2 CHAPTER I- Reiki Introduction – PRACTICAL REIKI: COSMIC HEALING: T. Manohar Rao

FOREWORD
In this modern age people have an erratic way of life and live under tension. By the use of instant
relief methods such as allopathic medicines, their bodies are subjected to more havoc than relief due
to its side effects, which are usually felt some time later. Hence more and more people are rejecting
the mechanised medicines for ancient inner ways of healing, or alternate modes of treatment i.e.
Herbs, Homeopathy, Massage, Acupuncture, Flower essence, and Psychic healing. These often
succeed when modern medical systems fail. Reiki, the Universal Energy system is one such method,
which is now universally accepted as a mode of treatment. This is a method available at short notice
and can form a part or whole of any other method of healing sickness and diseases.
This small book endeavours to highlight certain important aspects of Reiki, its method of treatment,
and its use in various situations. This book incorporates the basis of Reiki, definition, chakras
(kundalini), and procedures of offering Reiki, i.e. meditation, shielding, and harmonising the healer
with the patient. It gives an idea to the reader about the method of cosmic healing and removes the
notion that this is a type of hypnotic curing.
It is an elementary approach to the Reiki method of healing, and interested readers and practitioners
can learn more about the various aspects by going through the recommended readings given at the
end of this book. Of course it is assumed that healers have been properly attuned to Reiki, and know
the basics of treatment. Reiki will flow only to those initiated into it. But it is hoped that the
uninitiated who read the book may be interested in becoming Reiki healers.
The physical, psychological and mental symptoms of the subject are manifestations of one and the
same problem or principle, differing only according to the level. Hence it is always important to take
the sum total of the native’s symptoms into consideration while treatment is being given. Health
problems are not due to a singular cause but a consolidated effect of various causes and symptoms.
Hence it is very essential to evolve a holistic treatment combining the various organs and systems.
For example a simple headache may be caused by many considerations, i.e. climate, stomach upset,
eyesight, tension, etc. Hence treatment of one part may not result in healing. So a combined
treatment on these reflex parts will be a sure way of combating the headache.
These problems have also a meaning from the metaphysical point of view - which are not connected
to any physical cause. Explaining these meanings will help the native to overcome the psychological
and attitudinal problems to a greater extent, by resorting to remedial measures that are in his own
hands. In this way, Reiki is a holistic method of healing, and heals the cause as well as the effect.
A novel feature of this book is the description and details of different diseases, the type of Reiki
treatment required, as well as the psychological and metaphysical problems behind the disease. Since
most of the Reiki practitioners may not be doctors, or have any medical or physiological knowledge,
this book presents the various ailments and diseases and the parts and systems of the body that are
affected. Efforts have been made to present the diseases/problems in simple language, with medical
description when required. Symptoms, causes, general treatment and diet for each of the diseases
are also given, along with Reiki treatment. Information has been collected from doctors, medical and
Reiki books and literature, along with material from lessons taught in Reiki seminars.
After explaining the symptoms, causes and the organs/systems involved in each problem, the method
of cosmic healing (Reiki treatment) has been given, with instructions on the hand positions to be
adopted, and the chakras to be treated and balanced. To assist the Reiki practitioners, general notes
on the preparation and care to be taken for Reiki treatment and the general effects the native can
enjoy with this divine treatment are also discussed. A short note on the meanings of the various
metaphysical problems has been given against each problem. The various organs involved in these
cases have also been listed to help the healer and the native to understand the problems fully.
3 CHAPTER I- Reiki Introduction – PRACTICAL REIKI: COSMIC HEALING: T. Manohar Rao

Further an Appendix showing the various parts, important organs and systems of the body are also
shown. This will help the healers (who may not have a medical background) to understand and locate
the various organs and the reflex areas mentioned in Section 2 on Reiki treatment.
I hope the readers and Reiki practitioners may find this book informative, useful as a handbook, and
helpful in their vocation. May Divine Cosmic Energy be with you, bring you health, wealth and
happiness, and make you a Reiki channel.
Suggestions and hints to improve the rendering in this book to widen its scope and application will be
gratefully accepted.

4 CHAPTER I- Reiki Introduction – PRACTICAL REIKI: COSMIC HEALING: T. Manohar Rao

A HEALER’S PRAYER
Lord, who on earth did minister,

To those who helpless lay,

In pain and weakness, hear me now,

As unto Thee I pray.

Give to mine eyes the power to see,

The hidden source of ill,

Give to my hands the healing touch,

The throb of pain to still.

Grant that mine ears be swift to hear,

The cry of those in pain.

Give to my tongue the words that bring

Comfort and strength again.

Fill Thee my heart with tenderness,

My brain with wisdom true.

And when in weariness I sink,

Strengthen me then anew.

So in Thy footsteps may I tread,

Strong in Thy strength always,

So may I do Thy Blessed work,

And praise Thee day by day.

PART I
CHAPTER 1 - PRINCIPLES OF REIKI

R eiki is a Japanese word for Universal life energy. The Indian name is Prana. In American books
on Reiki, they use the Sanskrit term – Adi parasakthi, an eternal force. Reiki helps one to
overcome many daily problems like stress, depression, backache etc., with much ease, fast and
without medication. It also helps to harmonise one’s inner self to the actions of the external
world. It enables the subject to enhance his own energy, to improve his relationship with others. He
can treat himself and others who are even far away using distant healing, which is as effective as
treatment close-up. Reiki can contribute to every method of healing and gratitude.

The Reiki teachings are open for anyone to learn, regardless of religious beliefs; actually no belief is
needed. These principles are worth a thought and they can certainly be a guide in one’s life, and are
given below:

Reiki Principles: The Secret of inviting Happiness,

The Spiritual Medicine for all illnesses:
Just for today,
♦ Do not get angry

♦ Do not worry

♦ Express your thanks

♦ Be diligent in your work, and

♦ Be kind to others
Repeat these in your mind at the beginning and the end of each day.
Usui Reiki Ryho - Improve your mind and body.
~ Mikao Usui

What do these principles mean? Here is one possible interpretation:

o The secret of inviting happiness: the receiving of many "Reiju" or empowerments.

o The spiritual medicine for all illness: for mental, physical and spiritual health.

o For today only: Value today! The present is now, life is not in the future or in the past, there is
only now!

o Do not anger: Realise that anger and other selfish emotions like resentment, hatred, and envy
are harmful; avoid such emotions.

o Do not worry: Do your best, believe and trust in the universe.

o Express your thanks: In this world it is easy to lose ourselves when we forget gratitude for
being alive.

o Be diligent in your work, it is not important what we do, it is important what we learn from
what we do.
8 CHAPTER I- Reiki Introduction – PRACTICAL REIKI: COSMIC HEALING: T. Manohar Rao

o Be kind to others: also means take good care of yourself, there is no difference between self
and others in a universal dimension.

Repeat them in the mind at the beginning and the end of each day. This practice starts at the
beginning and end of each day, by reciting these principles.

