CHORAL SPEAKING: UNITY

Come, take a walk down memory lane

With us, the students of SMK Taman Nusa Jaya
Hurry up, lets go!
Why wait?
Make haste!
Come on everybody, well lead the way
Lets flip through the pages of our history
Before our country gained independence
And what a long journey it was!
Speaker 1: Yeah, how many years was that?
Speaker 2: Not years. Centuries!
Choir
: Centuries? [GASP]
So, before our country is what it is today
Our motherland had gone through a lot
Occupations, invasions, wars, riots
And other unspeakable things

1: The Portuguese
2: Dutch
3: British
4: Japanese
Had all tried to lay claim on our precious land

But all these attempts

Were foiled by our forefathers
They fought fearlessly
Till the last drop of blood had been shed
Individuals:

I got the eye of the tiger, a fighter
Dancing through the fire
Cause I am a champion and
Youre gonna hear me roar
Louder, louder than a lion
Cause I am a champion and
Youre gonna hear me roar
Oh oh oh oh oh oh...
*Excuse me, enough already!
Now, to cut the story short
Came 1957
31st August to be exact

Right at the stroke of midnight

The Union Jack was lowered
The proud new Flag of Malaya was raised
Accompanied by Negaraku, our national anthem
In the morning
At 9.30 a.m., crowds gathered at the Merdeka Stadium
to witness the most important moment of our history
After the Proclamation of Independence had been read
Seven chants of Merdeka! by Tunku Abdul Rahman
were echoed by the 20,000 people there
[Im sure there were more!]
Again the national flag was raised
to Negaraku, played by the military band
A 21-gun salute,
[One, 21 guns, throw up your arms into the sky, you and I]
Followed by an azan call
And a thanksgiving prayer
To honour this great historical occasion
Fast forward 12 years...
One fateful day in 1969
13th May if you can recall
A riot broke out
Hostility and violence abound
And our unity threatened
This black day will forever be etched in our memories
One that we hope will not repeat itself
Let us try to maintain the peace and unity that we have now
Come together
Forget our differences
Lets lepak with our friends at the mamak
Ngeteh or ngopi, its up to you
