IBM System x and BladeCenter Technical Conference - Chicago

A dynamic infrastructure is required to address todays needs

and lay the foundation for the future.
There are seven interrelated initiatives that
clients can evaluate and consider on their
journey towards building a dynamic
infrastructure.
The Energy Efficiency initiative aims to
address energy, environment, and
sustainability challenges and opportunities
across business and IT infrastructure.

If we can understand the basics of how and

where power and energy are used
throughout the IT and infrastructure, we can
identify areas of inefficiency, risk, and
overhead.
Understanding that the successful
implementation of a well designed energy
efficiency strategy has farther reaching
effects on the business than the efficiency
gains themselves starts us on this journey.

An Option For 2 x 30A Circuits on BCH

Equipment can wired based on actual power
consumption levels instead of label ratings
Customer has to perform a continuous 30 day power
measurement study as per National Electric Code
(NEC) in the US
This procedure is spelled out in detail in the NEC
section 220.87 Determining Existing Loads

19

2009 IBM Corporation

IBM System x and BladeCenter Technical Conference - Chicago

Excerpt - NEC Sec. 220.87 Determining Existing Loads

The calculation of a feeder or service load for existing installations shall be permitted
to use actual maximum demand to determine the existing load under all of the
following conditions:

20

1.

The maximum demand data is available for a 1-year period.

Exception: If the maximum demand data for a 1-year period is not available, the
calculated load shall be permitted to be based on the maximum demand
(measure of average power demand over a 15-minute period) continuously
recorded over a minimum 30-day period using a recording ammeter or
power meter connected to the highest loaded phase of the feeder or
service, based on the initial loading at the start of the recording. The
recording shall reflect the maximum demand of the feeder or service by
being taken when the building or space is occupied and shall include by
measurement or calculation the larger of the heating or cooling equipment
load, and other loads that may be periodic in nature due to seasonal or
similar conditions.

2.

The maximum demand at 125 percent plus the new load does not exceed the
ampacity of the conductor.

3.

The feeder has overcurrent protection in accordance with 240.4, and the service
has overload protections in accordance with 230.90.

2009 IBM Corporation

IBM System x and BladeCenter Technical Conference - Chicago

The Net of It
Item 1 we use the "30-day" exception process detailed on the
pervious slide
Item 2 is the standard "derating" applied to branch circuits.
IBMs System x PDUs and products meet the requirement
detailed in item 3

The customer needs to work with their electrician and local

authority of jurisdiction (i.e. local electrical inspector in most
cases) to insure wiring was done properly and legally
If the configuration changes after it is certified, it will have to
be tested again with this process and recertified
Note: Derating, in the context to above reference, is the limiting of load to 80% of capacity. For
example, if a circuit has a 30 amp capacity the 80% derated load capacity is 24 amps.
