Nursery Newsletter

January 2015
Dear Parents/Carers,
The Nursery team would like to share with you the main aspects of learning for this half
term so that you can continue to support your child at home. We hope that with your
help the children will be able to achieve the objectives we have plan for them.

Mathematics
We are learning to recognise numbers up to
10 and to count a set of objects which
corresponds with a numeral. Please look
for numbers in the environment (such as
doors, car registration plates, buses) as you
walk to school. If your child knows the
numbers to 10 help them to recognise
numbers up to 20.

Personal, Social and Emotional

Development
We are revisiting class rules and talking
about why we have rules. You could
support your child by talking about rules
and appropriate behaviour at home or
when you are walking to school. We encourage the children to walk around the
classroom, use quiet voices and
share and take turns with each
other.

Communication and Language and Literacy

We are encouraging the children to become
real writers by giving them opportunities to
write in meaningful contexts. Encourage
your child to write shopping lists with you
or lists of people who are coming for
dinner. We are reading lots of fairy tales
such as Jack and the Beanstalk, Red Riding
Hood and Goldilocks and the
Three Bears.

Physical Development
We are developing our fine and gross motor
skills inside and outside. We are using a
range of every day tools such as tweezers to
develop pencil grip. We are learning to
balance and climb on a range of large
equipment and to take safe risks by jumping
onto safety surfaces.

Expressive Arts and Design

Understanding the World

We will be exploring the sounds that

musical instruments make and using them
to enliven and accompany familiar songs.
We will be supporting the children to use
their imagination to tell and act out simple
stories or retell fairy tales.

We are learning to use the computer

independently, using the mouse to operate
simple programmes. We encourage the
children to look at how the weather affects
the nursery outdoor environment. Later in
the half term we will be learning about
Chinese New Year.

Cooking
Your child will be cooking throughout the
year in various curriculum areas. If you
have not already done so, we would like to
ask you to make a voluntary
contribution of 1 towards the cost of purchasing resources. Please give
the donation to a team
member.

It would also be helpful if you ..

make time to share a book with your

child every day;

encourage your child to write for real

purposes every day;

count and find numbers in the

environment.

Watch out for fundraising events later this term. These will be held in order to raise
money for trips later this year.

We hope some of these ideas will be helpful to you. If you have any questions, queries or
concerns we are always willing to talk them through with you. If we are unable to answer
your question immediately, we are always willing to make an appointment for a more
suitable time.
Thank you for your support on behalf of the Nursery Team
