INTEGRATED
Columbus Atheneum
Semester: Fall 2014
Location: Columbus, Indiana
Emphasis: Integration of natural
light control, structure,
envelope, and HVAC.
Duration: Three months
Program: Temporary Exhibit Hall,
Permanent Exhibit Hall,
Archives, Restoration
space, Theatre, Cafe,
Library, sculpture gardens,
and guest artists housing.
Response: Because our site was
a long, narrow lot with
minimal southern exposure
and a parking garage to
the west, the project
emphasizes natural light
from the expansive East
facade. Galleries are
located south, with
functions organized with
increasing privacy to the
North and in upper floors.
Integration: Columns, HVAC
equipment, and lighting are
housed in the stone-panel
clad piers. These piers
provide the necessary
enclosure, support both
curtain walls and the
screening metal mesh, and
partition the interior space.
Light: Sight analysis of the surrounding area revealed that Washington Street (our east
facade) was a major pedestrian and vehicle route and the primary source of light for a
continuous procession of businesses which utilize large windows for pedestrian views
and daylighting, though most featured some type of light control.

Circulation: The activation of the East edge of the building occurs primarily through
circulation. On the cround floor, the stone-panel piers convert the massive exhibit floor into bays,
within which visitors ambulate around displays. On the third floor, the permanent gallery opens
to a patio divided from the street by the metal mesh screen, controlling sunlight and sound while
still offering an outdoor respite from the gallery for reflection both on the artwork and the activity
of Columbus.
Circulation for the rooftop sculpture garden (reserved for residences) similarly directs
visiting artists to circulate around and between skylights with views down into the permanent
gallery, with the common circulation lane along the East facade. This private vantage point
allows artists privacy to view the downtown activity and reflect on Columbus architecture.

Giovannis Restaurant
Semester: Spring 2014
Location: West Liberty, Kentucky
Duration: Half Semester
Partner: Elisa Padilla
Prompt: In September 2012, a
pair of tornadoes hit Monroe
County, KY, destroying 30%
of businesses in West
Liberty including the local
restaurant Giovannis. We
were tasked with bringing
back this community
favorite on a long, narrow
site, a characteristic
enhanced by the required
drive-through.
Design Response: More than
food, the community
lost a crucial experience
to the tornadoes: the
shared meal. When
imagining the new
Giovannis, we wanted to
emphasize the communal
nature of dining and the
facilitory role of the
restaurant to bringing
disparate elements together.

Site- Our site was a long, thin parcel visible from the main street,
though set back on a parallel road. The challenge became
5
how to feature a pleasant indoor dining experience despite
the narrowness of the site, exacerbated by the requirement
of a drive-through circumnavigating the restaraunt.

6
Interior Dining Experience- To facilitate community congregation despite the convenience of
the drive-through, we maximized flexibility and customization of the dining area. The
modular layout is easily reconfigured for large groups, and ceiling-mounted
descending screens provide separation from the buffet and other tables. In addition,
all dine-in customers for the first month are given a tile to decorate which will contribute
to the facade, allowing the community to mark their place in Giovannis.

ConStrata Market
Semester: Spring 2013
Location: Barcelona, Spain
Emphasis: Pedestrian Visibility
Duration: Full Semester
Partner: Stephen Renard
Prompt: A surgical intervention
of market and public space
for the rejuvenation of a site
in the Barcelonetta
neighborhood.
Operative Map: To enhance the
surprisingly low visibility of
our site, we identified 20
points- 10 by mapping
pedestrian traffic and 10
centroid of nearby public
spaces, and mapped high/
low visibility areas when
facing our site. We then
applied a response to each
condition, meant to attract
visual attention, and thus
attendance, to our market.

Projected Visibility
Four Systems: We identified a unique response to each visibility condition from the operative mapping process which would combine to
enhance the visual interest of previously ignored or under-utilized space. The result is a visual draw toward the market, particularly
through the new elevated footbridge, and the creation of two servant spaces, the Pavilion and the Plaza.

Natural Light: Circulation surrounds the courtyard for wayfinding and pleasant views, and includes the community

allow for north-facing clerestories, which receive pleasant ambient light with minimal heat gain.

Aspermont Elementary
Firm: CADCO Architects
Engineers, Inc.
Location: Abilene, TX
Contribution: Design of facades,
portico, and courtyard.
Design Considerations:
With exterior spaces
in Texas, particularly large
concrete surfaces where
children would spend
recess, heat was a
primary concern. With the
portico, a solid expanse
over the desired covered
area produced dark
corners and poor drainage.
Solution: Utilizing standard
dimension canopy structures
and concrete planters
provides low-cost, flexible
cooling and a dynamic
space for children to play.
Supporting the portico with cylindrical beams from the adjacent wall allowed light to enter the
darkest corners of the entry, while thick walls with columns above 8 mediated south light.
