between wholesaler and customer. they have gross transaction costs of 80 mm and 2 offices with

some options they may have to become profitable? for every additional $1 of revenue, the company has
$0.90 costs. how much must they raise revenue to break-even? is this a reasonable solution? why or why
not? 20 mm in sales related costs. 70% goes to vendor costs and 30% to salesperson travel expenses,
etc. current vendor costs 50% more than industry standard. how much would the company save going to
new vendor? current industry sales per salesperson is 33% higher than current salespeople. how much
could they save if they wanted to cut down number of salespeople with industry standard versions to
maintain 100 mm revenue? with the reduction in sales costs are they profitable? why or why not? what if
they close one of the offices to lower office expenses? how much must they now produce in revenue to
break-even? (use break even equation as we did earlier) finally manager comes to you and says we
want to make our profits to be 3% of our revenue, how can you make this happen? most questions

should we do that or not. abg balance is $2000. this offer will impact now, that only 10% customers will
pay in full and 10% will pay 60% offer.part(b)- since we are stealing our own customers by giving an offer,
what is the cannibalization rate? and what is the max. cannibalization rate that capital one can do to break
even?
86. Capital one asks that you not give away their specific case questions, and im going to respect that.
the standard interview is 2 behavioral interviews and 2 case interviews. the behavioral interviews are
pretty easy. the best way to prepare is to have a series of stories from your career (6 or 7) that you can
use to address the standard behavioral questions.the cases were harder for me to prepare for. i read a
mix of reviews saying they were really easy or really hard. the capone sample case (as of july 2012) was
ridiculously easy, but some of the case in point (a prep book for case interviews) were tricky.capone cases
are different than the management consulting cases (from case in point) in that they tend to focus much
more on math rather than on open-ended business thinking. both of the cases that i did were break-even
analysis, which means you just have to take the information youre given, compute profit, and then solve
for profit = 0 as they tweak the parameters. i was really nervous on the first one, but i blew the second
one away. they were, to me, very easy.the problem was that if you do well on the first 4 interviews you get
a 5th interview (its a 3rd case), and thats where i did poorly and didnt get the job offer. the problems
were that the svp they called in was kind of a jerk and that i was really tired after 4 interviews, lunch, and
then an hour of just sitting in a tiny room waiting for that last interview.i dont know if him being a jerk was
part of the test or not. everyone else had been very friendly and helpful, but he was much more abrasive.
he also took away my calculator. i had brought my own cause im comfortable with it and the first two
case interviewers didnt mind at all, but he all but literally took it out of my hands as though i was
intentionally cheating, and that really rattled me..

89. Case about credit cards where you had to take multiple percentages of percentages (note: much
harder than their online sample case!)
90. Case based on credit cards. mostly driven by probabilities and expected value.
91. Case details dont help. the difficult case required the ability to evaluate a business model, compare
two pricing structures, calculate multiple break-even points, draw a graph, and an understanding of how
different probability distributions could affect user behavior.
92. Case example: analyzing an affinity credit card (ex. special card only available to members of a
specific group)facts:1) average card balance is $10002) each card has a rate of 15%3) membership fee is
$20 per card4) loss rate is 3%5) $25 operating cost per card6) $10 affiliation fee per card (cost to the
group for access to members)7) 6.5% cost of fundsq1: how much profit is generated per card?a1:total
revenue = ($1000 * 15%) + $20 = $170total expense = (3% * 1000) + $25 + $10 + ($1000 * 6.5%) =
$130total profit = $40q2: the 3% loss rate can either mean either 3% of the outstanding balance defaults

or 3% of the borrowers default on their entire balance. if the average balance is increased to $2000, what
happens to the loss?a2: the loss doubles either way you calculate it.q3: is a borrower with a low balance
more or less likely to default then a borrower with a high balance?a3: less likely. borrowers tend to charge
up a balance before they default.q4: would the affilated group ever want to puchase the accounts from the
financial institution?a4: the most likely scenario is that they want to purchase the accounts in order to turn
around and sell them to another financial institution.q5: if the affilated group offered $20 per account to
purchase from the financial institution, what would thier profit be? (assume that we are only talking about
1 year)a5: current profit per account is $40 minus the cost of $20 per account to purchase and eliminate
the affiliation fee of $10 per account. profit after the purchase would be $30.q6: what could the financial
institution do to convince the affiliated group not to want to purchase?a6: increase the affiliation feeq7:
what is the most the financial institution would be willing to increase the affiliation fee to?a7: max profit is
the current level of $40 and minimum is the profit if sold to the affiliation at $20. $40 $20 = $20. they
could only increase the fee by $20 for new affiliation fee of $30.that is all i can recall from memory. there
wasnt a lot more. my advice is dont over-think
things.http://www.capitalone.com/careers/hiring/sample_step1.php?