CHAPTER 2 - THE ORIGINS OF REIKI

T HE F OUNDER - U SUI S ENSEI (1865 – 1926)

M th
ikao Usui was the originator of Reiki. He was born on August 15 1865, in the village of
‘Taniai-mura’ in the Yamagata district of Gifu prefecture Kyoto, Japan. Mikao Usui
probably came from a good family, as at that time only children from wealthy families
could get a good education. As a child he studied in a Tendai Buddhist monastery
school, entering it at an early age. He was also a student of different
martial arts.
His memorial states that he was a talented hard working student; he liked
to read and his knowledge of medicine, psychology, fortune telling and
theology of religions around the world, including the Kyoten (Buddhist
Bible) was vast.
Usui Sensei studied and travelled to Western countries and China several
times, as this was encouraged during the Meiji Era and later on he learnt
and studied Western ways.
During his lifetime, Miako Usui followed many different professions. At some point in his life he
became a Tendai Buddhist Monk/Priest (what in the West is called a lay priest). On several occasions
he performed a form of meditation that lasted 21 days.
On his memorial it says that at one time, he performed such a mediation on Mount Kurama (Horse
Saddle Mountain), and this is when he was supposed to have been given the inspiration for a system
of healing – which he called ‘Reiki’. It has been stated that this science originated in India and Tibet,
but had almost vanished there. The Divine inspiration to Mikao Usui again revived the system, and he
found that the healing techniques contained within his spiritual system worked well on various
ailments.
Mikao Usui's skills as a healer and teacher must have been very good and his fame spread very quickly
throughout Japan. The Usui teachings included teaching people how to heal themselves (a very
central point still in Reiki of today). His Reiki students seem to have worked with the teacher for
some sort of payment (a small monetary fee). His teachings became popular among the older people
who saw them as a return to old ideals and spiritual practices.
st
On 1 of September 1923, an earthquake shook Tokyo and Yokohama, measuring 7.9 on the Richter
scale. The epicentre was 50 miles from Tokyo. Over 140,000 deaths were reported. The majority
were killed in the fires started by the earthquake. It was the greatest natural disaster in Japanese
history. Mikao Usui and his students started to give healing in the area, and the demand and need for
Reiki was enormous. As a result of his work he became even more famous. Mikao Usui passed away
on March 9th 1926, at the age of 62.
Among the students of Mikao Usui, Dr. Hayashi is important, as he was the one who brought Reiki out
of Japan and made it known to the West, from where it travelled to other parts of the world. Also, Dr
Hayashi played two important parts in Western Reiki. One, he is probably the originator of the hand
9 CHAPTER I- Reiki Introduction – PRACTICAL REIKI: COSMIC HEALING: T. Manohar Rao

position system used in the West. Two, he initiated Mrs Takata to become a Reiki Master; she later
brought Reiki to the West. Mrs. Takata a Japanese lady, born in Hawaii, had returned to Japan for
treatment. Among other things she received Reiki treatment twice a day and got progressively better.
In four months, she was completely healed. Impressed by the results, she wanted to learn Reiki. In the
spring of 1936, Mrs. Takata received First Degree Reiki (Shoden). She worked with Dr. Hayashi for one
year, and then received Second Degree Reiki (Okuden),
Mrs. Takata returned to Hawaii in 1937. She was soon followed by Dr. Hayashi who came to help her
establish Reiki in Hawaii. In 1938, Dr. Hayashi initiated Hawayo Takata as a Reiki Master. She was the
thirteenth and the last Reiki Master that Dr. Hayashi initiated.
th
Between 1970 and her transition on December 11 1980, Mrs. Takata initiated twenty-two Reiki
Masters. The original twenty-two teachers have taught others. In the decade since Mrs. Takata
experienced transition, Reiki has spread rapidly in the West and East and is now practiced throughout
all parts of the world. There are now tens of thousands of Reiki Masters and millions of people
practicing Reiki throughout the world.

WHAT IS REIKI ?

Reiki (pronounced Ray-key) is a Japanese name consisting of two words - “Rei” and “Ki” – meaning
spiritually guided life energy (commonly known as Universal Life Energy), an energy that animates us
all and is found all around us. Reiki is a form of spiritual healing using "universal life energy"
channelled through the practitioner to the recipient. Reiki helps to harmonise body, mind and spirit
for both the healer and anyone she/he wants to heal.
Reiki is an essential and easy method for restoring the vital energy depleted in day-to-day activities,
tensions, worries, etc. With the addition of other powerful techniques and symbols for the needs of
the modern world, the ancient art of healing has now come to be called New Life Reiki. It heals at the
physical, psychological, and spiritual levels as well.
REIKI IS AN EFFECTIVE HEALING METHOD:
Reiki can be used for many ailments like reducing stress, relieving pain, headaches, stomach upsets,
back problems, asthma - respiratory problems, PMT, menstrual problems, sinus, anxiety and many
more conditions. Reiki should never be used instead of medical treatment; it should be used as a
complement to regular treatment, and a way of becoming and remaining healthy.
There is no belief system attached to Reiki so anyone can receive Reiki treatment or Reiki
attunement. As in any healing the first step towards a healthier life is a desire to be healed.
REIKI - A POWERFUL AND GENTLE HEALER:
The main advantage of Reiki compared to other types of alternative healing is that it is completely
safe, and does not harm the healer or the patient. Besides, it has the following attributes:
o Promotes natural self-healing

o Balances the energies in the body

o Balances the organs and glands

o Strengthens the immune system

o Treats symptoms and causes of illness

o Relieves pain and relaxes the body and mind.

10 CHAPTER I- Reiki Introduction – PRACTICAL REIKI: COSMIC HEALING: T. Manohar Rao

o Clears toxins

o Adapts to the natural needs of the receiver

o Enhances personal awareness

o Relaxes and reduces stress

o Promotes creativity

o Releases blocked and suppressed feelings

o Aids meditation and positive thinking

o Heals holistically

REIKI IS EASY TO LEARN:

Anyone can ‘learn’ Reiki. The word “learn” is not quite right as most of us cannot just read about Reiki
and then do it. The ability to use Reiki is normally given via a process of attunement or initiation, i.e.
transfer of power to the student from a trained Reiki Master. There are 5 levels of Reiki: Reiki 1, 2, 3,
the Master and Teacher-Master level. Once attuned, Reiki is easy to use and the ability to use Reiki
will never leave the healer!

Reiki enriches life and gives happiness and health at all levels.

WHAT REIKI IS ABOUT?

