. Install it to the flash drive.
You will need to click the customize button to customize your install.
You need to select the option to install for UEFI motherboards (this will
grey out a lot of other selections. For the Themes option, just select
the Apple theme.

Finish installing Clover to the flash drive.

A new folder called EFI may appear on your desktop at this time. If it
does, open it.

If it does not show up, navigate to the Post-Install folder in the

provided file, and then navigate to the Clover Installer directory.

Use the EFI Mounter app to mount the EFI partition of your flash
drive so you can edit the drive.

Now, navigate to the Clover Installer folder again in the Pre-Install

folder. Copy everything from INSIDE the Clover Copyover directory
onto the EFI partition, and overwrite anything if there are any conflicts.

Your flash drive should now be ready to boot from.

Installation
o

To boot from flash drives from the Surface Pro, you must first boot into
the bios of the Surface. To do this, first power down the device
completely. Then, while holding down the Volume Up key, turn the
Surface back on. Disable every setting in the bios.

Now, to boot from the USB, you can either power down the Surface,
and then while holding down the Volume Down key, power the surface
back on, or you can do this through Windows (you may need to do it
through Windows if you have installed Windows 8.1).

At this point, you should be in the Clover bootloader. Before you select
the option to boot into OS X, you must change on boot option.
Navigate (either using the mouse or the keyboard) to the Options
button in the sub-menu below. Once in this menu, navigate down to
the Graphics Options menu. In this menu, you need to check the box
that says InjectEDID. Now you can exit the menu, and return to the
bootloader screen. At this point, you should be able to navigate over
to the OS X Mountain Lion installer and hit enter. The bootloader
should work correctly and boot you into the OS X installer.

*****You will need to select InjectEDID every time you

reboot during this install process and regular booting
process!!!*****

Once you have booted into the OS X installer, launch the Disk Utility
and then go ahead and erase the primary harddrive, and format it with
the standard HFS+ Extended, Journaled format with a GUID partition
table.

Once formatted, you can exit the Disk Utility and proceed to install OS
X on your hard drive. The initial install will go quickly (most likely a
few minutes), and you will then reboot to the bootloader from the USB.

Do not be alarmed if it takes a few minutes for the bootloader to come

up. It sometimes took 4-5 minutes for mine to come back. You then
need to select the option to boot from OS X Install the second time
around, even though it would make more sense to boot from the drive.
If you dont get placed back into an active OS X install, just reboot and
try the other option. Let OS X finish installing.

After OS X has finished installing, you will again be taken to the

bootloader. Pick the OS X boot option on the furthest right option (as
both options will now look identical). Once again, if you get booted
back to the install USB, dont worry. Just restart and boot to the other
option.

You will now boot to the OS X account setup. Congratulations, youve

done it!

Post-Install
o

Now that you have booted to the OS X desktop, we need to set up the
Clover bootloader natively on the hard drive, as well as install a few
drivers (you will notice you have no sound or battery support OTB). At
this time to avoid confusion, remove the USB installer drive.

So, navigate to the Post-Install folder in the files I provided, and then
to the Clover Installer. Go ahead and use the Clover installer again,
except this time install it to the hard drive. If the EFI drive does not
appear after the install, just use the EFI Mounter.app to mount it.

Once the EFI drive is mounted, navigate inside the Clover Copyover
folder and again copy everything from this directory and overwrite
everything in the EFI directory that is mounted on the desktop.

At this point, try to reboot the system and see if Clover comes up
without the USB. If it does, change the InjectEDID option as weve
done before and you should then boot into OS X without a problem. If
you encounter any issues, just try to boot again from the USB and try
the process over again.

Now we need to install the remaining drivers.

Navigate to the Post-Install directory that I provided and navigate to

the Battery and Audio directory. To install the Audio kexts, just
navigate into the Audio Installer directory and run the executable. To
install the battery kexts, you can use any kext installer of your choice
(I have provided KextWizard for you). Using Kext Wizard, install the

three kexts in the Battery Kext folder. Before rebooting though, click
on the Maintenance tab at the top of the Kext Wizard, check the
/System/Library/Extensions checkbox and repair its permissions and
rebuild the cache. After it is done, you can reboot.

o At this point, you should have a fully operational Hackintosh for the
Surface Pro.
