SAFETY CONSIDERATIONS
GENERAL
This manual contains information, cautions, and warnings which must be followed by the service person
to ensure safe operation and to retain the equipment in a safe condition.
SAFETY WARNINGS
BEFORE SWITCHING ON THE EQUIPMENT, its protective earth terminals must be connected to the
protective conductor of the (mains) power cord or the station earth. The mains plug shall only be inserted
in a socket outlet provided with a protective earth contact. The protective action must not be negated by
the use of an extension cord (power cable) without a protective conductor (grounding).
Make sure that only fuses with the required rated current and of the specified type (normal blow, time
delay, etc.) are used for replacement. The use of repaired fuses and the short-circuiting of fuse holders
must be avoided.
Whenever it is likely that the protection offered by fuses has been impaired, the equipment must be
made inoperative and be secured against any unintended operation.
GROUNDING
Any interruption of the protective (grounding) conductor (inside the equipment) or disconnecting the
protective earth terminal is likely to make this equipment dangerous. Intentional interruption is prohibited.
HIGH VOLTAGE
Warning - These servicing instructions are for use by qualified personnel only. To avoid dangerous
electric shock, do not perform any servicing other that that contained in the operating instructions unless
you are qualified to do so.
CAUTIONS
LINE VOLTAGE CONTROL
BEFORE CONNECTING THE POWER LINES ON THE EQUIPMENT, make sure the power sources are
compatible with the power inputs of the equipment. Verify that the correct fuses are installed.
GROUNDING
BEFORE SWITCHING ON THIS EQUIPMENT, ensure that all devices connected to it are connected to
its protective (earth) ground. (Grounding one conductor of a two-conductor outlet is not sufficient.)

ESD CONSIDERATIONS
Although no dangerous voltages are present within the unit, it is always good
practice to exercise extreme care when handling electronics equipment. The
following warnings and cautions must therefore be observed to avoid serious
damage to equipment.
GENERAL
Exercise caution when working with or around electrical/electronics equipment.
Dangerous voltages can cause serious injury.
Exercise extreme care when handling any electronics equipment as it contains
precision parts that can be damaged by improper handling.
CAUTION
Disconnect the unit from its power supply source before cleaning, inspecting or
disassembling.
Avoid touching connector pin surfaces. Foreign matter deposited on contact
surfaces can cause corrosion, and eventually lead to degradation of
performance. In addition, do not use abrasives to clean contact/pin surfaces.
Each module contains semiconductor devices which can be damaged by
electrostatic discharges.
It is advisable to take anti-static precautions when handling electronic boards or
static sensitive components.

1.
Introduction
This manual provides basic and detailed technical information for the correct operation
of the OSA 5533C SDU.
It describes the hardware itself, summarises the overall equipment concept and theory
of operation and provides information related to operation and maintenance.
1.1.
Documentation Structure
The manual is divided into two main parts:
- OPERATING (this portion)
- TECHNICAL (located at the end of this manual)
Optional expansion/upgrades
In order to minimise documentation changes, the drawings contained in this
manual show the equipments full configuration. Therefore, when module
upgrades are made at a later date, the user will already have all the necessary
documentation.
1.3.
Addendum
Always check if there is an addendum at the beginning of the manuals and read
it before proceeding with the main part of the manual. The addendum will
highlight any departure of the hardware from the descriptive text or drawings and
give additional technical data which was not available when the original manual
was compiled.
1.4.
Certification
All modules are tested according to well-defined procedures. Appropriate testing
and inspection also takes place at the component, board, equipment and system
levels. Oscilloquartzs is certified to ISO 9001. Oscilloquartz is also certified by
the Swiss Office of Metrology as an accredited laboratory for time and
frequency. The company maintains in-house cesium standards that are
compared continuously to UTC. Before any equipment is released, it must satisfy
the relevant tests and inspection schedules. The equipment is then issued with a
"Certificate of Conformance" that guarantees its conformance with the relevant
performance criteria.

ITU-T rec. G.781 describes three SSM sets for lower bitrate traffic carrying signals in the
SDH, SONET and Japan. Oscilloquartz have based the implementation of the SSM in the IIU
on the SSM set description for SDH and SONET networks in this recommendation, together
with a stability measurement of the incoming signal.
The current release of the OSA 5533C SDU does not allow SSM input selection if the two IIUs
provide SSM values belonging to the two different SSM sets.
2
In case of mismatching input / output signals (e.g. a T1 reference input signal and an E1
output signal, or vice versa) the SSM value DNU (Do Not Use) is generated on output signals.
3
An alarm can be caused be e.g. an input signal out of range from the expected quality level,
or by a faulty module.

BYPASS CONTROL
Figure 1: Working mode of the Re-Timing Unit in the OSA 5533C SDU.
A re-timing channel re-times a transport signal to the timing of the current
synchronisation output signal. Each channel has a re-timing buffer holding two
frames. If the re-timing buffer overflows or underflows, controlled slips are
applied to the transport signal.
Slips caused in the internal buffer can be monitored in a customer configured
manner on the OSA 5533C SDU via the "Local Manager for 5533C" software.
Important: For maximum security, if the RTU card i removed, or has an alarm
condition, or the equipment loses power, the signals are passed through to
ensure that traffic is not lost. This is ensured by the by-pass relays in the RTU
connector tile set.

