1. Overview
The AVE digital publishing solution for Adobe InDesign allows you to enrich a printable document, or
to work from scratch on a brand new document designed specifically for devices such as the iPhone,
iPad, Android devices and for web publication.
The InDesign AVE digital publishing solution is composed of two main parts:
- A system that uses PHP and SQLite to conveniently store the InDesign documents as well as all the
media files and enrichments in one location.
- A client part that consists of two InDesign plugins:
- The AVE Project Manager allows you to manage all your projects and open them in InDesign
for editing. Standard operations let the users Create/Open/Duplicate/Remove/Export a
project.
- The AVE Interactivity palette allows you to enrich any feature of an opened InDesign
document. The enrichments features include Movies, Slide Shows, buttons and zoomable
pictures, among others.

3. Installation
To download the installation image disk, you need to register on avepublishing.com .
1. Double click on the installation disk image. The two elements on the left are the InDesign
extension installers. On the right there is the Digital Publishing System package and the
document you are reading actually.
2. Quit all Adobe applications and Double click on one of the extensions installers. It will
automatically open Adobe's Extension manager. Accept the End User License Agreement and
then the installation will start. Once finished, you have to do the same with the second
extension. The presence of AVE Interactivity and AVE Project Manager in InDesign's extensions
list confirms that the installation was successful.
GETTING STARTED
3. Double click on the AVE Digital Publishing System package to start the installation. An installer
will open and guide you trough the installation process. You will be asked to enter your system
administrator password. This step concludes the plugin installation for those who have not
used the plugin before. Those who have used the beta versions (0.9.*) of the plugin, should
read the following steps.
4. If you have created projects with the beta versions of the plugin, the system installer will
backup your projects automatically at the end of the installation. That is why "less than a
minute" may take more time depending on the size and the number of project you have.
GETTING STARTED
5. Once the installation is complete, start InDesign, open the Project Manager and the General
Parameters. Then click on the "Recover" button.
6. Check the projects that you want to recover and click on the recover button.
GETTING STARTED
7. A progress bar appears but it only shows that the Project manager is performing the recovery.
This can take several hours if your projects are big. So we advise you to start the recovery
before leaving the office and keep your computer working during the night. If you do that,
remember to turn off your computer's sleep before leaving.

4. First Launch
4.1. Guided tour of the AVE Project Manager
4.1.1. Open The AVE Project Manager tool palette
Go to Window menu, select Extensions > AVE Project Manager.
The left hand side of the window contains the Project List displaying all your saved projects.
The right hand side of the window shows the Project Structure of the selected project. Each
column in this view corresponds to a single InDesign file, and displays the page thumbnails. If
you change your selection in the project list, the Project Manager will retrieve all the project
details from the storage.
At the bottom of the window there is a toolbar with the commands that apply to a project.
They are as follows: create, import, export, duplicate, refresh, delete, project settings, publish,
send to myKiosk, retrieve Zave, zoom and display general settings.
First lets create a new project to see the basics of our digital publishing system.

button located under the project list. A popup dialog will appear:
Choose the type of project you want to create. We currently support two types:
AveMag: This is a project where you have no existing document. You will therefore
create the pages from scratch or use the templates provided within the application. The
current page size supported in this mode is 1024x768 pixels, which corresponds to an
iPad in landscape mode.
AvePDF: With this type of project you can import existing InDesign documents to build
the final document. It allows you to start from a printable project and to enrich it, in order
to transform the original document to a digital format.
In this first example we chose AvePDF to show you the basic interactions allowed by this type
of project.

4.2.2. Publish
Now its time to see the output on the iPad. To do that, you have to publish first by clicking
Publish
. The Project Manager will probably ask you to generate the articles imported. Click
Yes and wait for the end of the process. If there are images in your articles, Photoshop will
start automatically to process them.

Swipe horizontally to change pages. From right to left for the next page and from left to right
for the previous page. A single tap will display the toolbars. The lower toolbar contains a slider
allowing you to quickly navigate within the publication. Of course this feature is useful if there
are more than two pages. The other way to navigate is to use this button
the pages thumbnails. A double tap will zoom in where you tapped and another double tap
will zoom out.
To start enriching your AvePDF project see chapter 5.2.
