Strathmore-Brooks proved once again

that it is a Wildrose riding.
Derek Fildebrandt, who began his campaign in January, received 8,657 of the
16,469 votes during the May 5 Provincial
Election.
The new MLA defeated his next closest competition, Progressive Conservative
Molly Douglas by a wide margin, winning
52.57 per cent of the total votes.
The heavy work is just getting started,
said Fildebrandt during a celebration at
his campaign headquarters in Strathmore
following the election. Im humbled and
exhilarated by the opportunity to be the
MLA for the people of Strathmore-Brooks.
This is a historical election this is only
the fourth time Alberta has ever changed
governments. Albertans wanted a change
Albertans did not vote for a democratic
socialist government, they voted for a new
government (in the NDP), but I believe
that the Wildrose Party stands for the values that have made Alberta great and can
make us greater in the future.
The NDP will form the new majority
government after collecting 51 of the 87
seats available. The Wildrose will be the
official opposition after taking 21 seats.
The out going PC party only garnered 10
seats.
We are going to provide a vigorous and
strong official opposition over the next
four years, said Fildebrandt. Im going to
do my upmost to represent the people of
Strathmore-Brooks and to blunt the more
extreme ideological excesses of the NDP,
which I believe has the potential to cripple the economy of this province.
Molly Douglass, who was named the PC
candidate after the resignation of Jason
Hale, received the second most votes in
the riding with 4,449.
Despite the result, she was proud to
take part in the democratic process.
It has been such a positive experience
getting to work with volunteers and getting
to know Strathmore and area residents,
said Douglass. Although I was not successful in my bid for the MLAs position, it
was a democratic process with seven parties and candidates in the running. What
more could a voter ask for? I am proud
of our Strathmore-Brooks region and its
people, and will continue to be involved at
the local level in moving it forward. Congratulations to everyone involved.

FCSS offers frozen meals program

A new meal program has come to
Strathmore that will make dinner-time a
little easier. The Frozen Meal program,
offered by Strathmore FCSS in conjunction with Calgary Meals on Wheels, allows people to purchase ready-made
frozen meals to stock their freezers.
Were finding that a lot of clients
dont want to use the hot meal program
because they dont feel like they need
it, but the frozen program is more flexible because you dont have to be home
for when its delivered, you can come
and pick it up on Wednesdays and then
its in your freezer and it lasts for up to
three months, said FCSS Programmer
Dahrlyne Knaus.
We were only able to do this because
weve received funding from the United
Way.
She said it provides a convenient option for residents, while remaining delicious and wholesome. Some of the options available are curry chicken legs,
roast beef with gravy, chicken noodle
soup, borscht, muffins, cookies and
much more. There are also family-size
items on the menu.
The meals are prepped at Calgarys
Meals on Wheels kitchen, and then volunteer drivers for FCSS head into the
city to pick them up and bring them
back to Strathmore.
Were looking for volunteer drivers
to drive in to Calgary bi-weekly, every
other Tuesday morning, to pick up our

meals to deliver them back here, said
Knaus.
Everything can be found online on the
Town of Strathmore website under the
Family and Community Support Services link. The full menu, and order form
can be found there. Orders can also be
phoned in, or faxed in. Payment is required when the orders are placed. The
next order date for Strathmore is May
12, and deliver will be on May 20.

events covered, each and every one different, and fun in its own way.

come back every once in awhile to visit, and to check out some of the events
I dont think Ill ever be able to leave
behind, like the rodeo.
My last official day in the office will
be May 11, so if you get a chance and
want to, come by and say goodbye. We
will have a gathering between 4 - 6:30
p.m. refreshments at the Strathmore
Times office.

Saying goodbye brings with it mixed
emotions, sadness at the thought of
leaving this great town behind and excitement about the new realm of possibilities opening up.

Wood casket prices are based on many factors.
The type of wood used, hardwood or softwood,
the polished finish of the wood, and veneer
versus solid wood. Cloth covered caskets
are made of various materials and are simply
covered in cloth. Hardware also plays a part
in the overall price of each type of casket.
Handles on the ends, more ornate handles and
corners, the type of interior bed of the casket,
the shape of the casket, and even the style of
lock, all affect the price. As a rule, the least
expensive is the cloth covered casket, wood and
steel caskets are comparable, and the copper
and bronze caskets will be most expensive.

