REVIEW OF LITERATURE
A study of relevant literature is an essential step to get a
full picture of what has been done with regard to the problem
under study. It helps the investigator to go deep into the
problem on one hand and study the different sides of the
problem the other. Knowledge of the previous studies also
leads the researcher to the proper direction of his or her
work.
The process of information seeking various depending
on the information needs of the user as Allen pointed out that
the needs of individuals working on projects changes as the
project progresses. Subject- specific information literacy has
additional dimension and is closely related to the pattern of
information flow as in that discipline.
In

present

era

of

economic

development

higher

education has been regarded as a key factor to enhance

human mind- which in turn helps in achieving higher growth.
Indian higher education is in the process of reviewing its
achievements and equipping its infrastructure with modern
gadgets

and

ideologies

to

face

the

challenges

of

modernization or global development process. The major

development in higher education during the last decade is
shift from teacher- centered instruction to student- centered
learning.

Universities are the center places of learning, teaching

and

research.

educators,

In

these

many

faculty

members,

and

librarians/information managers work together to achieve the

set of goals.
Libraries are changed with preserving past, serving the
needs of present, and inviting new information service
frameworks for the future. With modernization access to
unlimited information resources and interaction with globally
distributed users communities has became the job support of
learning.

Some

more

functions

has

been

added

with

digitization and networking.

The present day libraries are becoming resource centers
than collection building centres. With globalised character of
libraries responsibilities have increased, (Gupta, 2004).
A

well-equipped

and

well-managed

library

is

the

foundation of modern educational structure. Education and

library service are twin sister rather true lovers and one
cannot lie apart from each other. The library is the heart of an
institute, which provides students, teachers and researcher
scholars with the tools for advancement as well as acquisition
of knowledge . (Sharma, 1994).
Libraries are a direct incentive to the development of
educational, social and cultural activities. In the words of Dr.
S.R. Ranganathan, Libraries are not more store houses, they
are rich springs from which knowledge flows at to irrigate
field of education and culture.. The level of a countrys

development depend largely on level of its higher education.

After the achievement of independence, recently, higher
education in India has been systematically redesigned to
meet the challenges of 21st century. (Bedi, 1994).
The twentieth century witnessed the explosion of
knowledge and information enshrined not only in books and
serials, but also in technical and scientific reports, patents
standards and specification, transaction trade circulars,
reprints, off-prints, micro-documents and photocopies. With
increasing specialization has come increasing fragmentation
not only of literature but also of the groups of individuals
producing and using literature. (Sharma, 1994).
Considerable expansion has taken place in the field of
higher education since independence. The growth has taken
place

in

establishing

large

number

of

educational

institutions. While at the time of independence there were

seventeen universities, today there number has gone beyond
one hundred and seventy six including institutions deemed to
be universities. (Kaula, 1994).
University library in India are on the threshold of a great
leap, both in respect of their relationship vis--vis the society
at large, and in respect of their internal organization.
The electronic age has arrived and the dream of paperless and wall-less libraries seems to be coming true with the
advert of computers, scanners and digitization of the library
materials. (Narang, 2004).

The service given to the users in library is known as

information service library is composed of three basic factors;
user, book and staff. Use of library means use of book or
recorded knowledge in any other form by the users. As all
economic activities is governed by the consumer so, is the
library shaped by its users. The need and the requirements of
the user form the base for the composition of the library
stock. (Sharma, 1989).
An alphabetical subject index is more considered more
relevant for searching information by topics. Users feel the
need for more assistance from the library for locating
books/journals on the shelves. (Walke, Tewari, Wadhwa,
2006).
A number of studies conducted in different countries
have established the fact that only a few scientists make the
optimum use of libraries and are aware of the various
bibliographical tools. The inference is that contrary to the
opinion of some academics, knowledge of the structure and
use of scientific literature is not gained intuitively, but has to
be taught.
The phrase review of literature of literature consist of
two words review and literature The word literature has
conveyed different meaning from the tradtional meaning. IT
issue with reference to the language eg. Hindi literature
English literature sanskrit literature. It includes a subject
content prose poetry dramas novel stroies etc here in
research methodology the term literature refers to the

knowledge of a particulars area of investigation of any

discipline which includes theoritical practical and it research
study.
The very work review and literature approach in
historical research

the researcher does much more than

review already published material he seek to dicover and to

integrate material he seek to discover and to integrate new
information which has never been reported and never
considered The concept and process implied in the term
review of literature have such different meaning in historical
as compared with survey and experimantal research.
Definition :According to W.R.Bong
The literature in any field forms the foundation upon which all
future work will be built if we fail to built the foundation on
knowledge provided by the review of literature our work is
likely to be shallow and native and will often duplicate work
that has already been done better by some are else.

According to Good Barrand Scates

The competent physician must keep abrest of the latest
discoveries in the field of medicine obviously the careful
student of education the research workder and investigator
should become familiar with location and use of sources of
educaional information.

The Perry committee report includes a survey of the

undergraduate use of the university libraries in the United
Kingdom. (Stevenson, 1977).

METHODOLOGY

Research:
Research is a systematic and chronological efforts of finding
out a more appropriate solution to a common social problem. The
word research means to search again and aging and it is
composed of two words. When re-aging and again search- To find
out something.
Every research activity is initiated while keeping in mind a
question, problem, incident or behaviour. Here the researches
tries to find out and identify as to why, when, how and by whom
was the research problem generated. Research has taken field
survey for data collection.

C.A. Moser- Research is a systematized investigation to gain

new knowledge about social phenomenon and problems.

E.S. Bogards- Research is the investigation of underlying

process operative tin the live of person who are in
association.

