The Bronx that fosters and accelerates entrepreneurship in low-income communities. Concourse is
comprised of three elements: Community Outreach, Consulting, and Funding that work sequentially to
accomplish Concourse's purpose. The Concourse sequence begins with community outreach3-Day
Startupan intensive weekend event where prospective entrepreneurs work to develop businesses. After
the event, Concourse vets and selects businesses to consult for a four-month term with growth in mind. The
goal of the four-month process is to prime enterprises for funding and, once they are deemed ready, explore
and assist in the procurement of the most favorable financing options for its clients.
MissionThe mission of The Concourse Group is to create and strengthen small businesses in New York
City by providing supporting networks, strategic guidance, and access to affordable capital.
HistoryConcourse was founded in 2012 by undergraduates at Fordham University wishing to address
the problem of financial access in New York City. In 2013, with help from Bethex Federal Credit Union,
Fordham University, and Lend for America, Concourse began by placing students at 'micro' credit unions
throughout the city and secured office space at the Fordham Foundry. In 2014, Concourse partnered with
3-Day Startup to run its first startup weekend event and began consulting local businesses.
Programs
1) Community OutreachConcourse organizes 30 to 40 prospective entrepreneurs for a weekend and
provides them space, food, access to mentors and a chance to pitch to a panel of funders at the end of the
event. The 3DS (3-Day Startup) weekend is the cornerstone for generating and preparing clients for longerterm consultation.
2) Concourse ConsultingConcourse enlists teams of university undergraduatesconsultantswho
aid local businesses of two types: high-tech and microenterprise. The consulting period lasts four months
and resources including technical assistance, strategic planning, and spaceat the Fordham Foundryare
made available to each client for the given term. The nature of each relationship is unique; however, the goal
is the same: successfully prepare clients for seed funding.
3) Seed FundingThe source and type of seed funding is dependent on the type of client and the clients
individual needs. In the case of high-tech firms, Concourse prepares clients for angel investors and venture
capitalists. Microenterprises receive assistance gaining source funding through Kiva-Zip endorsements,
crowdfunding campaigns, or microlenders.