Crowther Memorial High School, Strathmore High School
and Brentwood Elementary choirs celebrated a national event
in Music Monday on May 4 at Brentwood in recognition of
the power of music.
The choir events main focus was to educate the singers
about the true meaning of music and more importantly to
have fun.
Events like this are really important because they give us
the chance to show younger generations there are older students that are doing awesome things. It gives them something
to look up to, said Bryan Allsop, Crowther and Strathmore
High Schools choir teacher.
They can watch this and be like hey in five years I could
be in that high school group and it would be a ton of fun.
Allsop firmly believes that it depends on the group for the
type of genres the choir will sing to.
Our choirs do anything from pop music, musical songs to
classical choir stuff and weve done lots of songs in different
languages. It gives them versatility to be fantastic musicians
and all their wide knowledge as best they can, said Allsop.
The teaching styles for both groups are similar as they have
strong understandings of music.
For the most part I can teach them relatively the same. The
high school because its a class, you can be more intensive
with them, its outside the timetable, whereas at junior high
its just a club, they dont have the same intensity but I hand
out music to the groups and they have music by the next
week, said Allsop.
Brentwoods music specialist Carolyn Steeves could not
stress more how important it is to learn how powerful music
really is.
Ive been doing to this for 36 years, teaching music, and I
think days like today are really important for the kids to see
that music is a life-long thing. They can go into the junior high
and senior high, still dancing and singing and carry on what
they love, said Steeves.
Today for us was a dress rehearsal for provincials because
were in provincials on Friday representing Drumheller festival. Its Grades 4-6 classes at the Alberta Musical Festival
Association.
Steeves main goal for the kids is to have fun and enjoy what
music has to offer.
The kids loved the Music Monday song by Connor Ross,
he was 16 and won the music anthem search and taught it to
the kids in class. And to get to sing with other schools, a song
thats called We Are One, it cant get any more perfect than
that, said Steeves.

REMEMBERING OUR ROOTS ~Ken

The William and Mary Van Bavel family originated in Belgium, where they had five children,
and moved to Canada in 1910. Father Van Aken,
an agent for CPR, brought the Van Bavels to a location northeast of Strathmore, which in 1908 was
called the District of Akenstad. He was responsible
for assisting immigrants to start homesteading and
get employment. William got work constructing
the irrigation system for the CPR,
and later became a second ditch
rider, using a slip and a team of
Clydesdale horses, which he had
used in Belgium. When the ground
was frozen during the winter, the
ditch riders cared for the horses.
In 1917, William had purchased a
farm in the Elwood District, on the
Rockyford Road. But, before the
family could move there, he had a
fatal heart attack in the Strathmore
Hotel, and passed away at the
young age of 45, leaving his widow Mary with their five children:
Annie, identical twins Joe and Jack,
John and Kathleen. They did eventually move to the farm where the
boys did the farming. Joe and twin brother Jack
worked the family farm in the Elwood District as
partners for 10 years. Elizabeth Koester was born
in Iowa in 1911, moving with her family in 1929,
to Rockyford. She met and married Joe Van Bavel
(Kens father) in 1932.
Ken was born at Mrs. McKenzies Nursing home
in Strathmore on Feb. 23, 1934, the second oldest of six children. He attended school at Elwood,
Akenstead and Strathmore. He then worked on an
uncles farm at Rockyford.
Ruths grandfather, James Henry Sammons was
born Feb. 3, 1871 in Vinton, Iowa and married Jen-
& Ruth Van Bavel
ny May Rarey on Sept. 7 1897, in Greswald, Iowa.

In 1908, grandfather James Henry came to the
Strathmore area where he purchased land from
the CPR, before returning to Iowa. In 1910, he
brought his family, including four children, to the
Gleichen farm. Two more children were born here.
Ruths father Floyd had been born in Pottowattomie County, Iowa in 1906, so was four years old
when he came to Canada. Im told that when Floyd
was 98 years old, he could still tell you where he
was born!
Ruths great-grandfather on her mothers side
was James C Hutchison born in
Ormiston, Que. in 1862. He moved
to Morris, Ill. and dairy farmed
there for 35 years, marrying Barbara Cavers in 1908, then moving
to Gleichen in 1913 to land he purchased from the CPR. Her grandfather James Walter Hutchison, born
Nov. 22, 1887, married Emma L.
Page on Sept. 8, 1908. He hauled
gravel during construction of the
High Level Bridge in Edmonton,
before moving back to his Gleichen
farm in 1914. Ruths mother Lillian
was born at Morris, Ill. on Feb. 12,
1910. Ruth was born May 29, 1938
on the family farm at Gleichen, the
second of two children. She attended Cluny School
from Grade 1 to Grade 10 then worked for the
Bank of Nova Scotia in Calgary, before moving to
the CIBC in Gleichen where she worked for 10
years.
Ken and Ruth met while Ken was working for
Albert Desmet, and they were married on June 1,
1957. They have four sons and two daughters, and
now have 10 grandchildren and 10 great-grandchildren. Following their marriage they took over
the Hutchison family farm which was three miles
north of Gleichen, and farmed it for the next 40
years, before selling it in 2000, and retiring to
Golf for a cause

