INTRODUCTION

Jamdani (Bengali: ) is one of the finest muslin textiles of Bengal, produced in Dhaka
District, Bangladesh for centuries.
The historic production of jamdani was patronized by imperial warrants of the Mughal emperors.
Under British colonialism, the Bengali jamdani and muslin industries rapidly declined due to
colonial import policies favoring industrially manufactured textiles. In more recent years, the
production of jamdani has witnessed a revival in Bangladesh.
The traditional art of weaving jamdani has been declared by UNESCO as a Intangible Cultural
Heritage of Humanity

The word jamdani is Persian, where "jam" means cup and "dani" means flower vase. Thus
jamdani designs depict arrangement of flowers sewn with fine threads on muslin. When the

surface of the muslin fabric is sewn with diagonally striped floral sprays, the jamdani is
popularly known as "Terchha." The most exquisite design is "Panna Hazaar" (a thousand
emeralds), where the floral pattern is highlighted with gold and silver threads. There are other
coveted designs such as the "Kalka" and "Phulwar." The peculiarity of jamdani is the geometric
design. The weavers do not draw the design before hand on paper. They work on the design from
their memory, and express their creative genius.

In this assignment, I was required to collect the images of different types of patterns, motifs or
design in Jamdani, but when I started searching it I was really confused because nothing is
individually indicated there. Then I myself tried to imagine and present the images of different
types of patterns in jamdani. The images which I selected for these patterns may be wrong but I
tried my level best, so I will be ever grateful if your overlook these mistakes and be considerate
enough.

There the picture of seven types of patterns in Jamdani.

PANNAHAZAR

BUTIDAR

TERSA

JALAR NAKSA

DURIA

BELWARI

JHALOR

I have also included other different types of patterns in jamdani whose name is unknown to me ,
but I found these designs to be very beautiful and intriguing.

CONCLUSION
A Jamdani Palli has been established near Dhaka. Jamdani, one of the oldest forms of cottage
industry in Bangladesh, was once was a dying trade. It was successfully revived due to the
pioneering work of entrepreneurs such as Monira Emdad. Tangail Saree Kutir along with other
sari stores on Baily Road, and Dhakaiaa Jamdani Hut stores at Noor Mansion Shopping Mall
strive to support the thousands of weavers of Bangladesh who have struggled to keep this age old
tradition and fashion alive. Organizations like Radiant Institute of Design, Shanto Mariam
University of creative technology,National Institute of Design (NID) and others are helping
designers create new Jamdani designs.
Jamdani has never gone out of style. Even today, Jamdani is equally valued It has and it always
will symbolize aristocracy. The demand for quality Jamdani Sarees have increased exponentially
over the years.
