WARNING SUMMARY
You must be in full individual protective ensemble or Mission Oriented Protective
Posture, Level 4, (MOPP4) while using this system.
The Sorbent Decontamination System (M100 SDS) only removes the liquid hazard.
Decontaminated items may still present a vapor hazard. Don't unmask until it's been
determined safe to do so.
The M100 SDS cannot be decontaminated. Do not reduce MOPP level until it has been

HOW TO USE THIS MANUAL

The Decontamination System, Sorbent: M100 (SDS) operator manual contains the
information needed for the operator to perform authorized decontamination. The manual
uses the work package concept and is divided into three chapters as follows:
CHAPTER 1 INTRODUCTORY INFORMATION WITH THEORY OF OPERATION
contains general information, equipment description and theory of operation.
CHAPTER 2 OPERATOR INSTRUCTIONS contains operating procedures under
usual conditions, operating procedures under unusual conditions, and disposal of
systems.
CHAPTER 3 SUPPORTING INFORMATION provides additional information needed to
operate and maintain the M100 SDS. It contains work packages that include references,
an Additional Authorized List (AAL), and a Material Safety Data Sheet (MSDS).

SCOPE
TYPE OF MANUAL.
Instructions in this manual explain how to use the Sorbent Decontamination System
(M100 SDS) to conduct the operators wipe down portion of Immediate Decontamination.
MODEL NUMBER AND EQUIPMENT NAME.

The official nomenclature is Decontamination System, Sorbent: M100.
PURPOSE OF EQUIPMENT.
The M100 SDS allows you to conduct the operators wipe down portion of Immediate
Decontamination of chemical agents. The M100 SDS shall be used for combat and
training purposes.
(1) The purpose of Immediate Decontamination is to remove the gross
contamination, limit the spread of the chemical agent, and minimize
casualties.
(2) The primary equipment operator or driver does the operators wipe down after
he has decontaminated himself and his personal equipment.
MAINTENANCE FORMS, RECORDS AND REPORTS

Department of the Army forms and procedures used for equipment maintenance will be
those prescribed by DA PAM 738-750, Functional Users Manual for the Army
Maintenance Management System (TAMMS).
Air Force personnel will comply with Air Force Technical Order (TO) 11W-1-10 and Air
Force (AF) Form 105 for maintenance actions.
Marine Corps personnel refer to the on-line Marine Corps Publication Distribution
System (MCPDS) or Marine Corps Stock list SL-1-2 Index of Technical Publications.
Marine Corps personnel will use TM 4700-15/1, (Equipment Record Procedures).

CORROSION PREVENTION AND CONTROL

Corrosion Prevention and Control (CPC) of material is a continuing concern. It is
important that any corrosion problems with this item be reported so that the problem can
be corrected and improvements can be made to prevent the problem in future items.
While corrosion is typically associated with rusting of metals, it can also include
deterioration of other materials such as rubber and plastic. Unusual cracking, softening,
swelling, or breaking of these materials may be a corrosion problem.
If a corrosion problem is identified, it can be reported using SF 368, Product Quality
Deficiency Report. Use of key words such as "corrosion," "rust," "deterioration," or
"cracking" will assure that the information is identified as a CPC problem.
DESTRUCTION OF ARMY MATERIEL TO PREVENT ENEMY USE

Destroy the equipment components by using demolition or mechanical methods as
described in TM 43-0002-31.

EQUIPMENT CHARACTERISTICS, CAPABILITIES AND FEATURES

CONTENTS
(1) Each M100 SDS consists of one case, two decontamination kits, and two case
closure straps. Each decontamination kit contains one applicator mitt and one
pack containing 300 grams of sorbent powder (see MSDS in Supporting
Information, Work Package 0009 00 of this manual).
(2) An optional mounting bracket is available as an Additional Authorized List (AAL)
item. See Supporting Information for bracket details.

(3) If your unit elects not to use the mounting bracket, then store the M100 SDS in
accordance with load plans or standing operating procedures (SOP).
ACCOUNTABILITY
M100 SDS is an expendable item of equipment. Dispose of the M100 SDS and all
contents after use in accordance with unit SOP and local environmental requirements.
STORAGE
M100 SDS can be stored over a wide range of temperatures from severe cold to hot: 50 deg. F (-45 deg. C) to 160 deg. F (71 deg. C).
SHIPPING
There are no special labeling, shipping or packaging requirements.
LOCATION AND DESCRIPTION OF MAJOR COMPONENTS

The case (A) is the storage unit for the two
decontamination kits. It is either mounted using the
optional bracket described in this manual under
Supporting Information in the AAL table, or stored in
accordance with SOP. The case is held together by two
straps (B). The decontamination kits (C) each contain an
applicator mitt and a sorbent pack (shown in Figures 2
and 3).

The applicator mitt is a cloth mitt. This mitt is to be placed

on the users hand. There are no finger or thumb
configurations, so the mitt can be worn on either hand and
may be rotated to obtain a clean surface. There is an
elastic band inside the applicator mitt you may grasp for
better control.

