Change Details
First issue, based upon SW-P-49 at issue 4.
Corrected missing separator (selection) and the incorrect positioning of
the output switcher. Also corrected the incomplete example event record
line. Appended the DVB Reference which is a new field and the missing
Event Primary Video Source Status field.
Corrected all incorrect positioning from 6.4.84 to the end.
Updated the document format to use the new template. Added the
regional event sub-types, audio guard source name, MAPP instance
label and the MAPP server material type. Also added a new section that
specifies the minimum data requirements for an event line.
Appended to the Event Record Data Fields to include Audio parameter
settings as dictated by STF-319. Also added UPID Reference to file
format
Added new Fields to comply with SW-P-64 Issue 16. All new fields added
to end of File structure to ensure backwards compatibility. The first of the
new information fields is Arc Effects.
Added extra fields for Regional Opt Outs. Format is still backwards
compatible
Allow extra descriptor for U-Fade Transition type, as this now extends
beyond 0 to 9. Sequence continues from A.
Added optional definitions for XDS and V-chip data.
Added optional definition for second PDC Billed Time (section 6.4.44).
Added optional definitions for Split Video/Audio (stf-2184)

This file format does not provide any mechanism for accounting for changes in daylight
saving time.

1.4.

Reading The Schedule File

This note is designed to aid implementers of this 'protocol'.
New fields are always appended to the end of the event line record, the existing event line
format does not change to provide compatibility with previous versions. It is therefore
recommended that all the characters up to the end of line marker are read and then the
fields required being extracted from their known positions.
Modifications to existing fields are made by the appending of new fields to the end of the
event record line, effectively making the existing fields redundant.
Conversion programs can be supplied to convert the new standard into the old standard
(refer to reference three).

FILE FORMAT

2.1.

Schedule File Name

The schedule file name may be named in any manner accepted by NT or MS-DOS, as
long as the extension on the file name is 'lst'.
xxxxxxxx.LST
Where xxxxxxxx is the schedule name.
Long Filenames may also be used in the NT environment.

2.2.

Schedule File Format

The file format is an ASCII text file. The tilde character ~ should not be included into any
textual field.
The data is stored within the file as individual lines of printable ASCII characters and can
therefore be viewed with any text editor. The line delimiter is taken as the pair '\r\n'
(carriage return and new line).
The first character of each data line determines the type of data held on that line. Only
two line formats are currently supported with a '~' indicating a data line and any other
character indicating a comment line.
Currently there are nine supported data line formats.

The Old Event Record Line Overview

The old event record line is included within this document to provide for backward
compatibility with existing implementations only. This data line provides a single
transmission event in a single long line of 639 characters (counting from one and including
the ~).
Each event line should be listed within the file in chronological order and must be used in
conjunction with the date line.

5.2.

The Old Event Record Line Format

THE NEW EVENT RECORD LINE ~!

6.1.

The New Event Record Line Overview

This data line provides a single transmission event in a single long line of 848 characters
(counting from zero and including the '~').
Each event line should be listed within the file in chronological order.

6.2.

The Event Record Format

Where the character immediately following the '~' is a ! it is taken as an event record line
entry.
Where default settings are mentioned they are as if the file has been saved from
Compass. Where no default setting is listed, the field will be space filled by default.
Certain fields within the event record refer specifically to the capabilities of the
presentation mixer or ancillary devices used with the automation system (e.g. DSK and

being loaded may duplicate numbers in the file. Hence, Event numbers can be
reassigned during the load process. The consequence of this is that these
numbers may change when a loaded file has been saved.
The prime function of Event numbers is tracking links between master and optstream Events by the means of the opt-link numbers.

Opt region

This field starts at 1012 and is two characters long. The field denotes the region
number for schedules including opt-outs using the Regional Break Opt-out
Header. This is a positive integer value between one and ninety nine with a
leading space for values less than ten. If not present or zero then this Event has
been scheduled for the master stream and is not part of a regional opt-break. If
this field contains the number one then this Event is intended for the master optstream as part of an opt-break. The opt-break for the master stream and all
subsequent Events that will be replaced within the regional variations should carry
this number set to one. The first Event bearing the number zero in this field will
denote the end of the replaceable part of the stream. As a consequence, this
number should only be set to one on opt-break headers and Events immediately
following them. Events outside this specification will be treated as if the opt region
number is set to zero. Numbers between two and nine indicate that the Event is
destined for an opt-stream (corresponding to regions one to eight in a regional
opt-out). This number should only be set to a non-zero value in schedules
destined for a system that supports opt-outs. If an opt-out schedule is loaded into
a single channel system, then any Events where this field is set to any value other
than zero or one are discarded during the load process.

Opt link - opt-out number one

This field starts at 1015 and is four characters long. The field denotes the number
of the Event in opt-stream one to which this Event is linked. This numbering is
applied only to Events in the master stream when its opt region number is set to
one (see paragraph 6.4.224). For all other streams, this value is ignored. For
single channel non-opt-out systems, these numbers are ignored. For details of
Event numbering, see paragraph 6.4.6 (page 13).

