You deploy an additional vSphere Replication server by deploying the vSphere Replication server
appliance. The vSphere Replication appliance already contains one vSphere Replication server.
However, you can deploy additional vSphere Replication servers to load-balance replication tasks.
From your vSphere Client session, you deploy your vSphere Replication server at the recovery site,
which is your partners site.
Students should perform the steps in this task individually.
Use the following information from the class configuration handout:
vSphere Replication server appliance FQDN
vSphere Replication server appliance datastore
vSphere Replication server appliance password
vSphere Replication server appliance IP address
vSphere Replication server appliance netmask
vSphere Replication server appliance gateway address
vSphere Replication server appliance DNS names
1. In the left pane, select your recovery site, which is your partners site name.

Do not select the site labeled (Local).

2. In the Commands panel on the Summary tab, click Deploy VR Server.
3. When the Deploy VR Server informational message is displayed, click OK.

The Deploy OVF Template wizard starts.

(Optional) Using the dr-ip-customizer

Program
Objective: Use dr-ip-customizer to modify network
settings
In this lab, you will perform the following tasks:
1. Generate a .csv File and Add Network Settings
2. Apply the .csv File
NOTE

This optional lab is time-consuming. Perform this lab only if you have extra time.

Task 1: Generate a .csv File and Add Network Settings

Students should do the steps in this task individually.

Use the following information from the class configuration handout:
Your vCenter Server system FQDN
vCenter Server system user name
vCenter Server system password

Lab 8 (Optional) Using the dr-ip-customizer Program

55

You use the dr-ip-customizer program to generate a .csv file. You modify the .csv file and
add the protected site and recovery site IP addresses of your application server, database server, and
Web server.

1. If you have not done so already, use the VMware vSphere Client to log in to your

VMware vCenter Server system.

Use the information that is specified in the class configuration handout.
2. Determine the IP addresses of your application server, database server, and Web server virtual

machines.
a. Select Home > Inventory > VMs and Templates.
b. Expand the SRM Protected Services folder.
c. One at a time, view the Summary tab of your application server, database server, and Web

server.
Record the IP addresses of these servers in the table, under the column named IP
Address at Protected Site.
Under the column named IP Address at Recovery Site, fill each blank with the fourth
octet of the IP address at the protected site. For example, if the database servers IP
address is 172.17.63.105, then the IP address at the recovery site is 10.10.10.105.

__________

3. From your vCenter Server system desktop, open a Windows command prompt window.
4. Change to the SRM bin directory.

cd C:\Program Files\VMware\VMware vCenter Site Recovery Manager\bin

5. To generate a .csv (comma-separated values) file, enter the command on a single line.

dr-ip-customizer --vc vCenter_Server_FQDN

--cfg ..\config\vmware-dr.xml --cmd generate --out C:\srm.csv

vCenter_Server_FQDN is your vCenter Server system fully qualified domain name (FQDN)
that is specified in the class configuration handout.
a. When the program asks if you trust this server, enter y.
b. When prompted to enter the user name and password, enter your vCenter Server user name

and password that is specified in the class configuration handout.

56

Lab 8 (Optional) Using the dr-ip-customizer Program

c. When the program asks once more if you trust this server, enter y.
6. Add the IP address information to the srm.csv file.
a. Using the Windows Notepad program, open srm.csv.
srm.csv looks like the screenshot.

This file contains comma-separated values on each line. The first line in the file identifies
the field names. For example, the first value in the second row is the virtual machine ID.
Similarly, the second value is the virtual machine name and the third value is the vCenter
Server name, the fourth value is the adapter ID, and so on.
b. Locate the two lines in this file that refer to your database server. For example, if your

database server is named dbsvr-apple01, then the lines look as shown in the screenshot.

c. Looking at the third field (vCenter Server), identify which vCenter Server system is at the

protected site and which one is at the recovery site:

vCenter Server at protected site __________
vCenter Server at recovery site __________
d. Copy the two lines and in the fourth field, change the 0 to 1.

Lab 8 (Optional) Using the dr-ip-customizer Program

57

See the screenhot for an example.

e. Modify these two lines so that the ninth field (IP Address) and tenth field (Subnet Mask)

are filled in.

The screenshot shows an example of what the lines should look like.

In the first modified row, the ninth field (IP address) is changed to 172.17.63.105. This IP
address is the IP address at the protected site for the database server virtual machine. You
recorded the protected site IP address in the table in step 2c. In the tenth field, the subnet
mask is 255.255.255.0.

In the second modified row, the ninth field (IP address) is changed to 10.10.10.105. This IP
address is the IP address at the recovery site for the database server virtual machine. You
recorded the recovery site IP address in the table in step 2c. In the tenth field, the subnet
mask is 255.255.255.0.
f. Similarly, modify lines for your application server and Web server.

The screenshot shows an example of what the file should look like after all modifications
are made.

58

Lab 8 (Optional) Using the dr-ip-customizer Program

g. Save all your changes and exit Notepad.

Task 2: Apply the .csv File

You apply the .csv file, which configures the IP information for the application server, database
server, and Web server.
Students should do the steps in this task individually.
Use the following information from the class configuration handout:
Your vCenter Server system FQDN
vCenter Server system user name
vCenter Server system password
1. Return to the Windows command prompt window.
2. To upload the modified srm.csv file, enter the command on a single line.

You can also press the Up Arrow key to display the last command executed. Use the Backspace,
left arrow, and right arrow keys to modify the command line.
dr-ip-customizer --vc vCenter_Server_FQDN
--cfg ..\config\vmware-dr.xml --cmd apply --csv C:\srm.csv

vCenter_Server_FQDN is your vCenter Server system FQDN that is specified in the class
configuration handout.
a. When the program asks if you trust this server, enter y.

Lab 8 (Optional) Using the dr-ip-customizer Program

59

NOTE

b. When prompted to enter the user name and password, enter your vCenter Server user name

and password that is specified in the class configuration handout.

c. When the program asks once more if you trust this server, enter y.
3. Verify that the IP address information has been configured.
a. Return to the vSphere Client window.
b. Select Home > Solutions and Applications > Site Recovery.
c. Select Recovery Plans in the lower-left pane.
d. Select your recovery plan in the Recovery Plans panel.
e. Click the Virtual Machines tab.

The VM Recovery Properties dialog box is displayed.

g. Verify that the IP Settings panel correctly displays the IP addresses and subnet masks for

the protected site and the recovery site and click Cancel.
h. Verify the IP settings for the application server and the Web server.
NOTE

If the IP settings are incorrect, edit srm.csv to contain the correct values and perform step
6 from the previous task again to reapply the srm.csv file.
4. Close the Windows command prompt window.

Leave the vSphere Client open for the next lab.
