Case 2153-1
Use of Semi-Permanent Mold Cast Aluminum Alloy
A356.0 for the Manufacture of Heating Boilers Under
Part HC
Section IV
Inquiry: May aluminum alloy A356.0 semi-permanent
mold castings in the T61 temper meeting the chemical
composition and mechanical properties given in Tables 1
and 2 and other requirements of SB-108 be used in Section
IV, Part HC, construction of heating boilers for temperatures up to 250F?
Reply: It is the opinion of the Committee that aluminum
alloy A356.0 semi-permanent mold castings in the T61
temper meeting the chemical composition and mechanical
properties in Tables 1 and 2 and other requirements of
SB-108 may be used in Section IV, Part HC, construction
of heating boilers for temperatures up to 250F under the
following conditions:
(a) Design temperature shall not exceed 250F.
(b) No welding is permitted except for repairs by the
casting producer, as allowed in para. 17 of SB-108.
(c) In lieu of Section IV, HC-200 through HC-213, all
applicable requirements of SB-108 and Tables 1 and 2 of
this Case shall apply. The footnotes applicable to Tables

The Committees function is to establish rules of safety, relating only to pressure integrity, governing the construction of boilers, pressure vessels, transport tanks and
nuclear components, and inservice inspection for pressure integrity of nuclear components and transport tanks, and to interpret these rules when questions arise
regarding their intent. This Code does not address other safety issues relating to the construction of boilers, pressure vessels, transport tanks and nuclear components,
and the inservice inspection of nuclear components and transport tanks. The user of the Code should refer to other pertinent codes, standards, laws, regulations or
other relevant documents.