The basic concept behind any form of energy healing is that when energy follows thought, then one
can do anything. Reiki, which works at the mental, physical and emotional planes, is one such system.
It is a form of complementary therapy, as only one type of therapy may not be sufficient to treat
complex diseases.
A holistic approach is needed to treat a patient at the mental, physical and emotional levels. Allopathy
works only at the physical level. Other systems like Homeopathy and Ayurveda go a little deeper. Reiki
works at all levels. Prana, a Sanskrit word meaning vital force or existence of life is used as Reiki
energy. "Rei" means universal, and "Ki" the vital force. Hence Reiki means Universal Vital Force or
Energy. It refers to methods to draw on the abundance of Cosmic Energy, and make use of it for
various purposes at will. Cosmic Energy customarily flows through us. In Reiki, the energy is drawn in
through the crown Chakra, and is allowed to flow through the hands or bro-Chakra. When the healer
visualises a person and draws the energy, it then flows to that person.
The person who is offering the energy is known as the energy channel (Healer). He has to allow the
energy to flow through him to another person, for a positive effect to take place. The receiver
(Healee) must co-operate and not block the energy. The healer should be a pure, empty person in
order to allow the energy to flow through him. He has to be in a state of zero level (or alpha state).

H EALING
A persistent feeling of being unbalanced at the physical, mental and emotional levels, suggests that a
person needs healing. Some diseases that cannot be diagnosed or cannot get cured through available
conventional methods; can be cured by alternative methods. There is no disease that cannot be
cured. However, a strong resistance to the idea of alternate treatments, or when most of the body
11 CHAPTER I- Reiki Introduction – PRACTICAL REIKI: COSMIC HEALING: T. Manohar Rao

has been affected at all levels, or the karma effect that has to be suffered, may decide against the
treatment. Reiki may work here as well, but will take a much longer period to cure.
Whatever may be the problem, the basic defect is in energy imbalance, i.e. either over active state, or
under active state. The healer however need not diagnose the disease, but can find the condition, i.e.
depletion or congestion of energy - and treat it, for the treatment is the same in both cases.
There are three types of healing: (1) Whole body, (2) Chakras and (3) Specific points. There are
twenty-five stress points in Reiki, and at least 3 minutes of energy must be given to each of these
stress points. So for an intensive healer it takes 75 minutes to complete a session. The healer need
not see the patient to treat him/her. By using distant healing technique, the energy can be allowed to
pass to the patient, since energy flows with intention.
Reiki healing allows the Universal Energy to flow through the healer by directing the excess energy
into him or towards others. The healer does not ‘lose’ his energy while healing. The channelled
healing avoids energy depletion, and in addition both the healer and the healee simultaneously get
energy. Also Reiki protects against negative traits of others while healing. Besides healing the
diseases, Reiki also provides self-awareness, self-responsibility, and total health at family level,
understanding, adjustment and unity – total happiness at personal level. At the professional level the
healer achieves assessment, planning and execution - total success.
Reiki is very simple to learn, and very easy to practice. Special medical knowledge is not needed. The
most important requirement is faith and intention to learn. Though many books and complete
information are available, one has to undergo attunement or power transfer from a Reiki master.
Only after this, the path of the energy centres is cleared to enable the flow of Reiki into the healer or
Reiki channel.
There are five levels of Reiki training. Each level with higher attunement connects the native to higher
energies thereby making him more powerful. Children above 7-8 years of age can also take up first
level attunement and after assessing, the Reiki Master can initiate them into second-degree level.

CHAPTER 3 - ESSENCE OF REIKI

This section also provides information about three important elements affected by Reiki healing: The
main chakras, the aura and the meridians for mind, body and spirit. Let us discuss these now.

1. THE CHAKRA SYSTEM:

Chakra is a Sanskrit word, which means, "wheel". We have a physical body as well as a subtle body.
From ancient times it was recognised in India that there are special areas of energy or chakras
spinning around different parts of the body, mainly along the spinal cord, from the root or base to the
top of the head. Our chakras are parts of a large network of subtle energies. These chakras were
associated with different physical and psychological functions related to the associated parts of the
body, at the level of the subtle body. The chakras spin in relation to the energy level of the system.
Depletion of energy in any chakra, affects the working of the associated parts of the body and the
emotions as well. It is believed that these chakras can be energised by different methods – through
colours, gems and minerals, food, as well as directly energised by the master. Reiki also works at the
subtle level of the body, so that its impact is felt at the level of the Chakra. Reiki energy flows into the
chakras that are depleted and energises them, and so affects a cure. (See Chapter 4 for more details
of the Chakras and their importance in Reiki).

2. THE AURA SHIELD:

12 CHAPTER I- Reiki Introduction – PRACTICAL REIKI: COSMIC HEALING: T. Manohar Rao

According to ancient Hindu traditions, the body is enveloped in various layers of subtle energies that
are known as kosas or auras. Aura is an energy field or it could also be called our life force. An aura
can actually take two forms:
1. Cosmic Vibratory Energy.

2. Specific Aura surrounding each human body

It is believed that we have a seven-layered aura. The three inner layers are in close relation to our
mind, emotions and physical well being, while the outer three layers are more concerned with our
soul and spirit.
The aura is believed to be in the shape of an egg, which consists of fibrous light encompassing the
whole body. It might appear as something that resembles a heat haze, radiating light and energy, with
every colour imaginable, inclusive of those that are beyond our visible spectrum. Any mental and
physical disturbance is reflected in the aura; in fact many spiritual and psychic healers treat the
patient through the aura, for this is the first layer through which the disease enters the body. (See
Chapter 4 for more on the Aura).
The Aura around humans is partly composed of EM (electromagnetic) radiation, spanning from
microwave, infrared, to UV light. The low frequency microwave and infrared part of the spectrum
(body heat) seems to be related to the low levels of the functioning of our body (DNA structure,
metabolism, circulation etc.) whereas high frequency (UV part) is more related to our conscious
activity such as thinking, creativity, intentions, sense of humour and emotions.

4. THE SYSTEM OF MERIDIANS:

The Chinese in the 3rd millennium B.C. posited the existence of a vital energy, which they called Chi
(life force, life energy). All matter, animate and inanimate, is composed of and pervaded with this
universal energy.
Just as we need blood to flow freely through our body's circulatory system we also need Chi to flow
freely through our system of meridians. In other words, meridians are the equivalent of our blood
vessels but instead of transporting blood, this system transports Chi or life energy. Sickness can occur
when there is a blockage in the meridians and the Chi no longer can flow freely or when the yin and
yang balance of the Chi is disturbed. (The details are given in Chapter 4).

CHAPTER 4

REIKI SYMBOLS, CHAKRAS, MERIDIANS AND AURA

It is necessary to have a passing knowledge about the various terms used in Reiki, and the levels at
which it works. Also from the second degree onwards, symbols are used to convey more power to
the healing, which however, has to be learnt properly from a qualified Reiki Master. A short account
of these will now be given.

