Providingaccesstowritebackcacheisoneofthe
manybenefitsofahardwareRAIDcontrollercard.
Writebackcacheimprovesapplicationperformanceby
storingwritedatatohighperformancecachememory
duringperiodsofheavyuse.Whenthereisabreakin
userrequeststhedataisthenwrittenfromthecache
memorytothearray.
Duringnormalwritebackoperation,dataiswrittento
cache(DRAM),theIOisacknowledgedas"complete"
totheapplicationthatissuedthewrite,andlaterthe
writeisflushedtodisk.Ifpowerislostwhilewritebackcacheisenabled,thewritesinDRAMmaybelost.And
sincethecontrollerhasalreadyacknowledgedtheIOsascomplete,theapplicationisunawareofthedataloss.
Tominimizethisrisk,EnterpriseRAIDcontrollersequippedwithcachetypicallyofferabatterybackup(BBU)
option.Thepurposeofthebatteryistoprovidepowertothecontrollerintheeventthatthepowerfromthe
serverisinterrupted.Thisprotectsthedatainthecacheuntilpowertotheservercanberestoredandcache
datawrittentodisk.
Whilegenerallyeffective,BBUsmayrequiremaintenance,specialhandlingandprotectcachedataforalimited
time.CacheVaulttechnology,providingflashbasedcacheprotectionforLSIMegaRAID6Gb/sSATA+SASRAID
controllers,offersagreener,lowertotalcostcacheprotectionsolutionwithoutthedrawbacksofaBBU.
LSI6Gb/sMegaRAIDSATA+SAScontrollers,togetherwithCacheVaultflashtechnology,virtuallyeliminate
hardwaremaintenanceassociatedwithLithiumIONbatteries,lowertotalcostofownershipoverthelifeofthe
controllercard,andprovidemoreenvironmentallyfriendlycacheprotection,allwhilemaintainingoptimalRAID
performance.
CacheVaultTechnology
CacheVaulttechnologyprovidesRAIDcontrollercacheprotectionusingNANDflashmemoryanda
supercapacitor.Intheeventofapowerorserverfailure,CacheVaulttechnologyautomaticallytransferscached
datafromtheDRAMcachetoflash.Oncepowerisrestored,thedataintheNANDflashiscopiedbackintocache
untilitcanbeflushedtothediskdrives.ThistechnologyeliminatestheneedforLithiumIONbatterybackups
thataretraditionallyusedtoprotectcachememoryonPCIRAIDcontrollers.
GoGreenandSave
UsingNANDflasheliminatestheneedtodisposeoftheLithiumIONbatteriestypicallyfoundintoday'sBBUs.
Thesebatteriesareapotentialrisktotheenvironmentandmanycommunitiesrequirethattheybedisposedof
