4.3 Prerequisites
1.

The IP address of the local PC that is used to connect the CPE is set as a static IP address.
Ensure that the IP address is a legal IP address (192.168.1.***). For example,
192.168.1.10. *** can be any value within 2254.

2.

The network is connected and the hubs work normally.

(server of multicast tool and CPE are same local area network)

3.

The transmit package tool on the server runs normally.

4.4 Procedure
During the upgrade, observe the change of the signal strength indicators. This helps to
identify the faults occurring during the upgrade.
To perform the multicast upgrade, do as follows:
1.

Set up the network environment according to the networking diagram in Figure 4-1.

2.

Connect the CPE to the local area network (LAN). (It is suggested that the CPEs that are
to be upgraded in multicast mode are connected to the same power supply. Thus, all the
CPEs can be upgraded at the same time.)

3.

Start the hubs, and then run the multicast transmit tool to send the multicast upgrade
packets to the network. (use of multicast tool)

4.

Power on the CPEs. The CPEs perform the multicast upgrade automatically.

Note: If the CPE cannot connect to a PC through a hub, you can use the direct connection
mode. Do as follows:
5.

Connect the CPE to the PC directly.

6.

Start the CPE. The network card that connects the PC and the CPE indicates that the
connection is set up.

7.

Run the multicast package transmit tool to send the multicast upgrade packets to the
CPE.

8.

When the packets begin to be sent, power off the CPE and restart it to begin the multicast
upgrade.

Note: The CPE powered off and then should restart immediately after the multicast package
transmit tool starts to run. If the signal strength indicators blink cyclically in turn, it indicates
that the CPE is writing data into the flash memory. Do not power off the CPE when it begins
to upgrade; otherwise, the device may get damaged and cannot be repaired by upgrading the
software.

4.5 Status
The descriptions of the WiMAX signal strength indicators are as follows:
1.

2012-05-04

The signal strength indicators indicate signal strength from the weakest to the strongest,
marked with numbers from 1 to 5. See Figure 4-2.

3.

The signal strength indicators blink cyclically in the following sequence: (1) -> (2) -> (3)
-> (4) -> (5) -> (1).

4.

If the indicators blink in the sequence as described in 2, it indicates that the CPE is
receiving files.

5.

If the indicators blink in the sequence as described in 2, it indicates that the CPE is
writing files.

Note: After the upgrade, if you want to start the CPEs, you need to stop running the multicast
package transmit tool first, and then restart the CPEs. Or you can disconnect the CPEs from
the multicast upgrade network, and then restart the CPEs. Otherwise, if you restart the CPEs
in the network, the multicast upgrade is triggered again.

4.6 Checking the Results

After the multicast upgrade, the system will not restart. You need to check the upgrade results
by checking the status of the signal strength indicators. Alternatively, after the CPE restarts
normally, you can check the software version and the package date from the Device Info page
to determine whether the multicast upgrade is successful.
1.

Check the status of the WiMAX signal strength indicators.

If the multicast upgrade is successful, the indicators 1, 4, and 5 will be on. See Figure 4-3.

Changing the Version Priority

On the Web UI of the CPE, choose Maintain > Device > Firmware and then click Upgrade
Software by CWMP to initiate the upgrade by using the APM V100R002C01B060. The
APM compares the software version of the CPE with the versions in the version list that are
corresponding to the product. Then the APM delivers the version listed at the bottom of the
version list. Take the page as shown in Figure 6-11 as an example. When the BM626 initiates
an upgrade request, the APM delivers the version of B016C01B011 (listed at the bottom).

6.5 Status
During the CWMP upgrade, the status of the signal strength indicators is as follows:
1.

The signal strength indicators blink cyclically, which indicates that the CPE is writing
files.

2.

The system restarts automatically after the upgrade.

Note:
After the CPE restarts, if the signal strength indicators are all on, off, or blink cyclically, it indicates that
files are corrupted during the upgrade. In this circumstance, you can recover the CPE through the
multicast upgrade or local upgrade (if the CPE can access the Web page normally).

6.6 Checking the Results

After the CPE restarts normally, choose Status > Device > Device Info to query the software
version and the package date. If the software version and the package date on the CPE is the
same as that of the upgrade package, it indicates that the upgrade succeeds; otherwise, it
indicates that the upgrade fails. See Figure 6-19.

Appendix

7.1 Precautions
1.

Do not power off any application server, hub or CPE, or perform any operation on them
during the upgrade. Otherwise, the upgrade may fail or the device may get damaged.

2.

Check whether the network connection is normal. If the indicator on the network port is
on, it indicates that the network is connected.

3.

During the upgrade, observe the change of the signal strength indicators. This helps to
identify the faults occurring during the upgrade.

7.2 Troubeshooting

The indicators do not blink during the multicast upgrade.

First, check and ensure that the hardware is free of the following faults: The CPE is not
powered on and the indicators are damaged.
If no hardware fault is detected, the software may be faulty. The following may be the causes:
1.

The system is not restarted and the upgrade is not triggered.

Solution: Power off the CPE and restart it to perform the multicast upgrade again.
2.

The network connection is abnormal.

Solution: Check whether the hub between the multicast application server and the CPE works
normally by observing the indicator on the hub. If the indicator is on or is blinking, it
indicates that the network connection is normal or data is being transmitted. If the indicator is
off, the network connection is abnormal or no data is being transmitted, and you must change
the network port or the network cable before performing the check again.
3.

The multicast package transmit tool works abnormally.

Solution: Ensure that the multicast application server and the multicast package transmit tool
work normally. Ensure that the IP address of the network card that is used to connect the
multicast application server and the hub is set correctly for the multicast transmit tool.
4.

Solution: Use the correct upgrade package file for the multicast upgrade.
Ensure that the hardware version of the upgrade package is consistent with the hardware
version of the CPE.

The system prompts that the upgrade and file downloading are unsuccessful during the
remote manual upgrade.

First, check and ensure that the hardware is free of the following faults: The CPE is not
powered on and the indicator is damaged.
If no hardware error is detected, the software may be faulty. Check the followings:
5.

Network status: whether the local PC can access the remote server.

6.

Whether the following is set correctly in the Web-based interface: the IP address of the
upgrade server, the filename of the upgrade policy file, and the user name and password
used to access the upgrade server.

If the upgrade is still unsuccessful, do as follows:

Try to upgrade the CPE again through multicast upgrade or local upgrade. If the upgrade is
still unsuccessful, check whether the hardware works normally.
