Concordia - MECH 6541 Joining Processes and Non destructive testing: 4 credits:
Professor Mr. Viwek Vaidya : viwek@sympatico.ca : cel 514 712 2801

MECH 6541 course will be taught by Viwek Vaidya, a practicing welding and non destructive testing
engineer.Viwek Vaidya provides consulting services to several clients. Working since 1971 in the
metal fabrication business, Viwek participated in the manufacture of the Nuclear reactors at Genitlly
and Lepreau, Hydro Quebec hydro electric dam gates for LG-2 10,000 MW, many Utility and
recovery boilers in Canada, New Zealand, Thailand, China and reactor components for Darlington
and Korean Nuclear systems. Viwek is the past Director of Technolgy and Senior Welding expert for
Air Liquide Canada Inc.Viwek is an active member of AWS, CWA, SME. Viwek is a member of
Chair, Strategic Steering Committee on Built environment for CSA, which oversees all Structural
Welding standards in Canada certified by the Canadian Welding Bureau.

MECH 6541 : This course will cover the principles of welding and inspection processes commonly
used in the manufacture of cars, bridges, ships, barges, trains, aeroplanes, industrial equipment,
office furniture, pacemakers etc. The course has two field trips to visualize welding applications
based on the theory taught in the class. You will learn practical engineering information of what can
go wrong with poor welding practices, how to detect good from the bad and what should you know,
as an Engineer for corrective actions.

Assignment 1 (Individual - 10 marks): Each student is required to submit pictures of a weld describing where it was
taken from, the weld and the welding process used. ( 5). Each student is to search the net for the Alexander Keilland
platform that capsized in 1980 and expain the reasons for the failure. (5) This submission of 4-5 pages is due on the
27th of January 2015. A hard copy is needed for evaluation.
Assignment 2 (Individual - 10 marks): Each student
will get a hard copy of the AWS welding Journal from the Professor. The student is required to study the contents of
the journal and pick any one item that he or she likes from the Journal, it can be the feature article, an
advertisement, a research item or anything else. Please copy the item in your submission for reference and present
a short 5 to 10 page summary as to why you selected it for your submission and what did you learn. (Cover 'what,
why, who, when, where'). A hard copy is need for evaluation. Assignment 2 is due February 17th 2015.
Assignment 3 ( Group - 20 marks): This is a group assignment
based on assignment 2. The students are required to form 5 groups from the class population. They will then work in
a team and choose one topic within each group. The groups are required to present the topic they have chosen in a
power point presentation to the class on the last day of the course. A written report and a CD of the presentation is
required for evaluation. The evaluation will be done on the presentation skills, the presentation quality and the
message it conveys to the audiance. In the beginning when each of the students of the group self introduce
themselves, they will cover one slide of the individual assignment in item 2 above and then the presentation. 20
