Test 2nd of ESO SPORTS

Introduction

Ive decided to design a test based on my learning unit which is focused on the topic of sports
and it contains the future tenses and a formal letter. Therefore, the exercises of vocabulary are
about the collocations used in sport and the letter must be written using future tenses. The
test as well as the learning unit is addressed to the students of 2nd of ESO, and it is divided into
4 parts: vocabulary and grammar (20%), reading (20%), listening (20%) and the writing (40%).
The test is valid because it tests different skills (listening, reading and writing) and there are
also a part of grammar and vocabulary to help the student to refresh their ideas for the
writing. This last part is the one that counts the most and it is a good measure of the writing
ability. All the previous parts (vocabulary, grammar, listening and writing) may be scaffolding
for students to have ideas for the written part which is the most important. The students will
be provided the rubric one or two days before the exam so that they will know how they will
be graded.
This test is also reliable because it is easy to mark, the way every part is graded is specified
above each exercise (1 point or 5 points are given to each sentence or question depending on
the exercise). As for the writing, it counts 40 points and it is easy to grade following the rubric
(multiply by 2 the number obtained from the rubric, finally you will get the proportional
number).
This test is practical because it is intended to be complete in 50 minutes. The estimated time
for taking this exam is one session, the exercises are very short and students will have
practiced those kinds of exercises in class (with the learning unit). Nevertheless, students are
not thought for taking the exam but for providing a formal letter, giving an oral presentation
and performing an interview, each task is related to sports. But here in this exam we only can
check whether they are able to write a formal letter and their written and oral comprehension,
since there isnt enough time. The expected time for writing is 15-20 minutes, it is based on
previous exercises and also on their groups oral presentation, it is not something they have to
create from the beginning, the components of the different groups will write a similar letter,
with some personal variations. The listening is very short 2:56 minutes; students will listen to it
twice so the estimated time for this activity is 8 minutes. As for the reading it has been
adapted and for that reason the answers are very easy to be found, the estimated time is 8
minutes, 4 minutes to understand the test and 4 minutes more to answer the questions.
As for the vocabulary and grammar part, students will do it very quickly as well perhaps they
will need more time to complete the email because the verbs depend on the context, but the
rest is almost automatically.
Answer keys and bibliography are provided at the end.
