Abstract-The authorpoints out that the developmentof lithographictechnology
falls into threeperiods: (1) 1800 to 1820-European artists learnedthe characteristics of the medium,with little thoughtto creating a popular or democraticart,
a good methodofpreparingand inkingstones wasfoundby Senefelderin Bavaria,
and at the end of the period his method was introducedto America; (2) 1820 to
1855-artists and businessmentried to use lithographyto reach all the people,
Americans followed the European lead but presses were too slow for large
productionof prints and (3) 1855 to 1890-Americans successfully applied their
inventiveabilities to the developmentof steam-operatedautomaticpresses but
lithography became a mediumfor American business and 'artistic' emphasis
vanished.
Throughoutall three periods the debt of America to Europe was immense,
for the lithographic craft was essentially developed in Germany, France and
England. 'Artistic' and popular prints produced by American lithographic
companies in the nineteenth century seem native to America and it is often
difficult to see them as products of Europeantechnology.

modesty. Basically, this press resembledothers of its day,
with only a few modifications.

whole unit was called, was attached to a solid rod
which was threaded at one end. The rod screwed
into the top of the arch on the press and it could be
adjusted to accommodate all thicknesses of stones.
The scraper-blade traveled in channels or 'trains'
affixed to the inner surface of the columns of the
arch. The length of these trains depended upon the
distance covered by the scraper.
On top of the arch, just above this screw, was a
lever with an eccentric at one end. When pushed
to the 'down' position the eccentric applied additional pressureto the scraperagainst the stone.
Donlevy did not patent either the tympan design
or the scraper-blade mechanism. Rather, he
emphasized that they were drawn in 'the manner
ordinarily employed in lithographic presses for
which I make no claim'.
Various features of this press had been established
in Europe. Metal construction typified English
presses as early as the mid-1820's but France and
Germany retained their wooden models until the
late 1830's. The leather tympan and wooden scraperblade had been used by Senefelder at an early date
and movable carriages with stationary scrapers
became common throughout Europe in the 1820's.