1) REIKI SYMBOLS:
The Reiki symbols are like keys, which open doors to a higher mind. They are like buttons; when you
press the button you automatically get a result. It has been considered that one of the functions of
the Reiki symbols is to instantly override the user's precognition that some things cannot be done (i.e.
distance healing). The symbols trigger a belief or intention built into the symbols that helps the user
13 CHAPTER I- Reiki Introduction – PRACTICAL REIKI: COSMIC HEALING: T. Manohar Rao

to get the results intended. The different symbols also quickly connect the user to the universal life
force.
When a Reiki Master does an attunement and shows the Reiki symbols to a student, the form of the
symbol is impressed in the students’ mind and merges with the metaphysical energies it represents.
When a Reiki practitioner draws, thinks about or visualises a symbol it will instantly connect to the
energies it represents.
However, the Reiki symbols as such, and the information that can be read about them are of little
value on their own. In different tests it has been proven that the symbols have little or no use before
a Reiki initiation. Students with no Reiki experience (but with psychic abilities) have been asked to
memorise the symbols and then use them. The results differ from a control group who had been
initiated into Reiki II level. The conclusion is that it is the Reiki initiation that gives the Reiki symbols
their power.
THE THREE REIKI SYMBOLS
Today there are many different forms of Reiki and some have incorporated their own symbols in their
initiations. In “traditional” Reiki, there are three Reiki symbols given during the Reiki II or Second
Degree Reiki Attunement (initiation). They are: the Power symbol (Choku Rei), the Mental/Emotional
symbol (Sei He Ki) and the Distance symbol (Hon Sha Ze Sho Nen).
The Reiki symbols are used to draw the energy from the ether and to transmit it to the object or
patient being treated. In the First Degree Reiki, the healing is done “hands on”, i.e. directly to the
patient who should be physically present before the healer.
But from the Second Degree onwards, it is possible to do distance healing, and healing at the aura
level. Therefore some mystical symbols are taught to the healers, which will help them to tap the
unlimited energy from the Universe, and to direct it to the concerned person, or event across time
and space. In the Second Degree Reiki, it is possible to heal not only people, but also emotions,
patch-up relationships, energise an event taking place in future (for example- an examination or
programme that has to take place after a few days, months or years), and to treat at the aura level.
Since the healer will not be present at the appointed place or time, she/he can send the Reiki energy
through the symbols, as explained below.
Many Reiki Masters consider the Reiki symbols holy and persist in the old Reiki tradition that they
must be kept secret, and should only be available to those who have been initiated at the Reiki 2
level. But today this approach is no longer relevant as the symbols have been described in many
books and are freely available on the Internet.

A. C HOKU R EI :– T HE P OWER S YMBOL ( PRONOUNCED : "C HO -K OO -R AY "):

This is the first symbol used in Reiki. The general meaning of Choku Rei is:
“Place the power of the universe here”. The power symbol can be used to
increase the power of Reiki.
It can also be used for protection. It can be visualised as light switch that has
the intention to instantly boost the ability to channel Reiki energy.
The Reiki healer draws or visualises the symbol in front of him/her and has
instant access to more healing energies. Choku Rei also gives the other symbols more power when
they are used together. The symbol can be used any time during a treatment, but it is especially
effective if it is used in the beginning of a session to empower the Reiki energy, or at the end of a
session, to close the session and seal off the Reiki energies.
14 CHAPTER I- Reiki Introduction – PRACTICAL REIKI: COSMIC HEALING: T. Manohar Rao

This Reiki Power symbol though mainly a power switch, can also be assigned further uses, depending
on the intention of the healer. New “functions” can be added to the Power symbol, by making a clear
statement and intention of what it is you want the symbol to do and it will do it for you.

S OME USES :
• Increase the power of healing abilities; it can be used as a light switch. The healer draws or
visualises “Choku Rei” in front, or draws it in his hands.
• It can be focussed on a specific point of the body like a looking glass. Draw the symbol
directly on the spot being treated.
• Increase the power of the other symbols. Draw it before drawing the other symbols.
• It can be used to close the space around the receiver and to stop the energies received from
disappearing from the body. Draw it above the body with the intention of sealing the healing
process.
• The Power symbol can be used to spiritually clean a room from negative energy, to leave it in
light and make it a holy place. Draw or visualise the symbols on all the walls, ceiling and floor
with the intent to energise the room.
• It can be used to clean crystals and other objects from negative energies. Draw the power
symbol above or on the crystal/object with the intent of cleansing it and restoring it to its
original state. Hold the object in your hands and "give" it Reiki (or send it Reiki from a
distance if it is too big to hold).
• Protection can be given against negative energies from people being treated, or people you
meet. Draw or visualise the Reiki Power symbol in front of you with the intent of being totally
protected.
• Protection for yourself, your children, your spouse, your house and other things valuables
can also be given. Draw Choku Rei directly on the object/person you want to protect with the
intent to protect them from harm. Since Reiki works on all different levels of existence, it will
naturally also give protection on all levels of existence.
These are just a few uses. The healer can use his/her own intuition and imagination to find other uses
for the Reiki Power symbol – Choku Rei. There are no limits to what can be done. The power is all in
your mind; let your clear intention guide the function of the symbols.
Draw it clockwise (shown above) as this seems to work better for many, and it also seems more
logical. There is no right or wrong way; it is your intention that decides the function so just do what
feels best for you.
The horizontal line represents the Reiki source. The vertical line symbolises the energy flow, and the
spiral that touches the middle line seven times represents the seven chakras.

B . S EI H E K I – T HE M ENTAL /E MOTIONAL SYMBOL ( PRONOUNCED AS : "S AY -H AY -K EY "):

Sei He Ki has a general meaning of: “God and man become one”. The
Mental/Emotional symbol brings together the “brain and the body”. It helps
people to bring to the surface and release the mental/emotional causes of
their problems.
Many people, even doctors are starting to realise that many of our ailments
are based on mental and emotional imbalances that we probably are not
even aware of. This symbol works to focus and harmonise the subconscious
with the physical side.
15 CHAPTER I- Reiki Introduction – PRACTICAL REIKI: COSMIC HEALING: T. Manohar Rao

This symbol can be used to help with emotional and mental healing. It balances the left and right side
of the brain and gives peace and harmony. It is also very effective in relationship problems. The Sei He
Ki symbol can also be used on diverse problems like nervousness, fear, depression, anger, sadness,
etc.
The Mental/Emotional symbol, Sei He Ki, has to do with Yin and Yang and the balance between the
two sides of the brain. The left part of the symbol represents Yang and refers to the left side of the
brain, which deals with logic, structure and linear thinking, etc. The right side of the symbol
represents Yin and the right side of the brain, dealing with fantasy, feelings, intuition etc. When
facing another person and drawing the symbol the left side of the symbol, i.e. the Yang part of the
symbol ends up on the receiver's right side of the brain and the Yin part on the left side, thereby
helping to balance the two sides.
S OME USES :
o The symbol can be used to help heal misuse of drugs, alcohol, smoking etc.

o Sei He Ki can be used to lose weight.

o The symbol can be used to find things that you have misplaced. Draw the symbol in front of
you and ask for help in finding X. Let go of trying to find the object. The answer will soon pop
up!

o Sei He Ki can be used to improve your memory when reading and studying. Draw the symbol
on each page as you read, with the intent of remembering the important parts.

o Add the symbol when doing healing (normal or distance) as this can help the healing process.
Many physical problems have mental/emotional roots.

