RINGFEDER Locking Assemblies RfN 7015

Characteristics
The Locking Assemblies of this series present as the known
Locking Assemblies of the RfN 7012 series all positive features of a frictional shaft-hub connection. It is recommended to
use them in every application that requires high transmission
values and outstanding centering abilities or the special demands of a belt drum fastening or similar conditions. Two types are available:
RfN 7015.0 as a standard version,
RfN 7015.1 as a belt drum Locking Assembly,
whereby the latter differs from the standard version by lower surface pressures which are brought in to line with the total load.

The outstanding characteristics of both versions are:

Fig. 1 RINGFEDER Locking Assembly RfN 7015

TRANSMISSION OF HIGH PERIPHERAL FORCES

The angles of the cones generally permit the transmission

of the required torques or axial forces by only one Locking Assembly RfN 7015.0

GOOD CENTERING ABILITY

Due to the centering web and the relatively large design (long
guides) the Locking Assemblies RfN 7015 center according to
their manufacturing accuracy.

SIMPLIFIED MANUFACTURE

The double-tapered execution allows relatively large mounting

tolerances. In addition, as all working surfaces for the clamping
and releasing movements lie inside of the Locking Assembly,
there are no high demands made to the surface qualities of shaft
and hub.

EASY MOUNTING

Only a few commercially available screws must be tightened.

Fitting work is not required.

EASY REMOVAL

Locking Assemblies RfN 7015 are removed by means of thrust

screws. As the clamping and releasing threads are equal, the
existing locking screws can be used for this task.

HIGH FATIGUE STRENGTH UNDER

ALTERNATING TORSIONAL STRESSES

Neither shaft nor hub feature grooves. Thus, a high polar section modulus is at the disposal of the designer and the notch effect is minimized according to the system.

OVERLOAD PROTECTION EFFECT

When the permissible load is exceeded, the Locking Assemblies

will slip. In this way, they safeguard valuable machine components against damage. However, the Locking Assembly connection is subject to the same laws as all other frictional locking
connections, and is not suitable for use as a slipping clutch.

EASY ADJUSTABILITY

Hubs can be located at any point on the shaft and are adjustable to precise angles.

BACKLASH FREE RUNNING

Forming a frictional locking connection, Locking Assemblies

RfN 7015 have absolutely no play.

EASY CALCULATIONS

This catalogue lists all interesting data in the form of quick-reference tables.

Mounting of Locking Assembly

Explanations

The values for T, Fax, p and p apply to Locking Assemblies installed in an oiled condition.

d x D, L, l, L1 =
Basic dimensions, Locking Assemblies not tightened

For further details see page 8.

dG = Clamping/released thread
T

Surface finishes

= Transmissible torque

For shafts and hub bores:

Ra % 3,2 m.

Fax = Transmissible axial force

p

= Surface pressure between Locking Assembly and shaft

Tolerances

p = Surface pressure between Locking Assembly and hub

We recommend the following mounting tolerances:

TA = Maximum tightening torque for the screws considered

in order to determine the values T, Fax, p and p.

Shaft: h8 / Hub: H8
Location of several Locking Assemblies RfN 7015.0
2 Locking Assemblies at most can be installed directly one
after the other. In this case the transmission values of the above
table will double.
Change of screw tightening torques
A reduction of the contact pressures and the transmission
values by diminished tightening of the screws is possible. The
admissible lower limit results from the multiplication of the TA
values of the above table by 0,8.
There is an approximately linear connection between TA, T,
Fax, p and p (hub and hollow shaft calculation according to
the equations on page 5)!

For hubs with B , b + k, but a minimum width B = L you must

choose p for aforementioned formulae instead of pred .

If 2 Locking Assemblies are used one behind the other, the values of the preceding table also apply if the dimensions b and B
are increased by L1.

The values apply to:

Mounting of Locking Assembly

Explanations

The values for T, Fax, p and p apply to Locking Assemblies installed in an oiled condition.

d x D, L, l, L1 =
Basic dimensions, Locking Assemblies not tightened

For further details see page 8.

dG = Clamping/released thread
T

Surface finishes

= Transmissible torque

For shafts and hub bores:

Ra % 3,2 m.

Fax = Transmissible axial force

Location of several Locking Assemblies RfN 7015.1
2 Locking Assemblies at most can be installed directly one
after the other. In this case the transmission values of the
above table will double.
Change of screw tightening torques
A reduction of the contact pressures and the transmission values by diminished tightening of the screws is possible. The admissible lower limit results from the multiplication of the TA values of the above table by 0,5.
There is an approximately linear connection between TA, T,
Fax, p and p (hub and hollow shaft calculation according to
the equations on page 7)!

Data taking adm. bending moments in account see page 13

For hubs with B , b + k, but a minimum width B = L you must

choose p for aforementioned formulae instead of pred .

