This class provides an overview of telecommunications and computer networking


concepts, network design, and management concepts. In addition this course introduces
networking topologies, layers (OSI & TCP/IP models), hardware (equipment) and
software (Network Operating Systems), protocols, and TCP/IP related topics. Also, this
course introduces basic technical and non-technical networking knowledge, which helps
students to work in the computer-networking field. Because of the constant change in the
computer networking technologies (hardware and software), modern networking and class
related topics are discussed such as secure protocols, network security, firewall,
dematerialize (DMZ), virtual private network (VPN), intrusion detection systems (IDS),
and wireless network.
Also a brief introduction to the new protocol used (IPv6), and its advantages over IPv4.

Define computer networks and its basic elements


Differentiate between the basic encoding techniques.
Understand the advantages and disadvantages of different network medium.
Understand Multiplexing and its different multiplexing techniques.
Understand errors, errors detection methods and error controls.
Understand the basic LAN topologies and Medium Access Control protocols
Understand the basic differences between IPv4 and IPv6 protocols.
