Union Minister of Commerce and Industry Anand Sharma

on Wednesday said the National Institute of Design (NID)
has been declared as a Centre of Excellence,but regretted
that a Bill in this regard could not be passed in the
Parliament because the Opposition hindered its smooth
functioning.
The Bill is expected to be passed in the next session of
Parliament,Sharma said after laying the foundation of NID
at Umri village in Kurukshetra district,which would be the
country
s second after the NID in Ahmedabad.
While speaking on the occasion,Sharma said:
Japan will
provide technology assistance to bring Kurukshetra NID to
the international map. Haryana has now become the first

state in the northern region and second in the country to

have such an institute.
The first NID was set up at Ahmedabad in Gujarat in 1961.
The NID at Kurukshetra will be set up over an area of about
20 acres with an investment of Rs 160 crore. Haryana
government has provided land for the NID free of cost.
Different disciplines of design would be offered in the
institute and it would provide world class design education
and training to professionals in the field of
animation,film,exhibition,graphics,product,ceramic and
glass,lifestyle and furniture and interior design.
The concerned departments have been directed to

complete all relevant formalities so that this institute could

be set up in a record time. Besides the NID in
Kurukshetra,Japan has also assured collaboration and
investment in the main industrial townships of ManesarBawal being developed under the Delhi-Mumbai Corridor,
Sharma said,adding that a National Institute of Fashion
Technology (NIFT) will soon be set up in Panchkula.
It was due to the persistent efforts of the chief minister that

the only NID of northern region has been sanctioned in

Haryana,
the minister further said.
Speaking on the occasion,Haryana Chief Minister
Bhupinder Singh Hooda said that the NID in Kurukshetra
will be the only such institute of northern India.
The campus will provide education to 500 undergraduate

and postgraduate students with a teaching faculty of about

100 and supporting technical staff of 150 people. Also,a

During the past about eight years,inclusive development of
all areas and welfare of every section of the society has
been ensured,he said.
Separate policies have been
prepared for the welfare of every section be it
farmer,poor,labourer,scheduled castes,backward classes
and imparting qualitative education to the children,Hooda
said,adding that in the coming four to five years,Haryana
would become an educational hub of international level.

Chautala
Haryana Chief Minister Bhupinder Singh Hooda on
Wednesday wished for the early recovery and good health
of INLD president Om Prakash Chautala.
