EMPLOYABILITY OF MANAGEMENT (MBA) GRADUATES UNDER PUNE
UNIVERSITY
ii) Introduction
Origin of the research problem:
Employability is defined as the acquisition of skills, which not only help in
landing a job but also allow a person to remain employable. This research work will
analyse the reasons for the dearth of employable talent in the Management Colleges
under Pune University. While a lot is being spoken about the industry- academia
collaboration and bridging the gap between the industry expectations and the output of
talent from academia, this initiative is a definite step in the right direction to empower the
talent pool with employability
Employability skills are very essential in the current global job market. These
skills can be termed as Professional skills, which are given utmost importance in campus
interview. At college level, it will be a productive venture to incorporate these skills in
the syllabus. Soft Skills such as communication and negotiation; team working and interdisciplinary working; and planning, costing and other key business process skills are vital
for industry. Graduates with these skills are highly attractive to industry.

A major skill gap exists between the academia and industry for the employability
of -Management aspirants making a strong case for more focus on employability and
quality.
There are approximately more than 12000 MBA graduates passing out every year
from Pune University. It has been observed that about 40% students get placed through
campus placements. This brings out attention why other 60% are not employable. The
research work would like to bring out various facts in making these graduates employable
and industry ready. For the academia, an issue related to employability of Management
graduates is really a concern.

Interdisciplinary relevance:Main research work deals with Human Resource Management as it enhances its
primary functions viz., personality and attitude , motivation, Training and development ,
change management amongst the people concerned. The research work also helps in
identifying issues in leadership, decision making and staffing. One more aspect the study
is expected to focus is education and awareness of the people involved with respect to
their social responsibilities.

Significance of the research:

Although Management education received much attention in India ever since
independence, it is only since last few decades, Management education has expanded
remarkably as indicated by rapidly increasing number of Management institutions,
massive increase in the students admissions, increase in number of Management
disciplines. The basic components of a institute are the students, the infrastructure, the
teachers, the curriculum, the teaching and learning aids, the linkage mechanism with
industry-institute and other user system, the management system, the support services
system, the guidance and counseling, the internal and external evaluation system, the
feedback system etc. There are other important components viz, way of teaching, the way
the students learning, students activities beyond the regular time table, the motivation of
both faculty and students, attitude of the management, the overall academic climate, the
opportunities and encouragement for innovations and creativity, research and
development, the openness of communications, the leadership qualities of head of
institutions and of departments, the sense of involvement in providing quality services,
the organization structure, the quality of team work, the reward and recognition system,
the faculty development program, the appraisal system, the clarity in the vision and
objectives of the organization.
These changes are vital to the nations industrial strength and to the ability of
Management graduates to serve as technology and policy decision makers.
To make the students more employable, following student and staff quality factors need
to be taken into consideration.
Factors to be considered for student quality:

It is very essential to find out number of students taking admission for the
course and number of students completing degree

Competition is increasing day by day. It is a great concern how much time

is taken by student to complete the course. This affects the passing percentage of
students with higher class, the morale, confidence and attitude of student towards
employment in future

The students participation in research and Development , self learning and

self initiative attitude help to bring out Design engineers and successful
entrepreneurs from the educational institutes. This requires the institute taking
Research and Development , consultancy with industries along with funding
projects from Universities and Government

It is essential to find out how well the student is placed , what profile
student is holding and salaries earned on graduation. The education expenditure
for earning degree while learning from private institute is very high. Parents and
students have great aspirations of getting good jobs but it may not be a reality.

The institutes should verify number of students registering in placement

cell and number of students recruited by reputed companies. The more the
employability and qualities of students , the higher is the placement. This
increases satisfaction levels of students and employers.

Many students seek admission for post-graduate studies and few become
entrepreneur. The social and regional progress takes place only when we have
good number of graduates going for entrepreneurship or getting jobs in the region

The quality of students can be measured with the reputation of graduates

and alumni, nationally and internationally. It is very essential for the institutes to
encourage role of alumni in the professional development of graduates.
Factors to be considered for faculty quality

It is essential to find out quality and number of applications for faculty

position, at different levels

Faculties academic quality is measured in terms of publications, honors,

awards, patents, sponsored projects and consultancy.

The satisfaction level of faculties depends on many reasons. The more

faculties are satisfied the less is turnover. Hence there is improvement in teaching
quality, research activities, consultancies and involvement in professional society
and public service. This improves understanding of faculties towards industries
that will help in creating good employable graduates.
Factors o be considered for institutional quality:

The management support , well strategic planning and good industry

institute interaction help in the growth of institutes and bringing out more number
of employable graduates from the institutes.

Utilization of Government and university funding, good infrastructure and

financial support for research and development for continuing education will
surely help to make professional graduates industry ready.

The institute should consider adjunct appointments with Industry and inert
disciplinary activities

Interaction with the environment, industry, profession, community.

The study is expected to give following results :
It will identify Multi-perspective Requirements of Management graduates
with focus on Industry Relevance
It will bring out changing role of faculty and alumni for improving
employability of Management graduates
It will also bring out the facts of quality education and also the Management
aspirants to be industry ready and learn their skills in institutes itself along
with their regular curriculum.
iii) Objectives of the Study:

encouraging industry institute interaction