The sorbent pack is a pouch containing 300 grams of

sorbent powder. The sorbent powder inside the pouch
should not be used if this pouch is damaged in any way.

THEORY OF OPERATION

The M100 SDS allows you to conduct the operators wipe down portion of Immediate
Decontamination. The system consists of one case, two decontamination kits and two
straps. Each decontamination kit contains one applicator mitt and one sorbent pack.
NOTE
When applied, some surfaces may appear shiny or even wet. Surface should
be tested with M8 paper after decontamination operations are complete to
confirm or deny agent presence.
The operators wipe down portion of Immediate Decontamination process consists of
opening one of the decontamination kits, extracting the mitt and sorbent pack. While
wearing the mitt, a user pours a generous portion of the sorbent powder from the
sorbent pack onto the mitt. The user then rubs the sorbent powder filled mitt on the
contaminated surface until the surface appears dry. Sorbent powder may be added to
the mitt as needed.

For external use only. Sorbent powder may be slightly irritating to
skin or eyes. Keep sorbent powder out of eyes, cuts and wounds.
Avoid inhalation of sorbent powder.
NOTE
Dispose of expended or leaking materials in accordance with local
environmental restrictions and SOP.
ASSEMBLY AND PREPARATION FOR USE

1. Before and during operations checks. You, the operator, must ensure the M100
SDS is ready for use before, during, and after your mission. Perform the following
inspection item on the M100 SDS:
a. Inspect the case for cracks and breaks. If detected, replace M100 SDS.
b. Inspect the decontamination kits for loose sorbent powder. If loose sorbent
powder is detected, replace M100 SDS. Dispose of expended or leaking
materials in accordance with local environmental restrictions and SOP. If
one of the kits is intact, it may be retained and marked for training IAW unit
SOP.
c. Inspect the mounting bracket if used. Tighten any loose screws.
d. Inspect the straps. Replace entire M100 SDS if straps are worn or frayed.
NOTE
Do not use tape to secure and close the case, it cannot be
removed when you are wearing your rubber protective
gloves.
2. During operations. None.
3. After operations checks. The M100 SDS is for a one-time use so if it has been used
during operations, dispose of the entire M100 SDS according to the local SOP.

OPERATING PROCEDURES
WARNING
You must be in full individual protective ensemble or Mission Oriented Protective
Posture, Level 4, (MOPP4) while using this system.
NOTE
When you determine that your equipment, vehicle, or crew-served weapons are
contaminated with chemical agents, act quickly. Stop breathing, close eyes, don
protective mask, and perform Immediate Decontamination to yourself and
personal items using the Decontamination Kit, Skin: M291 and Decontamination
Kit, Individual Equipment: M295, respectively. Then, decontaminate your
equipment, vehicles, or crew-served weapons using the M100 SDS.
This kit is intended for Immediate Decontamination of equipment, vehicles, and
crew-served weapons. The operators wipe down technique is most effective
when done within fifteen minutes after personal wipe down.
The M100 SDS decontamination kit is to be opened immediately prior to use.
1. Locate and obtain the M100 SDS from the bracket or its storage location. Open the
case and place it within easy reach. Remove one decontamination kit from the case.
2. Open the decontamination kit at the tear notches. Remove the applicator mitt and
place it inside the case.
3. Hold sorbent pack upright. Gently shake pack to allow sorbent powder to settle to
bottom of pack.
4. Open the pack by tearing along the strip at the notch.

5. Place the opened sorbent pack in or against the case so it does not spill over.
6. Recover the applicator mitt and fluff. Place applicator mitt onto your gloved hand.
There is an elastic band inside the applicator mitt you may grasp for better control.
Pick up the sorbent pack with your free hand, so you can pour the sorbent powder
onto the applicator mitt. You may switch the applicator mitt onto either hand if your
arm becomes tired.
7. Pour a generous amount of sorbent powder onto palm of the applicator mitt and
gently shake. Sorbent powder is caught up by the fibers, but is released when you
begin the rubbing action.

8. Rub sorbent powder onto target areas using primarily the palm side of the mitt.
Make sure all target areas are thoroughly contacted with sorbent powder. The more
you rub the sorbent powder onto the chemical agent areas, the more effective it is in
removing the contamination. Add more sorbent powder to the applicator mitt as
required.
CAUTION
Optical systems are extremely vulnerable to powders, which
might scratch or adversely affect the lenses. Use care when
applying the sorbent.
Sorbent powder is not designed to be used on sensitive
equipment. Use minimal amounts of powder around sensitive
equipment areas.
NOTE
Sorbent powder may begin to clump in wet conditions.
9. Decontaminate first those critical surface areas that you must touch to operate the
equipment, vehicle, or crew-served weapon. Decontaminate the other areas of your
equipment, vehicle, or crew-served weapon as your mission allows. Pay
particular attention to the areas where contamination occurs.
WARNING
The M100 SDS does not permit a reduction in MOPP level.
Personnel should remain in MOPP4 until it has been

sorbent powder will begin to neutralize the agent. However, you must still be in
MOPP IV.

