Lesson Title: Being a Good Citizen

Materials Needed: Book: Being a Good Citizen: A Book About Citizenship by Mary Small, blank white
paper and coloring materials
Prerequisite Skills: listening and writing/drawing
Standard(s): NCSS: 10. Civic Ideals & Practices, 4. Individual Development & Identity
SS.35.PSCL.1 Understand the rights and responsibilities of each citizen and demonstrate the value of
lifelong civic action.
Lesson Objective(s):
Students will be able to show that they know what it means to be a good citizen by drawing or
writing about it.
1. Provide objectives: (What are students going to learn?) Time: 1 min
I can think of and explain or show different ways a person could be a good citizen of their country and
how it is beneficial to that community, country, or our world.
2. Demonstrate knowledge or skill: (Input/Modeling by the teacher)
Time: 5 min
Today we will be talking about citizenship. What does it mean to be a citizen?
Give definition of a citizen or citizenship: someone who lives and belongs to a certain country.
I am a citizen of the United States because I was born here and I live here.
Talk about friend whose family was American but were living and working in Mexico for a few years,
so he had dual citizenship for a while.
It is easy to be a citizen if you are born in a country, but sometimes it can be tricky for people who
move here to gain citizenship because they have to take a test and stuff.
3. Provide guided practice: (Guided practice with the teacher)
Time: 10 min
Read the back cover of the book and take 5 answers of what students already think might be some
ways you can be a good citizen.
We will find out ways as we read this book but I want to know what you are already thinking. Im not
going to tell you if you are right or wrong but I want to hear your thoughts before we start! What are
some ways you can be a good citizen?
Call on 3 or 5 people.
Read aloud the book: Being a Good Citizen: A Book About Citizenship by Mary Small
Before you start, tell the students you want them to focus on the reading strategy of questioning. Ask
yourself a question like that person did this and it made them a good citizen why? Give example
by turning to page 13 and read Stacy picks up the trash from the ground and throws it away even
tough it is not hers. She is being a good citizen. And think aloud

why does this make her a good citizen? OH I KNOW because littering and throwing trash on the
ground pollutes our earth and we dont want that to happen. By picking up others trash and making
sure they she doesnt litter she is making the environment a better place to live!
4. Check for understanding and provide student feedback: (How will you know students
understand the skill or concept? How will they know they get it?)? Time: 5min
Stop and ask questions periodically to make sure students are engaged and thinking about being a
good citizen
Why might this act make this person a good citizen?
After reading, ask all students to think of a way that they could be a good citizen. Thumbs up when
you have something, Okay now whisper it to your neighbor.
It sounds like you all have at least one idea! So let me tell you what we are going to do
5: Provide extended practice and transfer: (Independent practice of the skill) Time: 15 min
Tell them they have a choice of either drawing a picture of what it means to be a good citizen or
writing AT LEAST one good, complete sentence, OR do a combination of some writing and some
drawing.
Have them go back to their seats and pass out blank white paper and encourage them to pull out their
coloring utensils.
6. Assessment / Closure: (How do you evaluate student progress or provide closure to this lesson?)
Time: 5 min
Show some of the students work on the doc camera
Emphasize key idea that Being a good citizen means you are helping your country be the best that it
can be. So even if it is something small like cleaning a spill so no one slips or picking up trash, you are
helping. It seems small but if EVERYONE does their part, then we all benefit all over the world!
7. Plans for differentiation:
Choice of how they do the assignment is differentiated to each learners abilities as long as they meet
the criteria of writing or drawing an act of being a good citizen, and it is clear they spent some time on
it, they will get credit.
TOTAL LESSON TIME: ___40 min___
