There is, as can be seen, a sharp contrast between obverse and reverse
dies. The obverses, which reveal the characteristic exponential distribution,
are obviously quite a complete representation, whereas the reverses are far
from complete.
Die-linkage between obverse dies is not uncommon. Dies B and C are linked through reverse e, as are E and F through k, I and J through bb, K and
L through gg, and 0 and P through 11. Conversely, stylistically different

reverses are sometimes linked by a shared obverse. Thus, dies b and e in one
style and c and d in another are all used with die B. Among the numerous
reverse dies used with H, p and s look relatively early". The variety with
officina-numeral A is linked to the main series by dies G and J.
The pattern of die-linkage is shown diagrammatically an Pl. 3.
Estimation of the original total size of the series
The sixteen known obverse dies obviously represent almost the whole
original output, and the version of Good's formula proposed by Lyon',
output from known dies

yields the estimate that the known dies reflect 92.5 0/o of the total, i. e. there
were only ever the equivalent of about 17 dies. (If there were any obverse
dies which were little-used, the missing one equivalent die" could however
represent several actual dies. But obverse dies did not normally break up
early in their life.) The 40 recorded reverse dies are a much smaller fraction
of the original total, namely about 42 0/0:

x , x = 96 approx.
But if one makes separate calculations for the two halves of the series, it
becomes clear (in spite of the relatively wider margins of statistical uncertainty inherent in small samples) that there is a sharp contrast in mint-practice. For the coins without officina-numeral or with A, an estimated 98
equivalent" reverse dies were used with 10 or 11 obverses. For the coins
with the numeral e, an estimated 13 or 14 equivalent" reverse dies were
used with 6 or 7 obverses. In the latter case, the ratio is possibly 2 : 1, in the
former, an astonishing 9 or 10 to 1. Even allowing for this figure to be revised downwards as a result of additions to the corpus and a recalculated
estimate, one may judge that the mint-personnel for the series without officina-numeral were very economical in their use of obverse dies.
If we take as a rough guide an average output of 10,000 per reverse die,
we are talking about an issue of around a million folles with a book value
of only about 3000 solidi'. This compares with roughly 25 million of the

There are no obvious clues in the style of the coins to show which series
of folles they belong with. But their die-ratio is more like series e.
The average weight of the half-follis is between 7 and 8g.
Pentanummia
The beautiful specimen from the Balvin collection, no. 71, is from an obverse die very close in style to the half-follis, no. 68.
3-nummia and 2-nummia
Christian pilgrimage may account for the discovery of two of the excessively scarce two-nummia excavated in the village street at Emmaus-Nicopolis, outside houses 31 and 32 ".