C. H ON S HA Z E S HO N EN – T HE R EIKI D ISTANCE H EALING SYMBOL ( PRONOUNCED AS : "H ON -S HA -

Z EE -S HOW -N EN ")
The form of the Distance symbols is complex and probably this is the symbol with most variations. It
represents the human body incorporating the chakras and the five elements. The symbol has a
general meaning of: “No past, no present, and no future” or it can have the meaning of “The Buddha
in me contacts the Buddha in you.”
As its name implies, the Distance symbol can be used to send energies over a distance. Time and
distance are no problems when using this Reiki symbol. Many practitioners consider Hon Sha Ze Sho
Nen as the most useful and powerful symbol of all.
The use of the symbol gives access to the “Akashic Records”, the life records of
each soul and can therefore be used in karmic healing. Trauma and other
experiences from this life, previous or parallel lives that affect and mirror
people’s behaviours can be brought to light and released.
In doing distance healing the healer has to be open. It is not necessary to focus
the healing efforts on a specific problem like a headache. The Reiki energies have
to be sent without limitation, as they will go where they are best needed. When
doing distance healing the energies will work on the receiver's subtle body, the
Chakras and the Aura, and not as much on the physical level i.e. it can take some
time before the energies seep down to the body and eases for instance pain.
The person receiving the Reiki is likely to feel it happening. If he/she has an open
mind, he/she can usually tell what has been done and when it was done.
Distance healing does not take nearly as long as a hands-on treatment. Only a
16 CHAPTER I- Reiki Introduction – PRACTICAL REIKI: COSMIC HEALING: T. Manohar Rao

few minutes are actually needed to send distance healing. Reiki distance healing can also be set up
to automatically repeat sending energies to a person. If this is done, it should be within a time limit
on the repeat (as it otherwise might continue forever), and it is also to renew and empower the
distance healing every other day. Remember it is the healer’s intention that guides what happens!

S OME USES :
o Send Reiki healing to people far away.

o "Beam" Reiki to people across the room.

o Send Reiki energies to the future to help with a specific task or be there as a support.

o Send Reiki to the past to lift up, to understand and release trauma. Absentee healing is
basically a process of visualisation i.e. imagine or “see” the person to whom the healing has to
be sent. A photo can be used, if one is available; otherwise the person’s name can be
mentioned. Reiki can also be sent to people whom the healer has not met; it could just be a
name received on the phone or email. But that does not matter, as it is the intention of
sending Reiki to this unknown person that makes it work. All doubts should be removed and a
clear intention formulated to use the Reiki symbols and send the energies!

2) THE KOSAS OR SHEATHS:

According to the Hindu system, the body has five sheaths or kosas –
1. Physical – concerning the body,

2. Etheric / Bioplasmic, concerning the Aura or energy,

3. Astral or astrophysical,

4. Mental/ emotional - affects the mind, and

5. Causal - soul.

3) THE AURA:
According to the Hindu system, everyone has many bodies, which extend from their physical body.
There is an emotional body and a mental body as well as a spiritual body. This is the energy projected
through the extended body called the etheric body or ‘Aura’. The aura is an electromagnetic field that
surrounds the body about a metre away and looks like an egg. It is the soul’s light force as it manifests
through the body; the extended energy around the human body which alters in light and colour
depending upon the subject’s state of physical, mental, emotional and spiritual health.
Aura is our subtle body, where energy and matter are interchangeable. Aura can be seen as an energy
field surrounding the body, interacting through spiritual and psychological levels via the Chakras.
Although the seven main chakras have their origin in the physical body, they also exist in all layers of
the aura. The speed and vibration level of energy is increased with each level.
About seven main aura fields are identified, though some seers have seen even 60-80 layers. Some
common names for the aura layers from the inner densest to the outer finest or higher vibration
layer are: 1. Etheric, 2. Emotional, 3. Mental, 4. Causal, 5. Etheric template, 6. Intuitive, and 7. Cosmic.
These names are by no means complete or definitive, and several of the individual layers, and the
whole system is often called the astral body.
17 CHAPTER I- Reiki Introduction – PRACTICAL REIKI: COSMIC HEALING: T. Manohar Rao

These aura layers are not separated from one another, but penetrate each other, beginning at the
centre. The vibration of each level becomes finer and higher as we go from the inside out. Since we
are only part of a vast inter connected energy universe, only the individual human aura is mentioned
here. Plants and animals, and even inanimate objects also have auras, but they differ in structure in
varying degrees from the Human aura. These seven auras and the colours associated with them will
also be discussed.
The aura is very sensitive and picks up feelings or perceived inklings about others through the energy
exchange when auras meet. If we are aware of this and become sensitive to it, we tend to get
intuitional feelings about people’s emotional states and their attitudes, and quite often their
conversation usually confirms what we feel.
The aura is not usually seen by the naked eye, even though Kirlian photographers have documented
its existence. It has various planes, each existing simultaneously within the auric field, and inter
dimensionally overlaid within one another. The aura is a virtual hologram in the truest sense of the
word. Our aura is made up of many layers we call the etheric body, and these vary in size depending
on each person’s energy levels. The energies that make up the aura are the mental energy, emotional
energy and spiritual energy. This can be felt in relationships as the aura plays a huge part in the
attraction of others. We literally feel how the other person reacts to us physically, emotionally,
mentally and spiritually through the aura.
Energy work changes unhealthy conditions within the human energy system, promoting a healthy
energy field/aura, producing harmony and balance. In this balanced state, humans become more
conscious of ‘self’, and their connection to others and all living things; it helps to radiate energy from
chakras, the level of conscious awareness is lifted and the healing process begins.
1. T HE F IRST L AYER : E THERIC - P RIMARY H EALTH A URA
It is the first part of the aura, where the state between energy and matter is composed of tiny energy
lines, light beams generated by the living tissues of cells, and the functions of human physiology. It
emanated 2-5 centimetres from the body, as well as internally as the meridian grid system, used by
acupuncturists, reflexologists and massage therapists. Some people are able to see the etheric
outlines of the internal organs. Some people see a light blue on dark blue grid. Survival issues, the
physical body function and physical sensation of pain, pleasure, automatic functions etc, are
associated with this aura layer.
2. T HE S ECOND L AYER - E MOTIONAL B ODY
Many aura readers have found this layer to consist of soft, many coloured clouds of light visible from
one to six inches. This aura shows dark spots or cloudy area and stagnant areas, where emotional
blocks and pain exist.
This portion of the aura is associated with feelings. All
sensations, emotions and desires are part of this layer.
Sometimes call the ‘astral body’; it holds all the
memories and deep emotional responses to your
experiences. Interaction of people takes place at this
level. Pleasant or unpleasant differences are felt here.
People forming relationships develop cords out of their
chakras connecting them. These cords exist on may of
the auric layers.
This layer is where one experience relationships, abuse,
job-related experiences and all traumas and joys. Its
structure is quite fluid like clouds of fine substance in
continual motion.
18 CHAPTER I- Reiki Introduction – PRACTICAL REIKI: COSMIC HEALING: T. Manohar Rao