THE TRANSMISSION (ON-AIR) EVENT LINE '~+'

7.1.

Transmission Line Overview

This data line provides the transmission event in a single long line of 890 characters
(counting from one and including the '~'). The line only appears in auto-saved schedules.
The transmission event line is listed within the file in chronological order and changes as
the event is on-air.

7.2.

Transmission Line Format

When the character immediately following the '~' is a '+ it is taken to indicate the current
transmission (on-air) event. The remainder of the transmission line is the transmission
event record in the event record data line format without the initial '~!'.
NOTE: Certain fields within this transmission line will change as the event is on-air
(e.g date, time and duration). The duration will become invalid to indicate that the
transmission event has overrun.
As an example the first few entries are shown below.
~+07-JUL-97 10:30:30:00 6898 PLY1 PLY1 00:12:34:00 P .

THE OLD TRANSMISSION (ON-AIR) EVENT LINE '~*'

8.1.

The Old Transmission Line Overview

This data line has been replaced by the new transmission (on-air) event line ~+ and is
not to be used within this format.

9.

THE REGIONAL OPT-BREAK

9.1.

Master stream opt-breaks

An opt-break line is added to the schedule to indicate the start of regional
differences. If its opt-region value is set to one then this Event is a master stream
opt-break. When the schedule is run, this line will indicate the start of the optstreams providing regional variations from the master stream. Most of the fields it
is possible to put within this Event are not used and the Event itself represents no
actual material. It is analogous to an instruction to opt-out rather than an
instruction to broadcast material. The properties that are used are:

the start mode, which determines how the master stream and opt-streams will
commence

the transition, which determines the full master stream transition and the
beginning part of the opt-stream transitions, see note 2

the title, which is displayed for the user

Note 1, unlike commercial breaks, DSKs and GPIs on opt-breaks are ignored.
Note 2, as the opt-streams will break away within the master stream's transition
the only suitable transition types are:

cut

fade and take

take and fade

V-fade

Events within an opt-break on the master channel must have their opt-region
value set to 1. If the first Event after the opt-break has not got its opt-region value
set to one then the opt-break will be considered empty. If the first Event has an
opt-region value that is set to one then the duration of the break-away is
determined by the total duration of all consecutive Events with opt-region values
of one. Because the change of op-region value indicates the end of the opt there
is no explicit end of opt Event.

9.2.

opt stream opt-breaks

Opt stream opt-break Events are used as markers indicating the Events that
individual opt streams will use to fill the gap created by the master stream optbreak. Opt stream opt-break lines will have their opt-region values set to between
two and nine (indicating streams one to eight). All Events following the opt-break
with the same opt-region value will form part of the material for the regional
variation. The duration for which the break is run is taken from the master optbreak and if there is too much then only the duration of the master will be played
before the opt stream cuts back to the main. The duration stored in the opt stream
opt-break will be ignored. The start mode of the opt-break will also be ignored.
The break will always slave start from the master stream.

THE COMMERCIAL BREAK OPT-OUT LINE '~OPTX'

This opt-out format is no longer supported. This system catered for commercial opt-outs
only and has been replaced by the Event type 'R' which caters for all Event types within an
opt.

THE CONVERSION LINE '~#'

12.1. Conversion Line Overview

This conversion line provides a 'marker' that the schedule being loaded has been
converted using a schedule converter. This line should only appear in converted
schedules.
More than one conversion line could appear in the schedule and provides the time and
date of the conversion and the full MS-DOS style pathname and filename (with extension)
of the file that was converted.

12.2. Conversion Line Format

The format for the conversion line is:
~#hh:mm:ss dd-mon-yy <drive> <path> <filename>
Where # indicates the conversion line entry.
Where hh is the hour of the day in twenty-four hour format as two numerical digits, padded
with a leading zero on the RHS if required, e.g 1 am being 01 and 11 pm being 23.
Where : is a separator.
Where mm is the number of minutes passed the hour as two numerical digits, padded with
a leading zero on the RHS if required.
Where : is a separator.
Where ss is the number of seconds passed the minute as two numerical digits, padded
with a leading zero on the RHS if required
Where ' is a separator.
Where dd is the day of the month as two numerical digits, padded with a leading zero on
the RHS if required, e.g the first is 01, the eleventh is 11.
Where mon is the first three letters of the month (in English), e.g. OCT for October.
Where - is a separator.
Where yy is the year. 94 to 99 for the 20th Century. 00 to 20 for the 21st Century, e.g 95
for 1995.
Where ' is a separator.
Where <drive> is the logical MS-DOS\NT drive letter, e.g M:
Where <path> is the MS-DOS\NT path to the schedule file, e.g \schedules
Where <filename> is the MS-DOS\NT filename (including extension) of the schedule file
which was converted, e.g \eve11_10.lst
For example:

~#10:32:14 11-OCT-95 M:\schedules\eve11_10.lst\r\n

Indicates the schedule file 'eve11_10.lst' located on drive
and path 'M:\schedules' was converted at 10:32:14 on the
11th October 1995 into this file.
