Whatdoesitmeantolistencinematically?Thequestionrunsthroughmanyofthefoundational
textsonmusicandthemovingimage(fromGorbmansUnheardMelodiestoChionsAudio
Vision,CooksAnalysingMusicalMultimedia,andKassabiansHearingFilm)andhasbecome
increasinglytopicalwithinthecontextofarenewedscholarlyinterestinfilmaudiences,the
sensory,andmediation.YetthenatureofcinematiclisteningatermfirstcoinedbyMichael
Longinhis2008monographBeautifulMonstersremainsdifficulttograsp,duetotheintrinsic
complexityoflisteningasanobjectofstudy,andtheheterogeneityofcinemaasacultural
form.
Takingtheseproblemsastopics,andhopingtobuildtowardsabetterunderstandingof
cinemascontributiontobroaderculturesoflistening,thisconferenceaimstoexploretwo
complementaryperspectivesonitsfundamentalresearchquestion:
Insidethecinema
Wewelcomecontributionsthatexplorefurtherwhatlisteningcinematicallymightamountto
inrelationtospecifictexts,exhibitionsites,andproductionandexhibitiontechnologiesinthe
historyofcinema.Dodifferentfilmsrequireustolistendifferently?Inwhatwaysandtowhat
extentcanafilmconfigureitsownauralreception?Howhavefilmmakersatdifferentpointsin
timeusedsoundtoactivatethespaceofcinematheatres?Doesanewcinemaofthesenses