The astral part of this layer is amorphous and it composed of clouds of colour. It extended 26
centimetres from the body.
3. T HE T HIRD L AYER - M ENTAL B ODY
This is the portion of the body comprising of thoughts, opinions, intellectual knowledge, memories,
beliefs, and self-perceptions of identity and reality. It is said to be associated with personal power. It
contains the structure of our ideas. Within this field, thought forms can be seen, clairvoyants connect
at this level. It extends from 6-25 centimetres from the body, and is beyond the emotional body,
composed of a still finer substance.
These three bodies are the lower astral and together are said to make up the personality. These are
said to begin to be created at conception and dissolve at death.
4. T HE F OURTH L AYER - E THERIC B ODY
Higher Astral, Heart Chakra, consists of many coloured clouds, associated with the heart and love. It
connects the lower three with the higher three auras. Virtually all-healing energy comes through this
layer; it is the layer of love, both specific and universal, and the first of the spiritual layers. Energy
webbing or underlying foundations hold together the aura as a holographic unit. This grid structure is
what the physical aura builds on. It carries the primal pattern of the individual’s existence, and
consciousness at all other levels of reality. It reflects all the possibility of the individual’s current
incarnation. It is at this level that sound transforms matter, and that sound is most effective for
healing the body. It extends 25-50 centimetres from the body.
5. T HE F IFTH L AYER : A TMIC - C ELESTIAL B ODY
Bliss, throat Chakra, the higher aspects of the will more connection with the divine will, speech and
communication, listening, taking responsibility for one’s own actions, are qualities of this aura, and it
is seen by some as a blue grid light ball. It is very rare for people to be really aware of this layer, but
when balanced and active, it can promote bliss and a feeling of being moved by the divine. This is the
emotional level of the spiritual plane in which spiritual ecstasy is experienced. Meditations, initiations
such as Reiki attunement and transformational work are experienced on this level. It is the point of
being where one knows one’s connection with the entire universe. Through it can be seen both light
and love in everyone and everything. It extends 50 - 75 centimetres from the body.
6. T HE S IXTH L AYER : I NTUITIVE - T HE S PIRITUAL P LANE
Brow Chakra has been noticed to be made of multicoloured threads of light. It is associated with
spiritual communication, Divine Love, nurturing awareness of oneself as an aspect of God, Love of all
life and union with the all. This is the mental level of the individual’s spiritual plane, connected
knowingly with the spirit. It is the outer shell of the egg-shaped aura. It contains all the auric bodies
associated with the present life the individual is living. It is composed of tiny threads of gold and silver
(male and female essences) and holds the aura together. All the chakras receive energy first through
this level. Reiki is received through this layer first. This is the strongest, most resilient level of the auric
field. Its power current pulses up and down the spine (the Kundalini) carrying energies through the
roots of each chakra, and connecting the energies taken through each chakra. This plane holds the
individual’s present spiritual life’s plan. It extends out roughly one metre from the body.
7. S EVENTH L AYER – C OSMIC U NIVERSAL
The seventh layer is an Etheric ball of golden or white light threads, or Crown Chakra. It is connected
to the higher mind, connection with the divine and spiritual information and the integration of the
spiritual and physical aspects of being.

4) THE 12 PRIMARY MERIDIANS

There are two systems of channels or meridians, namely primary and secondary meridians in the
human body. Primary meridians pass through internal organs but secondary do not. There are 12 pairs
of primary meridians with Chi flowing in continuous circulation through the following organs: lungs,
colon, stomach, spleen, heart, intestines, urinary bladder, kidneys, pericardium, triple warmer, gall
bladder and liver. THE MERIDIANS
The primary meridians are named by the organ they are connected to
i.e. lung meridian, heart meridian etc.
Almost all points used in acupuncture and acupressure are situated
along the primary meridians.
But just because the meridians are named according to thet organs
they pass through it does not mean that they only correspond to
these organs and their functions. The meridians also consist of
complex interrelated systems for the circulation of Chi.

R EIKI AND THE MERIDIANS :

Blockages in meridians can be dissolved
dissolved by Reiki and help restore the body's healthy flow of Chi.

5) YIN AND YANG: YIN YANG

This Chi contains two polar forces, the yin and the yang. When the
yin and yang are balanced, the living system exhibits physical health;
when they are unbalanced, a diseased state results. Reiki treatment
balances the yin and yang and facilitates a smooth flow of Chi
through the meridian system
Overly powerful yang results in excessive organic activity,
activity, while predomination of yin makes for
insufficient functioning. Either imbalance
imba results in physical illness.
The ancient art of acupuncture and acupressure focuses on balancing the yin and the yang. Reiki also
helps in balancing the female and male sides of the subject.

6) THE CHAKRAS:
The physical body is seen to be influenced
influenced by the other four sheaths. Of these, the Etheric or Energy
system is targeted for treatment in Reiki and other Energy-based
Energy based systems, such as Pranic Healing. The
etheric, or bioplasmic or energy body is invisible, but has been proved to exist scientifically,
scientifical by means
of a special photographic technique called “Kirlian Photography.” This energy body or aura extends
roughly one foot from the physical body. It has been noticed by psychic healers, that the aura tends to
be affected if the patient is suffering from any ailment.
The energy body contains Energy Centres called Chakras (which means ‘wheels’ in Sanskrit, so called
because they rotate). Since the Reiki treatment is basically directed to the different chakras of the
body, it is necessary for the healer
healer to have some idea about the chakras, their position, functions, and
malfunctions. This will help him/her to identify the problem with its associated charkas and by
directing Reiki to it, will help decongest and energise it. Healing the Chakra and energising
energis it, leads to
healing of the diseases associated with its malfunctioning. (See Appendix for a picture of the chakras).
The major chakras not only control and energise the vital organs of the body, but also control the
affected person's physiological and spiritual conditions. The seven major chakras, their Sanskrit names
along with the colours and other attributes associated with them are given below

Smaller chakras exist in the palms of the hands and feet. The former are used as the means through
which Reiki energy flows from the healer to the patient. The Universal Energy flows into the healer’s
body through the top of the head; and it is the crown chakra that is activated by the initiation
ceremony. Therefore during the initiation ceremony, the crown chakra is activated, and the blocks
and sluggishness of other chakras of the initiate are cleared to make way for the inflow of Reiki during
the healing session.
THE CHAKRAS AND HEALING:
1. Root Chakra: is situated at the base of the spine. It is the seat of physical activity, the fundamental
urge survive and creative expression. It is associated with the following parts of the body:
23 CHAPTER I- Reiki Introduction – PRACTICAL REIKI: COSMIC HEALING: T. Manohar Rao