NOTE
The sorbent powder continues to react with the chemical
agent. In combat, you can leave any loose powder on your
equipment, vehicle and crew-served weapons.
When applied, some surfaces may appear shiny or even wet.
Surface should be tested with M8 paper after decontamination
operations are complete to confirm or deny agent presence.
11. You may pour sorbent powder onto the top and sides of the applicator mitt in order to
effectively apply powder into cracks, crevices, corners, etc.
12. If the surface of the applicator mitt becomes caked with sorbent powder, rotate the
applicator mitt to get a clean surface.
13. For additional sorbent powder, open the second pack and continue to decontaminate
until all the critical surfaces appear free of liquid chemical contamination.
WARNING
Sorbent powder left on the vehicles may present inhalation
and ocular hazards to unmasked personnel when the vehicle
is in motion. In training, excess powder should be dusted off
the vehicle in accordance with local environmental regulations
and SOP.
The M100 SDS can NOT be decontaminated. Therefore, once
exposed to chemical agents, the M100 SDS must be
discarded before reducing MOPP level.
14. Decontaminate your protective gloves and boots by rubbing a handful of sorbent
powder onto them.
15. Upon completion of the decontamination process dispose of the ENTIRE M100
SDS.

NOTE
The system was designed to work on liquid agents. At extreme low
temperatures, some agents such as mustard will solidify. When mustard freezes,
you may not be able to remove all of it with the M100 SDS. What remains may
become contact or vapor hazards if vehicle warms up or if you move to a warmer
environment.
The sorbent powder is designed to operate in extreme temperature ranges (Operating
Temperatures in Equipment Data from work package 0002 for temperatures).
Perform decontamination with M100 SDS per operating procedures in work package
0004.

Loose sorbent powder can present inhalation and ocular hazards for
unprotected personnel. Personnel in the vicinity of loose sorbent powder
should wear protective masks.
NOTE
Once exposed to chemical agent, the sorbent should be treated as a hazardous
waste.
Dispose of M100 SDS when damaged, or after use in accordance with local
environmental requirements and unit SOP.

INTRODUCTION
The M100 SDS has an optional mounting bracket that you can order. The NSN
(National Stock Number) is 5340-01-466-5928. The bracket has the same mounting
hole configuration as the bracket for the M11 Decontamination Apparatus.
GENERAL
This list identifies items that do not have to accompany the M100 SDS and that do not
have to be turned in with it. These items are all authorized to you by the Common Table
of Allowances (CTA), Modification Table of Organization and Equipment (MTOE), Table
of Distribution and Allowances (TDA) or Joint Table of Allowances (JTA).
EXPLANATIONS OF COLUMNS IN THE AAL
Column (1), National Stock Number, identifies the stock number of the item to be used
for requisitioning purposes.
Column (2), Description, Commercial and Government Entity Code (CAGEC), and Part
Number, identifies the Federal item name (in all capital letters) followed by a minimum
description when needed. The last line below the description is the CAGEC (in
parenthesis) and the part number.
Column (3), Usable On Code, when applicable, provides a code if the item needed is not

Inhalation:
Exposure to dust of any kind may produce respiratory allergy with

symptoms of asthma in a small portion of workers. Dust particles
of any kind may be abrasive and may cause irritation, chest pain,
and shortness of breath.
Ingestion:
May cause gastrointestinal disorders.
Warning:
Dust of any kind in high concentrations may cause injury to skin,

eyes, or respiratory tract.
4. First Aid Measures

Eyes:
Flush eyes with running water for at least 15 minutes. Lift upper
and lower eyelids and rinse under them. Do not rub eyes. Seek
medical attention if irritation develops or persists.
Skin:
In case of contact, wash with soap and plenty of water.
Inhalation:
Remove to fresh air. If breathing has stopped, administer artificial

respiration, oxygen, or cardio-pulmonary resuscitation if needed.
Seek medical aid as needed.
Ingestion:
No adverse effects expected, but seek medical advice.
5. Accidental Release Measures

Sweep up into appropriate container. Avoid creating dusting conditions.
6. Handling and Storage

Store in cool, dry place in tightly closed containers. Avoid breathing dusts. Avoid direct
or prolonged contact with skin and eyes. Wash hands thoroughly after handling. Do not
rub eyes with soiled hands. Do not eat, drink, or smoke in the work area.
Does not burn.
If the material is pneumatically conveyed, ground the equipment to avoid excessive
static electricity. Sparks from static electricity can ignite any combustible vapors
present.

Respiratory Protection:
Atmospheric levels should be maintained below the

exposure guideline. Where the exposure guideline
may be greatly exceeded, use appropriate
NIOSH/MSHA respirator.
Skin Protection:
Work uniform, gloves.
Eye Protection:
Safety glasses with sideshields or monogoggles.
Other clothing
And Equipment:
Maintain a sink, safety shower and eyewash

fountain in the work area.
