previouspublicstatementsoffinancialmismanagementandfinancialrecordkeepingproblemsunderBenavente'swatch.
Someofthearchbishop'sstatementswere"absolutelywrong,"Benaventewrote.
AgroupofGuamfinancialexpertsalsoheldapressconferencethismorning,sayingthearchbishop'sstatementsweren't
factual.
OnApuron'spublicstatementthattheCatholicCemeteriesofGuamusedlandthatwasnotunderitsname,butwas
insteadundertheArchdioceseofAgana,ascollateralforaloan,Benaventewrote:
"RegardingtherecordingofthelandattheCatholicCemeteriesasanasset,theDeloitte&Touche(letter)acknowledges
thiscorrectionintheirletterofJan.8,2014.ItshouldbenotedthatbeforetheDeloitteaudit,theonlypersonswhocould
havehaveknownthatthelandwasalsorecordedontheArchdiocesebookswasyou,asarchbishop,andDeacon
DominicKim.Additionally,yourletterisabsolutelywronginstatingthatthepropertywasusedtosecurealoan....This
clarificationwaspointedouttoDeaconKimin2012,andacopyofthatletterwasalsogiventoyou."

documentscouldn'tbefound,Benaventewrote:
"TheinitialfinancialstatementoftheCatholicCemeteriesdidincludeaduplicationofbuildingassetsbutthisitemwas
correctedveryearlyoninthereviewprocess.EventheDeloitte&ToucheletterdatedJan.8,2014acknowledgesthis
correction.YourletterofJuly31,2014tothemediainaccuratelystatesthataftersevenmonthstheconstruction
documentsfor(CatholicCemeteriesprojects)haveyettobeproduced.Copiesoftheactualconstructiondocumentswere
submittedtoyourfinanceofficer,DominicKim,whorequestedthem."

Cemeteriesdirectormorethanaweekago,statingthattheCathedralBasilicaandtheCatholicCemeterieshadbeen
poorlymanaged.
Financialexpertswhowereprivytothearchdiocesanfinancesheldtoday'spressconferenceonthefrontstepsofthe
DulceNombreDeMariaCathedralBasilicatostatethatthearchbishop'spublicstatementsdidn'tmatchwithfacts.