The muscular and skeletal system, The Spine, Production of quality blood, The adrenal glands, Tissues
of the body and internal organs, Growth rate of cells, Growth rate of children, General vitality, Body
heat - temperature, and it also affects the heart and sex organs.
Malfunctioning: of this Chakra may manifest as: Arthritis and rheumatism, Spinal problems, Blood
ailments and allergy, Slow healing of wounds and broken bones, Growth problems, Cancer,
leukaemia, Low vitality, Heat ailments, Brain ailments and Sexual ailments.
2. Sacral Chakra: is placed above the genital organs. It is the centre of sexual energy and also extra-
sensory perception. It is associated with the following: The sexual organs, The bladder and urethra,
The legs, Throat and head areas are also energised and affected by the Sex Chakra
Malfunctioning: The Ajna Chakra, Throat Chakra and Root Chakra have strong influence on the Sacral
Chakra. Malfunctioning of any of these Chakras may adversely affect its functioning. It may manifest
as: Urinary problems, Impotency, Sterility, Enlarged prostate gland, and Other sexual ailments.
3. Solar Plexus Chakra: is situated just above the navel. This is the seat of all emotions and feelings,
poser and wisdom. The organs corresponding to this centre are: Diaphragm, Liver, Pancreas, Stomach,
Large and small intestines, and Adrenal glands. The Solar Plexus Chakra also affects heart, lungs and
other parts of the body.
Malfunctioning of this Chakra will manifest as: Difficulty in breathing, Diabetes, Ailments of pancreas,
Digestive ailments, Hepatitis, Ailments of the gall bladder, High cholesterol level, Heart ailments,
and Blood ailments.
4. Heart Chakra: is positioned in the middle of the chest. The heart Chakra is the centre of
compassion, devotion and love, as well as the centre of higher or refined emotions. It is very closely
related to the solar plexus since both are emotional centres. Solar plexus Chakra malfunctioning also
agitates the Heart Chakra. That is why negative emotions have an effect on the physical heart in the
long run. The heart Chakra also affects the ability of the body to fight infections. From a medical point
of view the thymus gland in an important factor in the defence system of the body.
Energising the heart is done through the back heart Chakra, which allows energy to flow easily into
the heart, lungs, and other parts of the body, without causing the physical heart to be congested.
5. Throat Chakra. As stated it is situated at the throat. It is the Chakra of communication and self-
expression. It is associated with Thyroid, Voice box, Air tube, Para thyroid, Lymphatic system and also
affects the sex Chakra.
Malfunctioning: of this chakra may manifest as: Sterility, Throat related ailments such as goitre, sore
throat, loss of voice, and Asthma.
6. Third Eye Chakra: lies in the middle of the forehead. It is the intuition centre and centre for inner
wisdom. It is the seat of the will, intellect and the spirit. It is also called the Master Chakra, as it
controls the pituitary gland, which in turn controls the entire body, all the major chakras, the
endocrine systems and all the vital organs.
Malfunctioning: Dysfunction of this Chakra may manifest as: Diseases of the endocrine glands, Eye
ailments, and Cancer.
7. Crown Chakra: is positioned at the top of the head. It is the opening to the universe, and
represents the highest consciousness; connecting us with our spiritual self energises the brain and the
pineal gland.
Malfunctioning: of this Chakra may manifest as: Diseases of the pineal gland and the brain, which
may manifest as physical or physiological illnesses.

PREPARATION FOR GIVING REIKI

By now the reader must have a good idea about the concepts and spheres in which Reiki works, and it
is now time to look at the methods followed in giving Reiki to patients. No elaborate preparations are
required; just a few fundamental rules need to be followed for administering Reiki.
The healer must align him/herself with the cosmic forces before proceeding to give the treatment.
Through proper nourishment (healthy and balanced), proper exercise, spiritual discipline or
purification process, the healer’s vibration should reach up and out to the Universal energies that will
flow through him/her. The raising of one's own vibration to connect the healing energy is a must,
before channelling can take place.
Before starting the day of healing, it is good and essential to undertake the following: Physical
exercises to keep the body fit and to energise the chakras, Meditation, Self-healing and Protection
shielding.
Before starting the healing of the whole body, it is essential to do the invocation to the family deity,
the Reiki masters, Reiki guides, spiritual masters, spiritual guides and the personal Reiki guide, to help
you to perform the treatment, to guide and bless you, and to correct any lapses during the treatment.
The above prayer/invocation may be recited.
25 CHAPTER I- Reiki Introduction – PRACTICAL REIKI: COSMIC HEALING: T. Manohar Rao

Reiki Prayer
“I join my hands and ask that I may act as a Reiki channel and pray
for healing of the person on whom I lay my hands. I symbolically accept
myself in a loving manner and am able to make deep contract with the
patient and accept him lovingly with all his faults, both his light and
dark side.

“I bow with my hands on the Ajna level which gives me the knowledge and acceptance
of my personal path which may not always be as per plan, but be guided by my inner
self, and the divine path.
“I accept the person who is being treated, I accept his freedom to use Reiki Energy
as he chooses and need not be as I think he should be. With gestures of my hands, I
bow my head and surrender the responsibility of treating to the Divine Power. I
fully acknowledge the dignity of the human being before me.

REIKI TREATMENT
The patient should relax fully clothed, either seated or reclining on a couch, while the healer holds his
hands on or above the patient. A treatment can last an hour or longer depending on the treatment
required. Many practitioners use the standard hand positions and commonly a full treatment is given
covering all the important organs of the body.
There is no pressure on the body, making it ideal for treating all ages and conditions, sometimes
hands are even held away from the body. The energy flows wherever it is required, as it is spiritually
guided, and can normally be felt as a warm sensation or tingling in the body. Receiving Reiki is a very
relaxing and soothing experience!
FIXED SET OF HAND POSITIONS - CONTRA INTUITIVE POSITIONS:
Traditionally many Reiki practitioners give the whole body treatment covering all the hand positions.
This method gives a very good overall healing effect and can be recommended if in doubt about the
cause of the problem to be treated. Since the Reiki energy is spiritually guided it will in the end go
where it is needed. Many practitioners have found that by being guided by their intuition they can
reach even better results. Of course the healer will be told during the initiation programme about
how to use his hands for healing.
HOW TO ASSESS IF A PERSON HAS BEEN CURED:
The healer can feel the where the energy field force is congested or depleted by scanning. The patient
will sense a perfect balance - at the point where the treatment is given, since Reiki itself helps the
practitioner to identity the organs and chakras that are affected. Just by scanning, or dowsing, the
26 CHAPTER I- Reiki Introduction – PRACTICAL REIKI: COSMIC HEALING: T. Manohar Rao

healer can pinpoint the areas affected. More importantly, the practitioner must believe in the
supernatural power i.e. in Divine Energy, which can find the affected parts and induces healing.
The healer should feel that he is only a channel and the energy is flowing through him from above.
Reiki does not over-energise, it is an intelligent system, because the patient absorbs only that amount
of energy that he needs. Also the healer absorbs his quota of energy while treating. The more he
treats, the more energy will be absorbed by him. The healer must enforce his own discipline and
must practice daily. Self-healing/treatment is very essential for the healer. He must be a free channel
and not block any energy. He must have a code of ethics, be pure inside, always with good intentions,
and strive for a good cause. He must never entertain any negative attitude. (Caution: Never do
healing or attunement when under influence of alcohol or drugs, or when angry or when feeling ill.)

