1. Introduction.ThenewDigitalMicroforce2buildsuponthesamerobustforcesensortechnology
whichmadetheMicroForceanindustrystandard.TheDigitalMicroforce2featuresautomaticlens
calibration,electroniclimitsetting,andabrightLEDbargraphdisplayofzoomposition.Thislatest
versionaddsprogrammablesoftstopsandanewspeedcontrolknobwithadigitalreadout.
Theruggedhousing,machinedfromsolidaluminumalloy,protectsthecontrolfrommechanical
abuseandassuresyearsofreliableoperation.Itsergonomicdesignprovidesaroundedgripfor
comfortablealldayuseandalsooffersaconvenientattachmentpointforitsmatingPanArm
adapter.Thenewspeedcontrolknobisvirtuallyindestructible.Itturnswithglassysmoothnessthat
reflectsonthecarefuldesignusedthroughout.
TheunitcandrivetheDM1X,DM2orDM4digitalmotors.Itspowerfuldrivecapabilityassures
troublefreeoperationwitheventhelargestzoomlenses.Motorconnectionismadeviaaseriesof
molded"Y"cables.ThesecablesareavailableforbothfilmandvideocamerasandallowtheDigital
Microforce2toremotelycontrolthecamerarun/stoporVTRfunctionsrespectively.
TheDigitalMicroforce2alsosuppliestheanalogcommandsignalforcontrollingthezoomchannel
oftheFI+Zsystem,theinternalservosofvideolenses,ortheRadioMicroForcewirelessmodule.
2. PowerConnections.TheMicroForcemaybepoweredusingthefollowingtypesofcables:
a. "Y"Cables:(productseries1200)forspecificfilmandvideocameras.MicroForcepoweris
drawndirectlyfromtheaccessorysocketonthecamera.
b. VideoCablesforCanonandFujinon.Powerisdrawnfromthe12or20pinHiroseconnector
onthelens.
c. Zoomcables(4545,4445)forusewiththeFI+Zsystem.
d. Auxiliarypowercables(productseries11281130)maybeusedinconjunctionwith"Y"
cablestopowerthecontroldirectlyfromabattery.
3. Powerrequirements.TheMicroForceoperatesoveravoltagerangeof1130VDC(max).Idle
currentis55mAat24VDCor95mAat12VDC.Themaximumcurrentdrawnunderstalledmotor
conditionsis1.2A@24V(typ.)or2.4Aat12V.Theactualcurrentrequirementisproportionaltothe
operatingtorqueandthecurrentlimitsetonthecircuitboard.
4. OperatingProcedures.CAUTION.Themotorwillstartrotationassoonaspowerisappliedtothe
unit.Makesureyourhandisclearofthemovinggear!
a. AttachtheDM1,DM1X,DM2,orDM4Xmotortothematteboxsupportrodsusinga
19mmmotorswingarm(productseries4300)withastepdownbushingfor15mmor.625"
rodsifrequired.Makecertainthattherodsaresecuredagainstrotation.UsetheArrior
PanavisionBridge(4304,4311)toprevent15mmor.625"rodsfromtwisting.
b. Positionthemotorsothatitsgearteethareengagedwiththecorrespondingteethonthe
zoomringofthelens.Auxiliarygears(productseries4231,4240,4241)areavailableto
enablethemotortodriveeitherPanavision48DPgearingor.50m/.60mgearsforCanon
andFujinonvideolenses.
c. Checkthatthegearsaremeshedjusttightlyenoughtoeliminateanyplaybutnotsotightly
astocausethegearstojam.
d. ConnecttheMicroforce2toitspowersource.ThegreenLEDpowerindicatorshouldbe
illuminated.
e. Themotorwillcalibratebyfindingthemechanicalendstopsofthelens.Duringthisphase
themotorcurrentislimitedtoalowvaluesoasnottoapplyexcessiveforcetothelens.The
bargraphindicationwillremaindarkuntilthisoperationiscompleted.
f. Afterfindingtheendstopsofthelens,themotorstopsandthebargraphindicatorwilllight
indicatingthepositionofthezoomsetting.
g. Thezoomspeedanddirectioncannowbecontrolledbyapplyingpressureonthered
joystickbutton.
5. ControlFunctions.
a. TheMaximumspeed/ZoomSensitivitycontrolislocatedatthebottomofthecontrol.The
adjustmentrangeis8turnsoftheZoomSensitivityknobwithacorrespondingrangeofthe
digitaldisplayfrom099.
b. Thezoomspeedanddirectioniscontrolledbyapplyingfingerpressuretotheredjoystick
knobeithertowardsthetoporbottomofthecontrol.
b. TheDirectionswitchreversesthemotorrotation.
c. TheCameraRunswitchhas3positions;centerOff,ToggleOn(awayfromthejoystick)and
MomentaryOntowardsthejoystick).TheToggleOnpositionisforcamerasrequiringa
continuoussignaltorun(i.e.Arri12V,Panavision,Aaton),whiletheMomentaryOnisfor
camerasrequiringashortpulsetochangefromruntostop(i.e.Arri24V,Moviecam,Sony,
REDdigital).
d. TheZapswitchsetsthecontroltomaximumspeed.Pressingthismomentaryswitchallows
thelenstobereturnedquicklytopositiondespitealowmaximumspeedsetting.
e. TheSetbuttonisusedtosetlimitstothezoomrange.Tosetlimits,positionthelenstothe
firstlimitusingthejoystick.WhiledepressingtheSetbutton,pressonthejoysticktomove
thelenstotheotherdesiredlimit.Releasethebutton.Nowthelenswillstopattheselimits.
Usethebargraphdisplaytofeatherthemoveasthelimitisapproached.TheResetbutton
erasesthelimits.
f. TheLensCalbuttoninitiatesthecalibrationprocedure.
g. Thesoftstopfunctionautomaticallyslowsthezoommotorasitapproachestheendstops.
ThepointwheredecelerationbeginsisprogrammedbypressingtheSoftStopswitch(fig.3
below)andsettingthedecelerationdistancebypressingthejoystickupordown.Thelit
areaofthebargraphshowstherelativedistanceoverwhichdecelerationtakesplace.
ReleasetheSoftStopswitchtoresumenormalbargraphdisplayoperation.

