VITROL/TE
GENERAL DESCRIPTION
VITROLITE is a Rolled Opal Glass, ranging from semi-opacity to complete opacity.
One surface is usually impressed with a pattern of narrow parallel ribs, which
provide a key fo r the mastic or other material with which the glass is fixed. The
glass has a hard, brilliant, fire-finished surface

VITRO LITE FLOORS

GEMERAL DESCRIPTION
A special kind of \' ITROLITE is made for use on floors.

Instead of the usual fire-

finished surface, \'ITROLITE Floor Tiles are finished with a dull, non-slippery
surface. They make a particularly good floor for bathrooms, elc. Slight variation
in the colour of the tiles gi\es a pleasing mosaic effect.

DIMEMSIOMS
VITROUTE Floor Tiles arc -I'\-" thick by ~square and are laid 10 a gauge of
6 tiles to the foot run or 36 to the square foot.

COLOURS
Colours Black, Green, Turquoise, Wedgwood, Pink , Ivory, White.
Pressed tiles can also be supplied in clear Cathedral Glass in the following coloursGreen, Blue, Pink, \\'hite and Light Amber.

FIXING OF VI TROLITE
MEASURING
It is not necessary to take measurements and prepare working drawings for
straightforward schemes in standard Ashlar comprising skirting and capping with
Ashlar filling pro\iding the fixer is capable of \isualising the arr:mgement of the
joints for each wall prior to commencing to fix. The approximate requirements

can be obtained from the plan which accompanies the enquiry, and it is advisable
to include a few extra Ashlars, not exceeding 5 per cent. of the total quantity, as
spares.

INTERIOR
A plumb-true and rigid suhstructun: is essential if the best results are to be
obtained- Portland Cement screed composed of one part cement to three parts
sand (without the addition of any Free Lime) provides the most suitable backing
for VITR01.1n:. It should be applied with a wood float finish as this lca\'CS a better
keying surface than a smooth trowel finish. When the screed is dry, and not
before, the area to be covered should be given a coat of Gripon Seater well brushed
in, particularly where the depressions occur.

:\"ormally one coat of Sealer is

sufficient, but a second coat may be aJ,isable if the screed is dusty, or if the first
coat dries dull and patchy. Allow about six hours for the Sealer to dry before
commencing fixing. As a general guide, half a gallon of Scaler should be sufficient
for an area of ten to twelve square yards.
Start fixing with the skirting and see that it is bedded firmly and evenly all round
the room ; if the floor is not level begin at the lowest point and work towards the
highest, cutting the rake off the bottom edge to ensure a perfectly lc,el line along
the top edge. Proceed with the upper courses of panels according to the setting

out on the working drawings.

Work the Gripon i\lastic into a roll about one inch diameter and apply in daubs
approximately 2" long at intervals of 3" to 4", so that pressure is needed to set each
panel into position with a rotating movement of the hands; this will cause the
mastic to spread and obtain a firm g rip u pon the wall and the

should be covered with mastic when it is in position on the wall. As a general
guide, one cwt, of mastic should be sufficient to fix 8 to

square yards of

The space between the joints can be 1aried to suit any kind of scheme, but it will
usually be found that pieces of cardboard about the thickness of a visiting card
are the most suitable for forming a cushion between horizontal joints; two pieces
about 1"xt should be placed at t he ends of each As hlar and set back slig htly
from the face- this pre1ents t he ed ges from coming together and shelling, it also
pro1-ides a key for the pointing as well as an even joint.

\\'here joints of greater

width are required a wood or other fillet should be inserted when fixing.
\\'hen decorative strips in the form of narrow bands are introduced horizontally,
it is advisable to support the panels immediately above on galvanised me tal
anchors, or alternatively, apply a daub of Keenes Cement at both ends of each
strip in addition to mastic. Either of these methods will prevent the strips being
pushed out by the downward thrust of the upper panels.
To guard against panels being pushed in behind the basin and Oushing cistern,
or in any other po~itions where fiuings are to be screwed, apply a few daubs of
Keenes Cement in ad(\ition 10 the usual amount of mastic. Avoid difficult no1ches,
particularly round large fittings ; joints are beuer and it is a simpk matter to
introduce them without disturbing the balance of the scheme. Square holes s hould
also be avoided.
Bed window sills almost solid and use a little Keenes Cement to keep them firm .

