0 Introduction
Open Source Software
Open source software is a computer software for which the human-readable
source code is made available under a copyright license or arrangement such as the public
domain that meets the Open Source Definition.

Hardware
A computer's hardware consists of the physical components necessary to operate
and interact with a computer. Since a computer's primary language is binary, devices are
necessary to convert our input into that language. The binary code coming out of the
computer must also be translated into something usable for the operator.

Software
Software is often divided into two categories:
1. System software: Includes the operating system and all the utilities that
enables the computer to function.
2. Application software: Includes programs that do real work for users .For
example, word processors, spreadsheets, and database management systems fall
under the category of applications software.

2.0 The Latest Open Source Operating System (Os)

2.1 Meaning Of Open Source OS
An open source (OS) operating system is a set of programs that schedule tasks,
allocates storage and presents a default interface to the user between applications. But
this OS is free, user have the right to use, modify and redistribute the software for better
interoperability.

2.2 Example Of Open Source OS

A) Illume Linux 2.1

Illume os 2.1 was released on 16 august 2013 in 32-bit and 64-bit editions, along
with an upgrade package for illume os 2.0 users. Illume os (stylized with a lower-case
"i") is a linux distribution based on the stable branch of debian. It's mainly for general
purpose use. It includes a large amount of firmware, drivers, standard applications and
artwork to give an out of the box experience. It makes use of the icewm window manager
as its default window manager, giving illume os a fast and snappy experience.
At the moment, illume os is the only known active malaysian linux distribution.
Illume os is developed in penang, malaysia. Illume os is the first linux distribution
developed in penang.

B) Ubuntu 14.04
Mark Shuttleworth announced on 31 October 2011 that by Ubuntu 14.04, Ubuntu
will support smartphones, tablets, TVs and smart screens. On 18 October 2013, it was
announced that Ubuntu 14.04 would be dubbed "Trusty Tahr". This version was released
on 17 April 2014, and is the 20th release of Ubuntu. Shuttleworth indicated that the focus
in this development cycle will be a release that is characterized by "performance,
refinement, maintainability, technical debt" and encouraged the developers to make
"conservative choices". Technical debt refers to catching up and refining supporting work
for earlier changes. The development cycle for this release focused on the tablet interface,
specifically for the Nexus 7 and Nexus 10 tablets. There will be few changes to the
desktop as 14.04 will use the existing mature Unity 7 interface. Ubuntu 14.04 includes
the ability to turn off the global menu system and use Locally Integrated Menus instead
for individual applications. Other features are the retention of Xorg and not Mir or XMir,
a Unity 8 developers' preview, new mobile applications, a redesigned USB Start-Up Disk
Creator tool, a new forked version of the GNOME Control Center, called the Unity
Control Center and default SSD TRIM support. GNOME 3.10 is installed by default.
Ubuntu 14.04 was the first version to support ARM64 (ARMv8-A) in addition to
ARMv7. It also started official Power support.

3.0 The Latest Open Source Application Software

3.1 Meaning Of Open Source Application Software
Application software is a defined subclass of computer software that employs the
capabilities of a computer directly to a task that the user wishes to perform. This should
be contrasted with system software which is involved in integrating a computer's various
capabilities, but typically does not directly apply them in the performance of tasks that
benefit the user. The term application refers to both the application software and its
implementation.

3.2 Example of Open Source Application Software

A) Mozilla Thunderbird
Mozilla Thunderbird is a free, open source, cross-platform email, news, and chat
client developed by the Mozilla Foundation. The project strategy was modeled after
Mozilla Firefox, a project aimed at creating a web browser. On December 7, 2004,
version 1.0 was released, and received more than 500,000 downloads in its first three
days of release, and 1,000,000 in 10 days.On July 6, 2012, Mozilla announced the
company was dropping the priority of Thunderbird development because the continuous
effort to extend Thunderbird's feature set was mostly fruitless.

B) Open Office
Open Office (see http://www.openoffice.org/): an office application set (for word
processing, spreadsheet manipulation, picture drawing and data base access) compatible
with all other major office application sets such as Office and available for Windows and
Mac as well as Linux and other UNIX systems.

5.0 Pervasive Computing

5.1 Meaning Of Pervasive Computing
Pervasive computing is the trend towards increasingly ubiquitous (another name
for the movement is ubiquitous computing), connected computing devices in the
7

environment, a trend being brought about by a convergence of advanced electronic - and

particularly, wireless - technologies and the Internet. Pervasive computing devices are not
personal computers as we tend to think of them, but very tiny - even invisible - devices,
either mobile or embedded in almost any type of object imaginable, including cars, tools,
appliances, clothing and various consumer goods - all communicating through
increasingly interconnected networks.

A) Smartwatch
A smartwatch (or smart watch) is a computerized wristwatch with functionality
that is enhanced beyond timekeeping, and is often comparable to a personal digital
assistant (PDA) device. While early models can perform basic tasks, such as calculations,
translations, and game-playing, modern smartwatches are effectively wearable
computers. Many smartwatches run mobile apps, while a smaller number of models run a
mobile operating system and function as portable media players, offering playback of FM
radio, audio, and video files to the user via a Bluetooth headset. Some smartwatches
models, also called watch phones, feature full mobile phone capability, and can make or
answer phone calls.Like other computers, a smartwatch may collect information from
internal or external sensors. It may control, or retrieve data from, other instruments or
computers. It may support wireless technologies like Bluetooth, Wi-Fi, and GPS.
However, it is possible a "wristwatch computer" may just serve as a front end for a
remote system, as in the case of watches utilizing cellular technology or Wi-Fi.

B) Gulcom Wristband
With the widespread of diabetics among almost all range of people around,
medical equipment manufacturers are introducing various products everyday. The
Gluco(M) Wristband is a concept medical device that offers three major functions to
diabetics: non-invasive and instant glucose reading, storing previous readings history
with averages, and an extremely useful insulin chamber with loaded syringe cartridge.
This innovative product is featured with Reverse Iontophoresis technology and collects
glucose samples from body fluids by using an electric current flowing throughout the
sensors. The readings are shown on the back-lit LED display and different required
buttons for operating this device are placed at the edge of this device.

6.0 Conclusion
Open source highlights that the source code is viewable to all and proponents of
the term usually emphasize the quality of the software and how this is caused by the
development models which are possible and popular among free and open source
software projects. Pervasive Computing is to make our lives easier because we can
interact with computers. Besides that, we can easily give the computer commands and the
computer will grant your wish.
