FASTENER IDENTIFICATION MARKING

o n Fasteners, International Organization for Standardization). The majority of the member countries agreed that publication of an international
listing of manufacturer markings would be a significant contribution and USA was invited to be
the custodian. As a first submittal, the European
Industrial Fasteners Institute published, in 1983, a
compilation of the marking symbols used by the
fastener manufacturers in 12 European countries.
IFI, in conjunction with FASTENER TECHNOLOGY,

worked on an updating of its IFI-122 realeased in

early 1987.
In 1987, The American Society of Mechanical Engineers accepted responsibility to collect,
collate and publish a listing of world-wide fastener
manufacturer markings. In July 1987 ASME published a first edition of "A Guide to the Markings
of Fastener Manufacturers" and it plans to up-

GKN load indicating bolt (Lib*)

It is now established as the first choice
of both designers and erectors.
is because torque-tensionrelations vary considerably according to
tMe condition and finish of the bolts
and cannot be relied upon as a measure
of bolt tension unless repeated calibrations are carried out.
The. GKN load indicating bolt gives a
reliable, easily read, direct indication
that it has been tightened correctly,
independent of the torque required to
do so, while at the same time retaining
all the advantages of standard high
strength bolts.
To ensure that the minimum required
tension has been achieved all that is
necessary is to check that the gaps
under the bolt head have been reduced
to prevent entry of a simple feeler
gauge. Experience will in many cases
bnable gap closure to be visually
checked.

the contact surfaces.

Standard high strength bolt

This is a hexagon head bolt made to
BS.4395 from a medium carbon steel,
carefully selected for strength and
ductility. The bolt is used together with
a special nut and hardened washer.
The strength of the nuts'were chosen
to make sure it would develop the full
mechanical properties of the bolt without thread stripping and the distortion
of the nut. The hardened washer is
used under the tightening member to
provide a uniform surface for tightening. GKN high strength bolts can also
be supplied in higher grade material to
BS.4395 : Part 2 *.
Countersunk high strength friction grip
bolts (head dimensions to BS.4933)
can be made specially to order.
*The use of higher. grade bolts is
restricted to joints subject only to
shear. Where joints made with higher
grade bolts carry loads in the direction
of the bolt axes, bolts with waisted
shanks are recommended.

oince nign screngm triction grip boits

are tightened to high pre-loads, they
are particularly suitable for applications where severe vibration is present
such as gantry cranes, conveyors,
quarry sizing screens, railway freight
wagons etc.

Higher grade bolts/waisted shank(

type
These bolts are available to special
order only, in diameters from M16 to
M33. For details of dimensions and
mechanical properties refer to BS.4395
: Part 3.
By the provision of waisted shanks, the
limitations imposed on parallel shank,
higher grade bolts by low ductility, areovercome to the extent that the bolts
may be used in joints subject to tension
as well as to shear, and that tightening
by the part-turn method becomes
appropriate.
Attention is drawn to the importance
of ensuring that these bolts are correctly
used if satisfactory results are to be
obtained.
Recommendations giving
guidance in the use of this form of
fastener are given in BS.4604 : Part 3.

F or further details on high

strength bolting, please refer to
our separate brochure covering
these bolts.

T he GKN foundation bolt gives a rigid

and permanent anchorage to walls and
floors, The disposition of the angular
faces on the indented portion of the
bolt enables it to withstand high pull
out loads when embedded. Standard
bolts are made in steel Grade 4-6 but
bolts in non -ferrous metalsand stainless
steels can be supplied to special order.
For high shear applications, indented
foundation bolts can be supplied in.
high tensile steels. They can also be
supplied spun galvanised or with any
other protective finishes. Bolts are
supplied with hexagon nuts to BS.4190
Grade 4.

Installation
T he best results are obtained when the
bolts are placed in position when the
concrete is laid, When this is not always
practicable, for example, when bolts
are to be fixed to existing walls or
floors, a hole should be made 6-10 mm
larger than the diameter of the indented
portion of the bolt and not less than
10 mm deeper than the portion to be,
embedded. The prepared grouting mixture should then be poured into the
hole and the bolt inserted. The top of
the bolt should be tapped lightly whilst
rotating it to exclude any trapped air.
It is important that the grouting compound is allowed to set thoroughly
before the bolt is loaded.

engineering

idustry.
)etails of our stock range are available

T his further extension to the range

would make it prohibitive to continue
to maintain all the imperial sizes
currently stocked and the following
timetable of change is being implemented.
High tensile precision
bolts,
screws, and nuts - BS.1083 B.S.F./B.S.W.
These were declared non-preferred on
the 1st January, 1974, and were
removed from the stock range. These
products will only be manufactured in
economic quantities and will become
difficult to obtain and certainly more
expensive.
Cup square bolts Ft nuts- B.S.W.
This range has now been phased out
and only metric bolts and nuts are
available from stock.
Indented foundation bolts and
nuts- B.S.W.
The imperial range has also been
phased out and only metric bolts and
nuts are available from stock.

Units
It will be noted that strength grades
are specified in metric 'technical' units
(kgf/mm'). This is in accordance with
present

continental

practice.