1. S TARTING THE R EIKI TREATMENT :

Coming now to the modalities of treatment, it is necessary to smoothen the aura of the patient first.
First of all the healer should place his left hand on his own solar plexus and with the right hand palm
facing down move it along the midline of the patient's body, from head to foot at a distance of about
8 inches (200 mm) above the body. Having reached the feet, the hand should be put in a vertical
position and passed closely over the healer’s body. This should be repeated three times. Then the
healer should place his left hand on the sacral, and repeat the above procedure again.
The above should be repeated when the treatment is closed also, with the vertical hand sweeping
from pelvis to crown, three times. Then the healer should thank the Divine, Reiki, and the Masters for
their help and guidance given to transfer the Reiki Energy and thus complete the treatment.

2. T REATMENT :
After preliminary preparation and aura synchronisation, treatment of the patient starts. This consists
of the following steps:
1. By giving whole body treatment.
2. By treating the afflicted parts of the body, by opening the concerned Chakra.
3. Shielding the patient.
4. Thanksgiving to the Divine, Reiki, and Master.

CHAPTER 6

REIKI TREATMENT (COSMIC HEALING)

By the study of the previous chapters, the reader may have acquired general information about Reiki.
If not initiated, it is now time for you to attend Reiki sessions and become a Reiki channel. After
obtaining the degrees at various levels, you will have confidence and faith in this divine treatment
system. You may have also planned to start a healing clinic of your own. As in any other system you
must plan your mode of operation before starting your activities. Various steps in this direction are
now provided, which may act as a guide or base for you.
Though Reiki treatment does not require any special preparations, it is essential to have some
minimum facilities in your clinic so as to create a peaceful and harmonious environment. Your may
provide the following:
o Have subdued lighting or natural sunlight.

o Relaxing music.
27 CHAPTER I- Reiki Introduction – PRACTICAL REIKI: COSMIC HEALING: T. Manohar Rao

o An ioniser to provide naturally charged oxygen ions (to refresh the air).

o A washbasin and soap to wash your hands after each treatment.

o A comfortable sofa and comfortable couch for the patient, at a reasonable height with space
to move all round.

o Some tissue paper to wipe your hands.

o Avoid strong smell in the room. .

o It is better to remain undisturbed during the healing session, so disconnect electric devices,
and telephones etc. that will distract you and the patient.

The patient/ client must be seated and after preliminaries, it is very essential for you to have a
dialogue with him/her regarding the aliments/problems, and a history prepared. This chart must
include the nature, the period of the disease, the treatment being taken, and history of his ailment
any surgical treatment, etc. You should also establish the schedule, and energy exchange (fees).
Explain the process of treatment, and the advantages connect with it. If the patient agrees to take the
treatment, then proceed as follows:
Ask the prospective patient as to when he would like to have his treatment started, and
schedule for a series of three to four days treatment. Inform the patient that he may feel worse
after some treatment, and if so continuous treatment for 3 to 4 days will be required.
Note down the clinical and surgical history of the patient.
Create an environment as quiet, comfortable and soothing as possible.
Ask the patient to remove glasses, shoes, jackets, vests, belt, scarf, jewellery around the neck,
watches, and to empty his pockets.
Make him lie on a comfortable table/couch, with pillow under his head, and tell him to keep his
legs and arms straight, without crossing them.
Wash your hands with soap and water before starting the treatment. Do the invocation and Reiki
symbols with mantras, and start the treatment. Check the states of the chakras by dowsing.
° Cleanse the aura between Ajna and Root, by placing the palm above them for about 3-5 minutes,
to synchronise with the patient's vibration, as stated above.
° Start with whole body treatment and then channel Reiki to the afflicted areas.
° Keep your fingers together during treatment.
° Close the treatment with the Reiki symbol.
° Ask the patient to relax before getting up, as he may feel heaviness immediately after the
treatment.
R EIKI T REATMENT :
Ask the patient to stretch out on his back, with legs spread out a bit and arms lying in a relaxed
condition away from his body. As the healer, hold your hands over the heart and solar chakras, at a
distance of 10-15 cms from the client’s body, while concentrating your attention to probe into the
occurrences inside his body. This helps in establishing a rapport with the clients by adapting the aura's
field vibrations of both the healer and the patient, and provides effective smooth energy flow. Then
hold your hands over the particular chakras, till you feel a sort of resonance, or feelings of acceptance
without touching the patient.

Now change your hands over to two positions to right or left of the centre of the body, directly under
the collarbone and above the breasts. To enhance the effect move your hands horizontally and
vertically for about five minutes.

Now place your hands on the top of the head and give gentle
stokes on the arm, from a distance of 10-15 cms down beyond
the hands. Then move them back towards the head, with the
hands about 50 cms away. Repeat the same on the other arm.

Place the hands above the top of the head, first to the right, then
left of the midline of the body of the patient, up to the middle of
the right and left thighs. Repeat this some 5 to 10 times.
Proceeding down to the hip bones feel the vibrations for a
moment, then extend to the leg to beyond the foot, before
coming back to the hip, maintaining 50 cms distance from the
patient, so as not to disturb the flow of aura.

After cleansing and stabilising the auras as given above, it is

necessary to energise the important charkas to provide

harmonious state of aura field a greater stability. It is essential to
do the above with Ajna, Heart, Solar, and Sacral Chakras.

D YNAMISATION OF THE AURA :

Put your palms parallel to the soles of the client’s feet, and feel your way into the flow of aura in
there. Hand strokes of about 20 cms from the foot up to the area of the navel from a distance of 50
cms. should be done during the return stroke. Repeat the same on the other leg.
Hold the hands above the lower belly (abdomen) for a time and feel the energy. Then stroke first
right and then the left of the body's midline up to chest. Check for energy at the heart level. Continue
stoking upward, first over the shoulder and arms, down to the hands and not beyond. Repeat on
other shoulder and hand.
Get back to heart Chakra. Feel the energy stroke gently up to hairline. Ask the client to rest for some
time before leaving. Depending on the progress of the patient, continue the treatment for a few more
sessions.
In Part II, we shall be discussing various common diseases that can be treated with Reiki. These
diseases are not exhaustive or complete, nor is Reiki restricted only to the treatment of these
diseases. They are given to enable the healers to get an idea about the physiological and mental
conditions of the patients suffering from various ailments, and enable the healer to channel Reiki to
the afflicted parts. With experience, the healer will be able to expand his field of operation to many
other diseases and other conditions as well. Reiki itself will help the healer to identify and treat the
affliction.
