HIGHER EDUCATION IN HUNGARY

Hungarian higher education has a long history, dating
back to the 14th century. The countrys first university was
founded in 1367 in Pcs, around the same time as other central
European universities, such as those in Prague, Krakow
and Vienna. Due to the expansion of higher education in the
last two decades, the number of enrolled students and the
capacity of the institutions have increased considerably.
Degree structure
In accordance with the common European higher
education principles Hungary introduced the three cycle
degree structure in 2006 (BA/BSc, MA/MSc, PhD/
DLA). The first degree programmes (3 to 4 years) lead to
Baccalaureus/Bachelors
degrees,
while
second
degree programmes (1 to 2 years) lead to Magister/Masters
degrees. Unified, undivided, long-term Masters degree
programmes (5 to 6 years) are offered in some fields of study
leading to a first degree but equivalent to a MA/MSc degree.
All Bachelors and Masters degrees grant access to the labour
market. Based on a Magister/Masters degree or its foreign
equivalent, PhD or Doctor of Liberal Arts (DLA) degrees as
third cycle degrees can be awarded after 3 years of study.
There are a few fields of tertiary education (e.g. law and
medical studies) where undivided long programmes have
remained the standard form of study (10 to 12 semesters)
All BA and MA degrees grant access to the labour market.
Hungarian diplomas have a high prestige throughout the world.
THE CAMPUS HUNGARY PROGRAMME

The Campus Hungary Programme aims at promoting,
supporting and enhancing international student mobility
in Hungary, with a view to having a growing number of
international students studying in Hungary and more
Hungarian students studying abroad. The programme aims
to help incoming and outgoing students, and also to provide
them with related information. Campus Hungary is part of
the National Excellence Programme, which was launched
in 2012 to motivate and promote recognition of the quality
of Hungarys higher education. The Campus Hungary
Programme Office is a department of the Balassi Institute.
The StudyFinder Database maintained by the Campus
Hungary Programme and by the Hungarian higher education
institutions provides information about over 400 study
programmes in English and in other foreign languages offered
by Hungarian higher education institutions. Browse through

The Central Hungarian Region

The Northern Hungarian Region

It borders Slovakia in the north and Ukraine in the east. It

The Southern Plains Region

It is the largest region in the country. Nature in the region
offers outstanding opportunities for water-, hiking-,
cycling-, riding-, hunting-, fishing, and eco-tourism. Places
of cultural heritage, remarkable sights, and walking tour
routes offer a wide range of choices to tourists coming here.
Bcs-Kiskun County has natural resources protected
by Kiskunsg National Park and Duna-Drva National

The Western Transdanubian Region

Here you can find the Duna-Drva National Park, which
is compounded of Europes largest unbroken flood area
habitats. The mountainous areas with their protacted
geological and botanical rarities are favourite targets of
hikers. Among its long-existing medicinal and thermal baths

mentioned. Local viniculture has a centuries-old tradition.
The centre of the region, and the European Capital of Culture
in 2010, is Pcs, which is famous for its arts festivals and
artists. The oldest place of architecture in the city is the one
with the burial vaults of early Christians, which has been
part of World Heritage Sites since 2000.
University of Pcs
Hungarys first university (1367)
The University of Pcs is Hungarys first university, it was
established in 1367. With its 22.000 students it is one of the
largest institutions in the higher education of the country. PTE
is among the best universities at internationalisation offering
nearly 50 degree courses and preparatory courses in English
and German to foreign students. At present more than 2200
foreign students from 70 countries are studying at our place.
