The Brief

Considerations

Context & Target Audience

Solution

Design the editorial layout for a photography zine, titled

Beyond Kantaoui.

There are several considerations to take into account

for this project as it is a collaboration, whilst working
with someones photography.

Beyond Kantaoui is a project investigating the outer

edges of the tourist resort Port El Kantaoui in Tunisia.

An A5 full colour zine, emotionally telling the stories of

Kanataoui through photography.

Grid, layout, aesthetic, tone of voice and overall

structure of the publication are main considerations, as
well as use of photography to emotionally convey a
story behind the image.

The lavish hotels give an impression of stability and

wealth; this however is profoundly contradicted when
venturing beyond the tourist hub into local urban life.
Here the streets are often littered with waste, and
although there are few if any attempts at landscaping
or efforts to make the area aesthetically pleasing to the
people who live there, the endless roads lined by fields
of olive trees and freely roaming animals are hauntingly
ethereal, making such areas uniquely beautiful in a
way that the alien decadence of the tourist hotels and
resorts can never be.
This zine is aimed at those interested in Tunisian culture,
issues and topics, travel based photography and film
photography.

Evaluation
I really enjoyed working with Natalie, I felt we really
communicated well throughout the brief, whilst allowing
me to have a lot of control in regards to the design work,
and allowing me to suggest ideas at different stages of
development and feedback. Overall, I am really happy
with the simplistic outcome which showcases the
photography and messages and stories behind them
perfectly.

Research: Aesthetic Influence

Aesthetics & Tone of Voice

Natalie had informed me of the aesthetic and layout
design she felt would work the best for her photographs,
allowing for me to make this work. The examples above
were sent by Natalie to show the simple and minimal
template style layouts, whilst allowing the photography
to be of focus.

Provided Photography

Photography
42 images were provided by Natalie in Tunisia over the
course of 2 trips in January and April, which were taken
on 120 film, developed and then scanned in.
As the photography is so emotional and empathetic to
both the environment, the culture and its contradiction
to the tourist bays, it is important each remains
prominent and at large throughout.

Cover

Layout

The front cover, simply states the title Beyond Kantaoui

in the font Baskerville, remaining classic in contrast to
the photography giving a subtle hint of the contents.

Template style layouts have been created to form the

basis of the zine, whilst alternating in order throughout to
create a structured yet balanced layout and aesthetic.

Natalies logo has also been placed at the bottom of the

cover, keeping central also, adding a further personal
touch to the zine. Natalies full name has been included
on the opening page which also states the title.

This is due to the images needing major prominence

throughout the zine, allowing for a story to be visually
told in relation to the topic and contextual information
provided.