1. Powersupplyoperation.ThedigitalMicroForcehasfourswitchingpowersupplies;controlled
byIC'sU12,U13,U14andU20.AllfoursuppliesareactivewhentheMicroForceisdrivinga
digitalmotor.Theygenerate+23.5V,+9V,+5Vand+3.3V/3.3Vrespectively.U12actsasa
voltageboosterinthatitsoutputvoltageis23.5Vforinputvoltageslessthan22V,anditsoutput
voltagetrackstheinputvoltageforvoltagesgreaterthan22V.
WhenthecontrolisusedintheAnalogmodeforgeneratingaZoomcommandsignaltocontrol
theFI+Zzoomchanneloroperatetheinternalservoofavideolens,the+5Vand+23.5V
suppliesareturnedofftominimizecurrentconsumption.
2. Totestthepowersupplies,powertheunitwitha12V2Asource.PTC1isa1.6Athermalfuse
whichprotectstheunitfromcatastrophicdamage.ItislocatednexttotestpointTP2.Ifitishot
tothetouchthereisashortcircuitordamagedcomponent.Thisfaultmustberemediedbefore
proceedingfurther.
ThetablebelowliststhevoltagesgeneratedonthecircuitboardbytheassociatedICs.All
voltagesaremeasuredrelativetothegroundpin(seefigure3).ICsortestpointslocatedonthe
bottomsideofthecircuitboardaredesignatedwithanasterisk*.

passivecomponent(capacitor,inductor,ordiode),oranimproperload.Itisstronglythatthe
factoryservicedepartmentoradesignatedPCSservicerepresentativeperformboardlevel
repairs.
3. NullAdjustments.Thefollowingproceduresareusedtoeliminatemotorcreepingwhen
operatingpressureisnotappliedtothejoystick.Theprocedurehasthreeparts:nulladjustment
forjoystickoffset,digitalmotoroffset,andanalogmodeoffset.Thenulladjustmentforthe
joystickmustalwaysbeperformedfirst.
Adigitalvoltmeterwith0.1mVresolutionisrequired.Usesmall"grabberhooks"tomake
contactwiththetestpins.
a. Removethe4screwssecuringthecoveroftheunit.Applypowerusingeithera"Y"
cableforconnectiontoadigitalmotor,acableforconnectiontoaFIZsystem,oracable
foravideolens.
b. Securetheunitatatypicaloperatingangle(30to45typical).
c. Turnthemaximumspeedcontrolclockwiseto"99".
d. Withnothingcontactingtheredjoystickknob,measurethevoltagebetweentestpoints
3and4.AdjustVR2tomakethereadinglessthan0.20mV.Thiscompletesthejoystick
offsetadjustment.
e. Checkforjoystickhysteresisbymomentarilyapplyingpressuretotheredknobinone
directionandthenreleasing.Afterallowing1020sforthemeterreadingtostabilize,
thereadingshouldreturntolessthan1mV.Repeatthisbutwithpressureappliedinthe
oppositedirection.Againconfirmthatthereadingislessthan1mV.Excessivehysterisis
canbecausedbythejoystickreceivingalargemechanicalshock.
f. Thenextstepsisforadjustingthedigitalmotoroffset.Usea"Y"motorcabletopower
thecontrol,butdontconnectamotor.
g. Placethecontrolonaflatsurface.Makesurenothingiscontactingtheredjoystick
knob.PressandholdsimultaneouslybuttonsSetandResetfor35secondsandthen
release.Thiswillautomaticallydeterminethevalueforthedigitalmotoroffsetand
storeitintomemory.
h. Thelaststepisforadjustmentoftheanalogmodeoffset.Connectthecontroltoa
VideolensortheFIZunitusinganappropriatecable.Besurethatthesensitivitycontrol
issettominimum(0")asbefore.Findpins7and8ofconnectorJ1onthecircuitboard
(thebrownandbrown/whitestripedwires).Seefig.3.

Usefineprobetipsonthevoltmeterprobestomeasurethevoltagedifferencebetween
pins7and8.AdjustVR3untilthevoltagedifferenceislessthan0.10mV.Thiscompletes
theanalogmodeoffsetadjustment.
VR4isusedtonulloutjoystickasymmetry.Itssettingshouldnotbealteredunlessthe
joystickisreplaced.
v.CurrentLimitadjustment.ThecurrentlimitadjustmentpotVR1determinesthemaximummotor
torquebothduringcalibrationandnormaloperation.Theoperatingtorqueisapproximately40%
higherthanthecalibrationtorque.
Thestallcurrentthroughthemotorisfactorysetto0.90A.TurningVR1anticlockwiseincreasesthe
maximummotortorque;eachfullturnofVR1roughlycorrespondstoa10%change.