Explanations

If 2 Locking Assemblies are used one behind the other, the values of the preceding table also apply if the dimensions b and B
are increased by L1.

The values apply to:

1 Locking Assembly RfN 7015.1, fitted using oil
B ^ b + k; b ^ L1; k ^ L1 - L

Installation and removal instructions
Installation

Removal

Since the force is transmitted by contact pressure and friction

between functional surfaces, condition of contact surfaces and
proper tightening of the locking screws are of great importance
(see point 1).

The Locking Assemblies RfN 7015 are to be removed as

follows:

1. All contact surfaces, including screw threads and screw

head bearing surface, must be clean and slightly oiled. (Do
not use Molybdenum Disulphide!) In this condition, the
shaft, hub and Locking Assemblies are to be assembled.

2. Remove the screws adjacent to each threaded bore and screw

them into these bores.

1. Loosen all screws by a few turns.

2.1 The front thrust ring is released by having the jack screwspressed against the web of the inner ring (see Fig. 7).

1.1 Unscrew all locking screws far enough so that only few
threads are engaged in the rear thrust ring. For shipping
purposes, these screws have been screwed in quite deep.

2.2 The rear thrust ring is released by having the jack screws inserted in the threaded bore of the inner ring web and thus
pushing it out (Fig. 8).

1.2 With larger Locking Assemblies, it is advantageous to

insert several locking screws into the corresponding
threads of the front thrust ring according to Fig. 7 and push
against them.
2. After the Locking Assembly is placed in position, slightly
tighten all locking screws (screwed into the rear thrust ring)
and make final alignment and adjustment of the connection.
3. Tighten screws evenly in diametrically opposite sequence
and do this in two or three stages up to the indicated tightening torque (TA).
4. Re-check tightening torque by applying it to all screws all
the way around. When no screw will turn any more, the assembly is completed.

Fig. 7

Fig. 6

Used Locking Assemblies have to be cleaned and slightly oiled

prior to installation and re-assembled according to Fig. 6.
When re-assembling, it is important to make sure that all threaded holes of the rear thrust ring (1) are in line with the holes in
web of inner ring (3) and front thrust ring (4). Threaded removal holes in front thrust ring must be located opposite blanc spaces in web of inner ring, and the threaded removal holes in web
of inner ring must be located opposite blanc spaces of rear
thrust ring.
To correctly execute the assembly the index bores of the thrust
rings 1 and 4 have to point in direction of the screw heads and
to be in line with the index bore of the inner ring 3, whereas the
marking groove of the inner ring must point in opposite direction.

Fig. 8

3. Pull or push hub and Locking Assemblies off the shaft. The
jack screws should be removed only after the Locking Assembly has been taken out of the hub.
Dis-assemble and clean dirty, undamaged Locking Assemblies
before re-use.

Construction hints

Fig. 9 Installation of a shaft-mounted gearing by means of

a Locking Assembly RfN 7015.0

The adjustment and centering are obtained by the aid of the

centering web of the Locking Assembly and of the additional
support between the hollow shaft of the gearing and the driven
shaft.

Fig. 10 Installation of a shaft-mounted gearing by means

of a combination of Locking Assemblies RfN 7015.0
and RfN 7012

In case of extremely high torques the transmissibility of the

connection can be increased by additionally installing a Locking
Assembly RfN 7012. The inner and outer diameters of this series are identical with those of the series RfN 7015. During the
fitting attention must be paid to the screw tightening torque of
each concerned type.

Construction hints

Fig. 11 Belt drum mounted using Locking Assemblies

RfN 7015
With this and similar constructions the main criterion is to be
found in the admissible bending load. For limitation of this
load we have on condition of elastic drum bottoms up to now
determined a certain shaft deflection as related to the bearing
distance and thus as corresponding angle of deflection at the fit-

ting point of the Locking Assembly. Thus, an angle deflection

< 6 or the maximum shaft deflection fm as related to the bearing distance I were permitted at 1/2000 1/3000. Constructions based on these experimental values can, however, be optimised by designing in accordance with the permissible bending
moment of the Locking Assembly used (see table on page 11).

Fig. 12 Distribution of surface pressures

The chosen diagram shows the correlation between the surface

pressures derived from the clamping and the bending moment.
Basic limitations for the superposition of those surface pressures are additionally shown.
(Please also refer to the explanations given on the next page.)

Explanations to the table above

From an actual bending moment one will get a superposition of
the surface pressure derived from the clamping action with a,
due to its principle, increasing or decreasing effect per revolution. For the calculation of the above data a minimum surface
pressure as well as limitation due to the strength of the structural members have been taken into account. Those above listed
combined pressures have to be taken into consideration when
calculating hubs and shafts; accordingly calculated hub outside
diameters may be taken from the tables shown on the pages 12
and 13.

Additionally the above listed torque values (T) had due to the
bending moments to be reduced. To derive lower stresses at all
