WecurrentlyuseMaterialMasters(type:DIEN)forprocurementofallexternalservices.I'vebeentold
itwasn'tagoodpracticeandthatServiceMastersshouldbeadaptedforthispurpose.Isthatso?Iam
nowpreparingabusinesscaseforimplementationofServiceMasters.Whatbenefitsaretherefor
usingtheServiceMastersandServiceTypePurchaseOrdersinsteadofDIENMaterialMasters?

Hello,

AsperStd.SAPwehaveExternalServiceManagementinMMtohandleServiceProcurement.

Sinceweareprocuringaservice,wecanhandlethesamethroughServicemastersratherthan
materialmaster(DIEN).

Ifweusematerialmaster(DIEN)wefollowthenormalprocedureofPOMIGO&MIRO.

ButifweactivateExternalservicemanagementbyusingServicemasters,wehavefollowthebelow
mentionedprocess

CreateServicePO
ReleaseServicePO
CreateServiceEntrySheet
DoserviceEntryAcceptance
MIROwithreferencetoServiceEntrysheet.

Usingtheaboveprocesswehavetheadvantageofusingserviceentrysheetcreation&acceptance
insteadwherewecandoacceptanceaspertheservicerenderedbyvendor.

Alsoifrequiredwehavetheoptionofconfiguringreleaseprocedureforserviceentrysheetssothat
beforeacceptingtheservicewecandoavalidationbasedonwhichpaymenttothevendorwillbe
made.

InMM,thereasubmodulecalledexternalservicemanagementanditcatersforservices.

Oneoftheadvantagesofservicemasterisreporting.servicemastershasadifferentnumberrange
andmaterialmaster(DIEN)hasthesamematerialnumberwithstockmaterials.

Servicemastersaremainlyusedtodifferenciateduringreporting.

MaterialtypeDIENisusedforwhenyouoffer"SERVICE"toyourcustomer.

ForprocurementofservicefromvendoryoucanuseprocessofExternalServicesManagement
whereyouhaveservicemaster(AC03).InthisprocessPurchaseorder/Serviceorder(youcanhave
separatePOdocumenttype)createdwithAcc.assignment'K'(orCorPofFasrequirement)and
Itemcategory'D',thesystemautomaticallypickUOMis"1"activityunitinItemOverviewandinitem
detailsyouneedtomaintaintheservicemaster,UOM,quantity&price/unitandthenG/Laccount
withcostcentercreated.

NextstepsyoucreateServiceEntrySheet(SES),hereyouarejustrecognizingvendorperformed
servicewhereyoucanseecostobject(costcenter),quantityofservicetobeprovidedalready&save
thedocument.NoFIdocumentcreatedaftercreating/maintainingtheServiceEntrySheetbutonce
youreleasetheServiceEntrySheet,thenonlyFIdocumentcreated.

NowyoucandoMIROwithrespecttoServiceEntrySheetwhichalreadyrecognizedandaccepted.

Thankyoueveryoneforyouranswers.Iam,however,moreinterestedinthepotentialbenefitsrather
thantheprocessofcreationofSMs.WhyisitabadpracticetohaveMMDIENssetupforexternally
procuredservices?Thematerialnumberrangeforservicesisdifferent,thereportsarebasedonSAP
producthierarchy(oneofthefieldsintheMMbasicview)andseemtobefairlyaccurate.Whyswitch
toservicemasters?

Serviceisanintangiblematerial&asservicescannotbestored,amaterialmasterrecordofthis
materialtypedoesnotcontaininventorydata.TomapinSAP,wehave......
TogetServicefromVendor,youcanuseServicemasterinPurchaseOrder/ServiceOrder.For
SellingServiceyoucangoforcreatingsalesorderwithmaterialwithmaterialtype(DIEN
materialtype)andsaleit.Youcanrecordtimeandexpense,approvetimeandtransfertoFI/CO
W.R.T.salesOrder.ForDIENmaterialtypeusedforscenariosliketime&material(whichmainly
usedforresourcerelatedbilling),milestonebillingwhereyouhavedifferentsalesorder
documenttype.
