DESIGN PHILOSOPHY

VALUE

CREATIVITY

As architects we desire to create lasting statements of design

creativity, flair and significance. At the heart of our response
to a brief is a sound commercial solution, which through its
design, adds value and establishes viability. We believe our
input to the commercial success of any project starts at the
masterplanning stage where the project vision is established
and strategic decisions are made. These components, if
correctly assimilated into a design brief, provide the framework
for the overlay of the architectural design. Which establishes a
successful built and spatial environment within the development.

Good design is paramount to everything that we do and we

believe that truly creative designs go far beyond the look
and feel. They are based on a complex set of criteria. The
environments we create reflect the past, present and future
times and take into account peoples imaginations, priorities,
needs, cultures and tastes. They feel contemporary and yet
are responsive to their contexts. The environments that we
create today will enrich and enliven the people who use them
tomorrow. Well designed spaces inspire, relax and invigorate
without being overtly fashionable. Our aim is to create timeless
architecture where detail is essential materials, textures,
colours, style and construction. Encapsulating all of these
elements into an economically and environmentally sustainable
design is what makes our designs creatively intelligent.

VISION

INNOVATION

One of our strengths lies in the ability to work with our

clients to develop a design strategy. We articulate, develop
and deliver our core design principles which underpins our
ongoing success. We take time to understand what adds value
to communities, how people interact with their environments,
what peoples needs are, and what their aspirations are for the
future. We observe patterns and trends to help predict how
our clients and users needs are likely to evolve. This enables
us to interpret a projects requirements more precisely and
to provide solutions that are responsive to social, economic,
individual, political and technological drivers. It is our belief
that architecture should emphasise the intelligent use of
space where imaginative, well-designed buildings allied to
considered masterplanning strategies will make developments
whether urban or rural, attractive hubs of social interaction.
Our aim is for people to sense that their built surroundings
reflect their aspirations and stimulate the right emotions.

Our true innovation is the ability to deliver successful

solutions across various sectors and cultures. Our designs
are a balance of creativity, design and commercial astuteness.
Intelligent designs have to succeed on many levels, provide
a commercially sound product through viability, vitality,
affordability and deliverability. For we have delivered
commercially successful projects. This is because we believe
that commercial doesnt mean irresponsible or uninspired.
In fact, quite the contrary, it requires extra sensitivity,
thoughtfulness, innovation and creativity. We have a thorough
understanding of how commercial architecture can add value to
communities economically, aesthetically, socially, culturally and
environmentally. We believe that buildings should be like their
users, individual with unique personalities, needs and objectives.

WORKING INTERNATIONALLY
The last twenty years has seen a significant increase in the growth of
our international work, based principally on our established reputation
as masterplanners, architects and interior designers of many different
types of commercial projects. Fundamental to our design process is

DELIVERING SUSTAINABILITY
Making buildings both environmentally sustainable and economically
viable has always been a challenge for designers. However, client
and public perception of the value of effective sustainable design has
changed dramatically. Technological innovations and wider understanding
of efficient systems have meant that this challenge has become
considerably easier.

The requirement for Energy Performance Certificates in

buildings and mandatory Carbon Emission Calculations means
that the value of property portfolios can now be affected by
their environmental credentials. It therefore makes commercial
sense for projects to take full advantage of the marketing
opportunities and potential financial advantages brought by
maximising a buildings environmental performance.
A fundamental approach at Chapman Taylor has always been
about creating the right urban framework and mix of uses
that are the foundation of truly environmentally and socially
sustainable environments. As creative and sustainabilityconscious designers, we have an underlying objective to
maximise the potential of any scheme, while striving to minimise
its environmental impact.
We have established a strong and successful working
relationship with some of the best international environmental
consultants, leading to achievement of BREEAM, LEED and
other energy performance codes on many of our projects.
In the UK, a sustainable approach was implemented from
the outset on the multi-award-winning integrated urban
regeneration scheme at Cabot Circus, Bristol. The project
was the first retail-led development in the UK to achieve the
highest BREEAM rating of Excellent. Low-energy features
include LED lighting to the streets and natural ventilation of
the unconditioned streetscape, which is estimated to save
five million kWh of energy per year-equivalent to the energy
consumed by 450 homes.

Peels MediaCityUK which comprises media related work

places and studios as well as 371 apartments, a 216 bed hotel
and other additional uses, became the first development in the
world to become a BREEAM Sustainable Community. Leading
technological solutions were incorporated into the design of
this 500m development, including making use of one of its
greatest assetswater from the Manchester Ship Canal to cool
a tri-generation combined heating, power and cooling plant that
supplies all the buildings on the 36 acre site.
The 106,000m inner city regeneration project at Forum
Duisburg, Germany, was the first retail project in mainland
Europe to be awarded a BREAAM Very Good rating for its
impressive sustainable features. The building materials used
are prevalent throughout the local region. A block heating unit
allows power, heat and refrigeration to be generated on the
spot, reducing average total energy consumption by at least 25
percent compared to that of similar building types. Furthermore,
a 10,000m lawn roof above the department store was installed
to improve the microclimate of the surrounding area. The
development was honoured with the Sustainable Resource
Award and the Best New Development of the Year: Large, in the
ICSC 2010 Awards.
We have in-house BREEAM assessors and a dedicated
Sustainability Group tasked with promoting awareness and
disseminating knowledge of effective and relevant sustainable
design internally and to our clients. Chapman Taylor is a member
of the Green Building Council in the UK, Poland, Romania and
Czech Republic.

homogeneous arrangement of 700,000m
of retail, leisure, office, convention and
hotel facilities arranged in a dynamic
plan-form.

The concept is derived from the

expression of a spiral galaxy, with street
curving out from a fantastic central space.
The lower highly contemporary massing of
the retail, leisure and convention spaces
will contrast with the four elegant office
and hotel towers, which will create a
dramatic and expressive skyline to this
south entry to Moscow.

CENTENNIAL HALL
Wroclaw Poland

2008 - 2011
Start & End

Centennial Hall is a historic building

that was constructed according to the
plans of Max Berg in 1911-1913. The
final designs envisioned a quatrefoil plan
featuring a huge 65m diameter central
dome and the use of reinforced concrete,
a new construction material at the time.
From the early 20th century it has been a
symbol of the city with the building being
listed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site
in 2006. Chapman Taylor successfully
completed a redesign of the interior under
a strict conservation policy, converting
this iconic complex into a unique tourist
attraction of international significance, and
giving it a second life.

Works included rearranging the interiors,

modifying the functional aspects of the
building and maximising the seating
numbers to achieve 10,000 from the
previous 6,500.To build on Centennial
Halls stature as one of the most
outstanding achievements of 20th century
architecture, new programmes include the
creation of an interactive visitor education
centre, as well as a series of cultural,

Conceived as a marina village, the

Serenity Marina is situated on the
southern peninsula of the city of Sanya,
known to be the best holiday resort
in China with a climate akin to the
Mediterranean.
The development, part of Serenity Island,
covers an area of 70,000m2 with 1,120m
of breakwaters and comprises a mix of
residential, office, retail and hospitality
outlets, together with the marina
requirements of a club house, sailing
school and 350 fully serviced yacht
moorings, including superyacht berths.

development. To ensure that the marina

was designed to the highest standards
work was carried out alongside Camper
& Nicholsons Marinas, one of the worlds
oldest and most prestigious yachting
names, who provided expert advice and
consulting skills enabling the finished
development to reflect the needs of a
world leading marina.
Opened in early 2012, the marina was
the only Asian stopover host-port in the
2012 Volvo Ocean Racing Series.