2.2.2.5. Monitoring & Alarms Controller (MAC), Remote Management Unit (RMU) or
Local Management Unit (LMU)
This module (MAC release 1.0, RMU/LMU release 2.0) concentrates the
alarms from all modules within the OSA 5533C SDU. It provides front panel LED
indications, relay contacts alarm outputs for in-station monitoring, and an RS232C interface for external control using a Personal Computer (PC) running the
proprietary "Local Manager for 5533C" Oscilloquartz Software.
Additionally, the RMU allows to handle alarm management and configuration of
the system through a wide area network (Ethernet). The MAC/LMU dont have
this capability.
Failure or removal of the module only removes the monitoring functions provided
by the module itself. All other modules will continue to operate autonomously
4
providing the full protection switching capability . In particular, the performances
of the synchronisation outputs will not be affected i.e. all the selected
synchronisation outputs will still be active, with the same quality as before.
2.2.2.6. Power Supply Units (PSU)
The Power Supply Units (PSU) 1 & 2 operate in a 1+1 protected mode. Failure
or removal of a PSU has no effect on the synchronisation outputs of the
OSA 5533C.
NOTE: Since the selection of reference signal using SSM is based on software, the MAC is
essential, hence required, for decisions based on the SSM information provided from the IIU.

Function
Condition the external reference signals (up to 2) and
forward one of them (based on different criteria) to
HOU module for synchronisation purpose.
The heart of the equipment, this module (with internal
oscillator) is normally locked to the selected input
reference by means of a Digital PLL Filter and provide
highly stable outputs in holdover mode.
In case of failure or removal of the HOU, the Dummy
Relay Switch (DR) directs the signal coming from the
active IIU to the combiner-splitter feeding the Output
Interface Units. The DR is thus used to bypass the
failed HOU.
Provide the required user outputs and are driven by the
'HOU' module (or, in case of failure or removal of the
'HOU', directly from the active IIU through 'DR') .
Centralises all the alarms produced by the other
modules in the chassis.
Convert the voltage of the external power supply to the
internal voltage. In order to ensure the required
reliability, the two PSU work in a redundant fashion
(primary and secondary).

2.6.5. Hold Over Unit 'HOU' and Dummy Relay Switch 'DR'
(slots A3 and A4)
The 'HOU' (with its internal Oscillator) forms a digital phase-lock loop. The time
constant of the loop is programmable in the range of 10 to 1000 seconds
(800s default). When locked to an input reference signal, the 'HOU' regenerates
the selected input reference and attenuates jitter and wander on this reference.
When no valid input reference is available, the 'HOU' enter holdover mode and
holds its output frequency to the frequency that was available just before the loss
of the input.
In order to ensure the required reliability, in case of failure or removal of the
HOU, the Dummy Relay Switch (DR) directs the signal coming from the active
IIU to the Output Interface Units. The DR is thus used to bypass the failed HOU.

Check that the incoming reference signals match the input interface types
(shape, level, frequency, impedance)
Connect the input lines to the input connectors according to the wiring plan.
In the case where an input reference signal must be derived from a G.703-6
or a G703-2 traffic carrying signal, insert an OSA TEX-P Passive Timing
Extractor ( part no. 942.089.035) and connect it to the OSA 5533C SDU as
described in the TEX-P Operating Manual in the Technical part of this
manual.
Wait 30 seconds for the HOU to execute a complete initialisation cycle.

To configure the OSA 5533C SDU the following main parameters need to be set:
Priorities of the incoming reference signals
These parameters are stored in the MAC Module and processed by the IIUs
Modules. The priorities of the input references should be determined in accordance
with the users synchronisation network plan.
Servo loop time constant.
This parameter is stored and processed by the HOU Module.
Its target value depends on the characteristics of the incoming reference.
Alarm detection limits on fractional frequency offset (YINMAX).
This parameter is stored and processed by the HOU Module.
Its value determines the accepted quality range of the incoming reference. When out
of limits, the reference is automatically rejected by the HOU module (entering in
hold-over mode). The value depend solely on the quality of the reference signal and
must be chosen by the user. It is important to note that the limits should only be
programmed when the system's servo loop is locked.
Indeed, if one chooses a Yinmax of say 10-9 when the system is in hold-over mode
(loop not locked to the reference), the oscillator's ageing drift will reach this value
after a couple of days. If this is the case, a reference signal of good quality and
accurate frequency will be rejected, because the deviation Yoscillator - Yreference
will have exceeded the limit of 10-9.

Configuring procedure
For this purpose, one needs to connect (via the 'RS-232C' port on the connector
panel) an IBM-compatible PC loaded with the Local Manager for 5533C software
application.
Please refer to chapter 5.2. "Local Management Capabilities" for the procedure.

Remote Operations
The OSA 5533C SDU features the following remote control/monitoring capabilities:
Electrical alarms (Eight relay contacts).
Local management via a RS-232C port
Network Management via a dedicated Management port (Ethernet)
This function is only available when the equipment is equipped with an RMU
(5533C r2.0).

The Monitoring and Alarms Controller module (MAC/RMU/LMU in A9) centralises all
the alarms produced by the other modules in the equipment. It displays an alarm
summary on the front panel and also produces the relative electrical outputs for remote
alarm monitoring. These electrical alarms are issued from relay isolated contacts and
are available on the 'ALARM OUTPUTS' connector.
