Part 2 of this Defence Standard is to be used for the validation of all Submarine First Level
castings made of Nickel Aluminium Bronze manufactured to Def Stan 02-747 Part 1, 2 or 4.
It is to be used to establish a baseline of data for any weld repairs, wall thickness
measurements and the integrity of the casting at manufacture.
3.
Part 3 of this Defence Standard is to be used for the revalidation of Submarine First Level
castings made of Nickel Aluminium Bronze manufactured to DGS 8520, DGS 348 or Def
Stan 02-747 Part 1, 2, or 4 which have had service use involving contact with sea water.
4.
Part 4 of this Defence Standard is to be used for in-service inspections carried out outside of

1.1
Critical Castings
a.
1.2
1.3
All NAB castings in First Level Quality Assured Systems which are normally in
contact with sea water i.e. those castings which directly affect submarine safety, are
designated CRITICAL CASTINGS. All castings in this category are to be identified
and listed in a NAB Register (see Section 2), and are to be manufactured in
accordance with Def Stan 02-747 Part 1, 2 or 4. Such castings are to be either Class I
or Class II castings. No Class III castings will fall into this category. The casting
classifications are defined in Def Stan 02-863.
All NAB castings listed in the NAB Register are to be Validated or Revalidated in
accordance with Part 2 or 3 of this Defence standard before installation. Orders and
contracts for new castings to Def Stan 02-747 Part 1, 2 or 4 for use in critical
positions must state that the castings are to be supplied validated in accordance with
Part 2 of this Defence standard.
b.
A number of "Higher Risk" NAB castings will be selected by WSA for examination
during Docking Periods (DP) as considered necessary. Inspections are to be carried
out to the requirements of Part 4 of this Defence Standard. Reports of examinations
are to be made to the Design Authority as early as possible to enable the results to be
assessed and necessary actions to be undertaken during the DP.
b.
At the LOP(R) all NAB castings listed in the NAB Register are to be either
revalidated in accordance with Part 3 of this Defence Standard, or replaced with
NAB castings validated in accordance with Part 2 of this Defence Standard or
Copper Nickel Chromium castings to Def Stan 02-824. Repair by welding will not
normally be allowed on revalidation (see Part 3 of this Defence Standard).
c.
Non-critical castings (those not listed in the NAB Register) are to be replaced only
when defective.
d.
e.
If at any time during the revalidation process, the LOP(R) Contractor believes a
casting which is not on the list detailed in Clause 1.3d is unsuitable for revalidation,
Design Authority endorsement is required before the casting is rejected.
NOTE: To ensure that the Design Authority is given sufficient time to answer individual
queries, it is essential that the Design Authority receives information on castings as early
as possible, including accurate detailed information on defects. The reason for rejecting the
casting must be clearly stated, and be supported with detailed information. Defect
information must as a minimum contain accurate positions, types, extent and depth of
corrosion, together with detailed sketches.
1.4
Identification
a.
NOTE: Pressure castings are not to be stamped on the highly stressed region e.g. Critical
Test Regions of the castings. The stamping should be positioned on low stress areas as
indicated below:
i. Valve bodies - should be stamped at the edge of the cover flange or in the absence
of a prominent cover flange then as close to the cover position as possible. Failing
this another flange should be stamped, but stamping on hull flanges is to be avoided.
ii. Flange fittings - to be stamped on a flange edge.
iii. Unflanged fittings - to be stamped on an area that is thicker that the minimum
acceptable wall thickness.
2.
2.1
NAB Register
a.
The NAB Register is the document used to monitor and control the inspection and
replacement of First Level Quality Assured NAB castings which are normally in
contact with sea water and are fitted on HM Submarines. Arrangements are being
made to enter and control the NAB Register on the Master Record Database. Until
this is accomplished the requirements of Clauses 2.2, 2.3 and 2.4 are to apply.
b.
The approved format of the NAB Register is detailed at Annex D. Minor variations
to this format are acceptable provided all the information detailed in Annex D is
included, and approval has been obtained from the Design Authority. Columns 10
and 11 are to be completed by the Design Authority.
c.
2.2
2.3
2.4
The Shipbuilder is to be contracted to prepare the NAB Register for all castings as
defined in Clause 2.1b above. The Register is to be dated and is to contain all the
information in the format detailed at Annex D.
b.
The NAB Register is to be supplied by the Shipbuilder at the end of build, and
should be available at the first reading of the D448 / Defect & Deficiency Data Base
(SSP 52 refers). The copy supplied to the submarine Commanding Officer will
always be designated as the Master Copy.
c.
The Shipbuilder is also to send one copy of the NAB Register to the Design
Authority not later than one month after the acceptance of the submarine into service
(PAD).
b.
c.
d.
During a DP, the DP contractor is responsible for updating the master copy of the
Register in accordance with the DAR. Copies of new pages and amendments must be
forwarded to WSA/DPA in order to update the Design Authority's copy of the NAB
Register. At the end of the DP the Registers will be audited along with the First
Level Quality Assurance documentation and should be available prior to the first
reading of the D237a.
During the LOP(R), the LOP(R) Contractor is responsible for preparing and updating
the Register in accordance with the DAR. The Master copies of the Register, their
amendments and any validation/revalidation certificates must be forwarded to the
contractor via WSA/DPA at the Contract Start Date (Take in Hand) in order that
SubIPT PSG2 can note and amend the Register to incorporate any changes carried
out in the previous 6 months.
b.
On forwarding the Register, the Submarine's Quality Assurance Officer must discuss
with the LOP(R) Contractor, via the Project Contract Manager (PCM), the format for
notification of the inspections and changes completed during the upkeep period by
ships staff.
8
3.
c.
At the end of the LOP(R), the Registers will be audited along with the First Level
Quality Assurance documentation and are to be available one week before the first
reading of the D237a.
d.
e.
The NAB Register in its final form, is to be certified as acceptable by the Design
Authority at the time of the first reading of the D237a.
f.
The Master NAB Register will be issued to the submarine by the PCM and one copy
forwarded to the Design Authority.

acceptability, certifies the equipment for fitting. On completion of fitting a First
Level equipment the Certificate of Conformity, together with a full set of QA
Documentation for the castings as detailed in Clause 3.1a, is to be forwarded to the