4.1 Observation:
It is an important and ancient technique of every research
study. It is not only a basis for scientific tool of study and analysis
the events happing around in ones daily life unless the researcher
verifies them directly he does not accept them.
According

to

Goode

and

Hatt,

science

begins

with

observation and it has to return to observation for final

verification. All the scientists whether biological physiological
social or management believe that observation forms a base for
all scientific method. All scientific studies for the purpose of
inspection and experimentation of its results are dependent on
observation
In the present scenario this method is used in a number of
scientific fields, like- society, group classmate, female, children,
sports, institutions etc.
Definition:
-

C.A. Moser- observation implies the use of eyes rather than

of the ears and the voice.

P.V. Young observation is a systematic and deliberate study
through the eyes of the spontaneous occurrence at the time

they occur.
Oxford Concise Dictionary- observation means accurate
watching and nothing of phenomenon as they occur in
nature with regard to cause and effect or mutual relations.

4.2 Questionnaire:
It is an important technique used by a researches for
collecting primary data. A questionnaire is a list of questions
concerning the subject matter. The researcher send it to the

respondent through mail or courier. The respondents on the other

hand reads and understand the question. He then fills up and
sends them back through mail, courier or any other means. In
modern social research the basic objective of a questionnaire is to
collect primary data. In general a questionnaire refers to a
systematic and logical arrangement of question which helps in
collecting important data relating to the subject matter,. It is a
superior

method

of

for

social,

financial,

commercial, industrial, political and psychological researcher.

Definition:
-

E. Bogards A questionnaire is a list of questions to a

number of persons for them to answer. A self made
questionnaire containing 11 questions has been made. All
questionnaires

are

related

with

modern

information

technology i.e. C.D. ROM, OPAC, Data base, E-mail, CAS etc.
H.P. Yang- In its simplest form a questionnaire consists of a
schedule of questions sent by mail to person on a list in a

survey sample.
It constitutes a convenient method of obtaining a limited
amount of information from a small selected group which is
widely scattered.

Sampling:
Stastical data can be collected either by census enquiry or
by sample enquiry. In a census all the units of a universe have to
be studied where as in a sample only selected number of units are
observed and conclusions are drawn about the universe from their
study.
-

Goode and Hatt- A sample as the name implies, is a smaller

representation of a larger whole.

Bogardus- Sampling is the selection of certain percentage of

a group of items according to a pre-determined plan.

A.C. Rocendor- A population is the totally of objects under

consideration.
H.P. Yang- A statistical sample is a cross section of the entire
group. Our sampling is random sampling is that method of
drawing a portion of a population or unive4rse so that each
number of the population has an equal chance of being
selected (F.N. Kertinger).
A random sampling in the library of IIT Roorkee has been

done. Total sample is 60.30 boys & 30 girls.

CHAPTER -5
RESULT AND DISCUSSION

As society is becoming more complex and depend on

science and technology, the need for timely organization,
communication and dissemination of information is increasing. We
are in the age of information technology revolution along with
information explosion. There has been a growing interest and
concern over modernization of library operations and services in
India since 1980s. Due to information explosion, automation of
library services is imperative for efficiency and effective working
of library and information center. The automation is defined as a
techniques

of

making

processes

or

system

operates

automatically. According to encylopedia of library and information

science. It is a need of hour therefore, the present study deals
with a servey work find out the impact of information technology
in acadimic library. There is a continuing evolution of the rules and
function of library and libratians, which appears to parallel the
growth of acceptance and use of the internet by library
professionals. Realizing the potentials .. are rushing to getting
the connectivity. Realizing the budding point the persent study has
been elected to find out the impact of in formation technology of
academic library for these work the modern technologies are
involved. It shows that the bigger institute which have more
financial support and more serious research works they have
adopted primarly the automation without information technology
resources.
a) Data Analysis All the questions have been checked and
analysed in percentage.

b) After analysing percentage the data base are shown

graphically to show their comperative study.

CHAPTER -6
SUGGESTIONS FOR FUTURE BENEFITS

Library and formation science college libraries should

develop special training programmes for library staff on the use of
computers in library and organize special advanced training
cources for professional librarians on the use of computers in
libraries. Colleges without qualified librarians should recruit them
staff of the library should be sent to training courses to upgrade
their information technology skills. The management boards of
colleges should take immediate step to modernize the college
libraries. Library should be designed with proper library building
plan and it should be independent library building. The print and
non-print resource should be purchased to meet the need of the
students as well as staff. These must be national and international
journals in print or electronics form in the libraries to acquire the
lasted development. The libraries should be automated with the
library management software and the work of automation should
be done by the skill library professionals. User education should
be developed to provide library service in any where. Imparted to
the patrons of the library at a regular interval, users should be
given facilities to use USB, CD or DVD to get their required
electronic documents. The initiative should be taken to form a
library network among these libraries and it should be linked with
the other library network in the country to share their resource. A
comprehensive collection development policy for re-resources
should be maintained by the libraries in the study, in order to

follow a set of standard practies for acquisition and management

of electronic in formation resource.

6.1 Conclusion:
Today computer and related technologies has brought
revolutionary changes in the whole world of information perhaps,
this is the most exciting period in the history of human race when
worlds most population is shifting from techno-illiterate to technolitrate. This revolutionary change is also true in the case of
libraries and information centers can hardly functin today without
computer and information technologies. A well equipped library
with the facilities of modern information infrastructures and
technologies could satisfy the maximum demand of the present
technology

conscious

users.

The

private

engineering

and

management colleges of world are trying their best to pace with

the chaining of ICT application the libraries. Now, the library
services shifted towards E-Library Services, but due to some
common obstruction in the library services fails to satisfy the
demand of the users community.