How-

ever, agreement has now been reached

to use S. I units (N/mm z )- (the correct
unit in the coherent S.1 system) and it
is hoped such units will eventually
supercede 'technical' units. S.I units
have therefore been used. (1 kgf =
9.81 Newtons).
Technical service
We provide an advisory service backed
up by the technical resources of the
worlds major fastener manufacturer.
Further information
This can be obtained from our Technical Sales Department, GKN Bolts and
Nuts Limited, Standard Bolt and Nut
Division, P.O. Box 12, Kings Hill,
Wednesbury, West Midlands,
WS10 7SJ.

Black hexagon bolts, screws, and

nuts- BS.916- B.S.W.
These will be declared non-preferred
during 1975. During this interim period
those companies who have not yet
gone metric should begin to plan and
introduce their change over to metric.
The cost of not going metric can only
increase, as the bolt and nut industry
accelerate their changeover to metric
products. The above timetable is in
accordance with the policy of the
British Bolt, Nut, Screw and Rivet
Federation.

To meet the needs of the Engineering Industry, rapidly progres

g through its
changeover programme, GKN Bolts and Nuts Limited are addi
ir range of Grad
8-8 High Tensile Bolts, Nuts and Screws (to BS 3
manufacturing
stock a range
of ISO-Metric black hexagon bolts, screws and nu
to BS 4190) and a range of .
ISO-Metric High Strength Friction Grip Bolts (to
5).
ISO-Metric threads
The ISO-Metric thread derives from
the S.I. (Systeme Internationale)
thread which originated as the result
of an international conference in
Zurich in 1898. This thread was
subsequently modified, the root
radius being increased to improve
fatigue strength. The present
andard, BS.3643 has been based on
Ene post-war work of the ISOTechnical Committee ISO/TC 1,
Screw threads, and is published in
three parts ; Part I gives particulars of
the ISO Basic Thread Profile and
standard diameter/pitchcombinations,
Part 11 limits and tolerances for coarse
pitch series threads, and Part III for
fine pitch threads.
The B.S.I. in its policy statement on
screw threads strongly recommends
that "BRITISH INDUSTRY SHOULD
ADOPT THE ISO-METRIC SCREW
THREAD SYSTEM".
n easons for going metric
The Metric system is simple and
coherent, and its use will simplify
design and production. 75% of the
world's nations use it, 85% of the
world's population live in Metric
-ountries, 75% of world trade is
,etric and over 60% of British
exports go to Metric countries.
Metrication offers important additional
benefits in the form of component
standardization and variety reduction,
which are particular y important in the
field of screwed fasteners.

Variety reduction
There are live Imperial threads in
regular use in the U.K. These can be
replaced by a single ISO-METRIC
coarse thread, thus replacing 40 sizes
by 7 between diamcters M6 and M24.
The resultant economies of storage
distribution and Volume production
will offset the initial expenses of
changing to the new system. Not only
should designers choose the 1-10Metric coarse thread but they should
alls'o "think Metric" and c666se
p referred lengths and diameters
rather than simply convert from past
hriperial size requirements.

Coarse and fine threads

It is our intention to manufacture for
stock, only ISO-Metric coarse threads.
This is finer than B.S.W. but not as
fine as B.S.F. Its tensile stress area is
only slightly less than that of B.S.F.
and in the majority of cases Metric
coarse can be substituted for both.
Although there are several valid
reasons for*specifying a fine thread
their advantages are outweighed by
those of a coarse one, which is
stronger, more robust, provides more
room for plating, is less affected by
corrosion and high temperature,
assembles easier and quicker and
eliminates cross threading, Fine
threads will therefore only be available
to special order and their use
discouraged if possible.
Length of thread
The length of thread for each
diameter of bolt appears in the chart
overleaf. It will be nct- `_- :n
diameters M1 6-M27 (lengths LID to
125 mm) of black bolts to BS.4190
the length of thread is reduced to 1 f
times the fzo!t diameter. This is
because the shorter thread length is
required for structural applications.
Units
It will be noted that strength grades
are specified in Metric "technical"
units (kgf/mm'). This is in
accordance with present continental
practice. However, agreement has
now bpen reached to use S.I. Units
(N/mm2) (the correct unit in the
coherent S.I. system) and it is hoped
such units will eventually supersede
"technical" units. S.I. units have
therefore been added. (1 kgf = 9 -81
Newton.)

Identification
Mptric bolts and nuts are marked on
the head (or non bearing face of the
nLt). Some users have suggested
tliit ISO Metric products be coloured
fcrtmore ready identification.
Uirfortunately lacquering or dyeing is
net only expensive but, can lead to
adierse tightening characteristics.
Tha only acceptable method is zinc
pliting and yellow chromate
prmsivation but this involves
adJitional cost and is neither
rerommended nor recessary.
Ataillability and,service
Gf,N ISO-METRIC fasteners are
miTketed primarily through our
amTedited stockholder network which
offirs "off the shelf" service.
Ths will be Supported by the advisory
and technical resources of the
wuld's major fastener manufacturei.