558. Tell us about your previous job?
559. Tell us if subway should adopt the 5 dollar footlong policy.
560. That only one or two people really asked what i have been doing currently.
561. The 2nd behavior interview was surprising as i dint think interviewer was serious enough. looking at
my resume as someone of 10 yrs exp in it and asking them if they ever worked in a team or resolved an
issue.?
562. The behavioral interviews went something like: tell me about a time when your actions led to the
success of your team. or, tell me about a time when you disagreed with the consensus viewpoint of your
team. what did you do, and why?
563. The behavioral interviews werent too tough. as far as the case interview, they gave me one that had
to do with breakeven analysis.
564. The case interview itself.
565. The case interview which asked about credit card marketing & profit
566. The case interviewers are clearly not trained on communicating the questions clearly.
567. The case interviews were consulting firm-type interview questions. the first was about evaluating a
call centers effectiveness and profitability. the second was evaluating whether or not a certain screening
process (i think that it was employment verificiation or something) was cost effective in weeding out
delinquent potential customers. the third was about the profitability of an affinty card program.
568. The case involved simple credit card profitability concepts. i dont remember details.
569. The case involved whether a franchise should adopt a marketing promotion.

570. The case overall was unexpected. if i had practiced a little more, i think i would have done much
better.
571. The case questions are fairly straightforward computation questions. make sure you write down your
work clearly so that you can guide the interviewer through your process.
572. The case questions were very quantitative and not at all similar to ones used by consulting firms (or
in the case in point book)
573. The case required you to keep close track of units, making sure the numbers you use are by the
day/week/year or whatever.
574. The case study threw me off a bit and my interview (who is suppose to guide the study) was of no
help at all.
575. The case study was about online advertisements on a site like facebook versus e-mail and analyzing
the feedback from both. interested in the best value.
576. The case study was about taking 7,000 templates down to less than 10. then they asked for me to
reduce the amount of time it took to complete the project, and finally if i could bring 1 person onto a
project at any stage, where would i put that person and why.
577. The case study. be sure to find the answer on line and work it out before going in.
578. The case was a average difficulty process flow question
579. The case was about advertising through facebook or e-mail.
580. The case was about running a ferry company definitely harder than the case example on the
capital one interview.
581. The case: profitability of credit cards. not hard itself but stressful.
582. The cases were difficult if i wouldnt have practiced, practice gave me confidence to ask the right
questions, make sure you follow the instructions your recruiter gives you while you solve, you need to be
interactive and prepare well,i did some calculation mistakes but the interviewers helped me correct
that, the idea is to see how well you handle under pressure.
583. The cases were easy at the beginning, but got complicated as the interviewer asked me more
questions and give me more data.
584. The cases were more complex in person than the phone interview. the behavior interview was quite
standard, and they prepare you quite well.
585. The cases were quantitative and nothing like management consulting cases. one really tripped me
up had nothing to do with anything you ever learn in business school.
586. The data analysis interview.
587. The first case was about if you were the ceo of a shipping company and how you would deal with
competition and about your costs, revenue, etc.
588. The first person who i interviewed with was so uncomfortable. he was like he wanted to leave the
room asap. he didnt speak before the case question and was not clear about the question.
589. The fit interviews were typical walk me through your resume. or, why do you want to work here?
590. The followup questions after you answer the initial case question. the initial question is easy and are
supposed to get after a few calculations.
591. The hiring manager asked me about something about mortgage payment. i didnt answer right and
he explained the answer.
592. The interview was a big math question.
593. The interviewer has very specific answer that he is looking into. as a result, he is very pushing to the
direction that he would like to hear from.
594. The most difficult aspect is having at least six different concise and well rehearsed examples ready
for answering all of the behavioral questions.
595. The most difficult question asked was a case that involved many different credit card rates. each new
part of the problem introduced changed all of the previous steps so it was difficult to keep track of.
596. The most difficult question i got involved a two-variable algebraic equation.

