Unit 2 Test 1.0: Matter & Energy

Section 1 - 2.1 Collisions and Motion: Students will be able to
apply motion and collision ideas to states of matter, thermal
energy, temperature and phenomena.
1) Explain why the smell from cooked food will take longer to spread out in a cold
(-10OC) environment then a hot (35OC) environment, using particle diagrams and less
than three sentences.

2) Show the changes that take place when a thermometer at room temperature is put in
cold (-10OC) water. Draw before and after particle diagrams.

3) A steaming plate of chicken rice is left to sit on a table for one hour. Draw the before
and after particle diagrams.

4) Looking at the provided graphic on the right, why do straight bi-metallic plates curve
when heated? Using your understanding of thermal energy, explain this phenomenon
with particle diagrams and word explanations.

Section 2 - 2.2 Gas Laws (Combined): Students will be able to
make qualitative and quantitative predictions about the effects of
changing pressure, volume, temperature and particles in gases.
5) If all other variables of a sample of gas are kept constant: as puffs decrease,
pressure:
a. increases
b. decreases
c. remains constant
6) Explain the above answer using particle diagrams and one or two sentences.

7) A sealed container at 3.2L is heated from -20.0OC to 36.3OC. Find the new volume.

In an effort to improve the atmosphere for passengers on an airplane, a
group of engineers decide to increase the cabin temperature.
8) As a result the pressure changes, to keep the pressure constant what must be done to
the puffs?
a. increase
b. decrease
c. remain constant
9) Explain the above answer using particle diagrams and less than three sentences.

10) The group of engineers decides that a change of 6.0kPa from 98.2kPa is acceptable.
Calculate the change in total puffs from 1980.0 puffs, if the group were to increase
the temperature from 22.0OC to 25.0OC.
