Learning area: Acids and bases Learning objective: Synthesising the concepts of strong acids, weak acids, strong alkalis and weak alkalis Learning outcomes: At the end of the lesson, students are able to: 1. state the use of a pH scale 2. relate pH value with acidic of alkaline properties of a substance 3. relate concentration of hydrogen ions and hydroxide ions with pH value 4. relate strong or weak acid and strong or weak alkali with degree of dissociation 5. conceptualise qualitatively strong acids, weak acids, strong alkalis and weak alkalis Approach: Contextual learning Suggested learning activities: i. Carry out an activity using pH scale to measure the pH of solutions used in daily life ii. Carry out an activity to measure the pH value of a few solutions with the same concentration. For example, hydrochloric acid, ethanoic acid, ammonia and sodium hydroxides iii. Based on the data obtained from the above activity, discuss the relationship between: a. pH values and acidity or alkalinity of a substance b. concentration of hydrogen ions and hydroxide ions and the pH values c. strong acids, weak acid, strong alkalis, weak alkalis and their degree of dissociation iv. Use computer simulation to show the degree of dissociation of strong and weak acids as well as strong and weak alkali v.