If a Portland Cement screed is no t available, it is safe to fix to hard and seasoned

plaster, and to Asbestos fl.at sheeting such as Poilite, which should be quite rigid
and plumb true. The studding should not be more than 14/15 inches centre to
centre.

It is extremely dangerous to fix direct to wood which reacts strongly to

temperature changes.

EXTERIOR
For outside work where conditions are more se\'ere, extra precautions are
necessary, and it is important that

VITROLITE,

which has less expansion than wood,

masonry or metal, should not be in direct contact with these or any other structural
materials.

A plumb and true Portland Cement screed as recommended for inside

work provides an ideal backing for this type of installation.

It should be allowed

to dry before being gi\en a good coat of Sealer, and if the Sealer dries dull and
patchy, a second coat should be applied.

The plinth or stall risers must be set

upon a cushion of Griponex l\ l astic and expansion tape or lead strip; only in
ex_ceptional circumstances should the bottom edge be allowed to pass below the
level of the pavement ; in this event adequate provision must be made for free
expansion of the glass where it meets the pavement by ha\ing ! " space between
the glass and pavement, which should be filled in with mastic. Apply the Griponex
Mastic in daubs at 3"-4" intervals, as for interior fixing, and run a continuous
ribbon all round each panel so that when it is in position t here is little risk of
moisture reaching the daubs through joints; butter all edges and place a strip of
expansion tape betv.een all ho rizontal joints.
Protect the mastic bed in all exposed places by fixing metal sections, lead flashings,
etc., and if t he installation exceeds 8 feet in height introduce metal anchors

It is advisable to add a few daubs of Keenes Cement to prevent the panels from

being disturbed before the mastic sets off.

A continuous metal strip or wood fillet can be fixed along the exposed polished
edges of the top, which will greatly reduce the risk of damage to these edges, and
Y<ill also act as a cover to the mastic bed in cases where

If the front docs not slope outwards from the base, the skirting should be set back
a little to a height of approximately 6" from the floor. The hottom edge of the
VITROLITE

above this recess should be supported on metal anchors or a continuous

metal angle o r strip. In cases where the panels arc to be fixed to a front sloping
OUt\\ards from the base, it is necessary fo r the top and bottom edges of these
panel'I to be secu red on the face by special metal dips or a continuous metal angle.

FLOORS

wire neuing securely spiked to the laths and anchored to the floor with galvanised
1taples. A Port land Cement screed (1 3) applied to a depth oft to j \1i1\ provide
a firm base for the floor tiles; it should be kept as even as possible, and when set,
the tiles can be fixed on a \" to j" bed of Portland Cement and Sand. Allow
2-4 hours for setting and grout neat cement into the joints ; the cement should
1lop just below the top surface of the floor tiles.

The wall panels with the top exposed edge half rounded and polished, are in ,7b white \'itrolite,
fixed to a Portland cement screed with Griponex i\lastic. The same material fixed back to back
forms laminated partitions, with a cushion of mastic between the panels, and the front edge
covered by a slotted stainless steel tube recessed into the floor and \\all. to provide rigidity.

,.ITROLITE letters can be fixed to any flat surface, and are particularly suiuble for use
on a \'ITROLITE fascia

T he surface to which they are to be fixed must be clean and dry.

T he method of

fixing is by special cement consisting of one part paste to two parts powder by weight
or volume mixed well together to ensure a thorough blending.
Brush the ribbcd back of each letter and apply the fixing cement all over; press care
fully into position and dean off surplus cement round the edges of the letters with a

putty knife .
..\llow abou t two hours for the cement to set before hoisting the fascia into position
Where letters have to be fixed to an existing fascia it is necessary to provide tempor.iry

iupport until the cement sets off-gummed paper ubs are suitable for this purpose.
