Course Objectives
There is growing evidence that optimal performance in a work environment is driven not only by technical
competencies but also by self-management and behavioral skills that enable knowledge and experience to be
translated into high value added results.
Continuous change in the competitive environment requires flexible organizational models that build
themselves upon internal and external networks rather than on hierarchy, on being result rather than
compliance oriented with people taking on personal responsibility for their own behaviors and impact, and
upon continuous learning rather than on specialized knowledge.
Networks, result orientation, responsibility and continuous learning require the development of selfregulation abilities together with communication, influence, negotiation and team management skills for
performance effectiveness. These are the topics on which the teaching and learning will be focused.
Given the learning goals, teaching will be experience-based and highly interactive. Brief theory modules will
be followed by experience-based learning situations to build competencies and to facilitate transfer to the
class and work environment.
Course contents
The main topics that will be addressed are:
- Effective one-to-one communication
- Negotiation skills
- Influence, the art and craft of power management
- Team building and team work
Class participation and assessment methods
You can choose to be either an attending or a non-attending student.
Attending students
Course Materials:

Evaluation mode:
Written exam with multiple-choice questions (pass or fail mode).
If you are an attending student you will have to TAKE the exam on March 23th 2015 (Mid-Term
exam), but you MUST also sign up for the exam scheduled on May 20th 2015 (Mid-Term exam) to
have your grade registered.
o ATTENTION! You will NOT be able to take the exam on May 20th, but your grade will
NOT be registered unless you have signed up for the May 20th exam. There are no
exceptions.
The students who should have attended and taken the exam last year and want to attend this year to take the
exam as an attending student are kindly requested to fill in the registration form attached at the end of the
course syllabus. It will be available via the agenda You@B (or can be obtained from Mrs. De Monte), and
should be returned to the Secretarys Office at the Department of Management and Technology (Via
Roentgen, IV Floor, Office C3-02) by Feb 17 2015 .
Non-Attending students

Evalutation mode:
Written exam with multiple-choice and open-ended questions, pass or fail mode. Non attending students will
be allowed to take the exam only from May 22th 2015 session.