597. The most difficult question was during the behavioral portion when they asked. when was a time you
convinced someone to change their mind on an important event in their life.
598. The most difficult questions were problems based on interpreting graphs or charts. usually these
types of problems provide too much information and it becomes crucial to be able to find the data needed
to solve the problem under a short time limit.
599. The phone screening is logical and fair, no particularly difficult or unusual questions.
600. The practice question they have online wasnt hard, but the one in the interview was not easy. there
are many variables to consider and they dont walk you through it.
601. The role play was expected, but was still a little stressful.
602. The second case interview was about credit card process. the process involves getting information
about the applicant, performing a credit check and if he passes it, then approval is given for the credit
card. without the absence of the credit checking process, 5% of the people would applied would be
denied the card. however, because of the credit check process, debt write-off is reduced by 10%. there is
a definite cost associated with the credit check process (do not remember how much). should the credit
check process be scratched?
603. The tell me about a time questions.
604. The time quant test. need to use mathematical calculations along with logical rationalization. there is
not enough time to complete.
605. The verbal test was probably the most difficult part.
606. The word problem.
607. There are some open questions like, before doing the analysis, what factors do you think would
influence the profit?
608. There is a ferry which takes people across a lake. it takes 5 mins for a one-way trip and the
turnaround time is 5 mins. each passenger is charged 5$. how do you improve the business?
609. There was a 30 minute case interview which was very easy if you are an analytical type. the case
goes, you are a franchise owner of a subway shop. your shop is offered to either join the 5 dollar foot long
promotion or remain as usual. you are then asked to decide whether to join the promotion or decline.
610. There was a behavioral interview and some data modeling questions that they had me answer on a
white board.
611. There was a role play involved. i was nervous and this part was unexpected, it threw me through a
loop a bit but i think i bounced back from it.
612. There was not one particular question its the overall feel of the interview process. one must
remember that capital one and their employees have what some people would think of as arrogance in
their approach to meeting new people. there is an air of suspicion and superiority that you must be able to
rise above and not let it intimidate you. capital one is no better or worse than any other company in the
banking/credit card world in terms of their people skills, and ive worked for several of those
companies.one thing that no one can overcome at capital one is their age or race. although capital one
does have older workers, the vast majority of capital one employees are very young, i.e average age is
probably somewhere around 35 years old and/or just minted college graduates. if you happen to be
indian, or a foreigner in general, thats even better!! if you are just graduating college and get a job at
capital one, you will be treated like royalty and be given the best opportunities at succeeding in the
company. when i first started i was a bit envious of the training opportunities and red carpet treatment
that newly minted college grads received compared to their average, middle aged co-workers. ive never
felt so old in all my life!!
613. There was pretty much no technical questions
614. There were a lot of typical behavioral questions, such as tell me about the most innovative idea
youve ever had and successfully worked through.
615. There were a number of case studies, all of them relating mathematical equations/charts/solutions

with physical meaning. they were fairly straightforward.

616. There were lots of technical questions during the telephone interview not common in my area.
617. They asked me to design an online test processing application, what technologies would i use and
why?
618. They did a case study about a call center of capital one with the data of avg talk time, abandon
rate , and volume and told me to get the avg talk time for the whole week. . froze up for a couple
minutes than employer gave me a few hints on what to do
619. They gave me a question about airline telephones. they wanted me to evaluate the economics of
buying out a company that provides telephone service that can be used on airplanes. the parameters
were taken from the airline telephone industry back in the 90s when that industry was beginning to fail
because of the growth spurt of cell phones.
620. They hired me as a temp to perm contractor, so the interview process was easy, since they already
new my performance. so, no real questions
621. They sent me a rejection email but i never got it. i followed up with the recruiter and she was like. oh
i sent you a rejection email. you never go it?
622. They structure their case interviews to be like having a conversation with the person. there was no
specific hard question
623. They will send you a list of business math topics beforehand. if you want the job, you should spend a
lot of time studying these topics.
624. Things like tell me about your banking experience
625. Think of ways to increase profit by decreasing credit limit.
626. This is kind of my point. by writing out longhand answers to 40-50 example bi questions i found
online, i had enough solid material to adapt to any question anyone could ask, so i was not thrown off by
any questions in the actual interview.
627. Three credit cards with different interest rates
628. Time when you had to influence a groups decision.
629. Time you had to complete many things at once.
630. Time you worked with someone you didnt get along with.
631. Took 3 days to prepared for the behavioral interview questions. so nothing unexpected.
632. Total disconnect from phone to face to face. hiring vp was come today, right now, very friendly like
best buds join me now, and when i met him face to face. read belowtotal, series of 5 interviews back to
back onsite with 3 peers one subordinate and one hiring manger, they kept changing the itenarary. hiring
vp was yawning, seemed bored after 2 seconds, they already had filled the position before hand
seemed..saw the other applicant in room accross from me. i didnt mind that they interviewed other
candidates thats normal. liked that the recruiter wrote a personal thank you card letter for interviewing
with them.
633. Try to know as many business equations as possible to show off your math skills during the case. if
you dont know an equation, not the end of the world but you have to ask for it.
634. Trying to digest in numbers they give you quickly into a formulated answer an equation.
635. Typical behavioral question: tell me a time when you faced an unexpected challenge when working
on a project and how you dealt with it.
636. University credit card should university buy it out from capital one or how can capital one keep
university from buying out the card (from the case interview).
637. Use a weighted average.
638. Use an example to illustrate your ability to influence others
639. Verbal reasoning questions were difficult, tricky questions. had to read through them each several
times and ran short on time at the end of the test.
640. Very basic questions that are rather reviews about your resume. the roll play was much easier to
pass than other industries. i overwhelmed them, but i was over qualified. bad for me as the position was

frustrating because of thatfor me.