Sometimes we all could use a helping hand; an
unexpected bill comes in, or the hours just arent
coming like they used to at work. Cancorp Property Group, the Developer of Wildflower Ranch,
knows that people sometimes fall on hard times,
and have created the Wildflower Ranch Community
Support Foundation.
The foundation was set up to give back to any
Strathmore residents in need. One example is a senior who applied for financial assistance to help
build a wheelchair ramp to her door; the government wouldnt cover it, so the foundation did. Another person was unable to afford their prescriptions, and so the foundation stepped up to help
them out.
(Its usually) things that dont really get covered
by government agencies. We do an application online, and then we review it as a board and decide
on every case based on each case separately, said

Cassandra Cook, a member of the board of directors.
We only usually fund people who have a plan
so that its not just going to waste, thats what we
want to avoid, its not like a welfare kind of thing,
were just trying to help people who had a rough
go. We do everything directly, so we dont actually
give people cheques.
One of the ways the foundation is able to do this
is by fundraising, which they do through their annual golf tournament.
Over the past five years approximately $40,000
has been raised for the foundation. The tournament takes place on July 29, with a shotgun start
at 2 p.m. Following the tournament there will be
a dinner and awards show. Registrations fees are
$150 and include the green fees, cart, dinner and
prizes. Sponsors for are also being sought by the

brother Jim Sammon, with son David.
Their community activities included - Ken was a member
of Gleichen Lions Club, Branch #13 of the Gleichen Legion
#13, the Curling Club, and enjoyed hockey and baseball. Ruth
worked with 4-H Sewing Club. Ruth now volunteers at the
Strathmore Legion every Wednesday evening, as a member of
the bingo committee.
There were 6,990 residents when they moved here in the
spring of 2000. The greatest changes are the new technologies for farming.

out to be a fisher of men by Jesus, but after He was crucified,
Peter went back to being a fisherman, because that was all he
knew and all his hope was gone
when his beloved Savior died.
Yet Jesus appeared to him once
again. Peter dove out of the boat
to greet Him and Jesus restores

him and once again affirms his

destiny and future. Peter goes on
to become one of the greatest
disciples. He writes part of the
New Testament and becomes
so anointed that God uses even
his shadow to heal people as he
walks by them.
Had Peter chosen to focus on
his past failures, he would never
had been able to move ahead
with the new. We cant drive too
far ahead if we are only looking
in the rear view mirror. Everyone
makes mistakes, but the good
news is that when we lay them
down at Jesus feet and receive
Him, He doesnt look at all our
failures, He sees our future
potential and wants us to go for
that.
Dont let the past or fear of
failure keep you from moving
ahead. Let this spring be a time
of new beginnings. Let new
ideas, hope and excitement
sprout and keep looking ahead
instead of in the rear view mirror.

the auditors report to town
council April 15. He presented
the highlights from the report,
and stated that it was a clean
audit.
Some of the highlights could
be found in financial assets,
which are cash and assets that
will be converted into cash; they
totaled $25,193,000, which is
up slightly from last years $24.5
million.
Significant changes are cash
is down a little bit, but investments are up more than that
amount so some cash has been
taken from short term investments or cash input into long
term investments, said Adam-
son. Additionally some cash has

been used to pay off long term
debt, and some has been invested in capital assets.
Financial assets are up slightly, mostly because investments
are up. Liabilities total about
$18.1 million compared to last
years $20.4 million. Adamson
said the biggest reason for that
is the long-term debt repayment
which totaled about $4.2 million
for the year.
When you take the financial
assets and subtract liabilities
you get net financial assets,
which was a little over $7 million. Adamson said thats one
of the indicators of the towns
financial position, its a good improvement over the prior year.
Non-financial assets, which is
largely tangible capital assets
- infrastructure owned by the
town has gone down slightly

from last year. The town did invest $1.5 million in new capital
assets over the year, but amortized approximately $4.1 million
overall.
The total accumulated surplus
is $183,028,002. The breakdown
of that figure shows that $165
million is invested in tangible
capital assets, money already
spent and invested in infrastructure, and the remainder is
available for future spending,
approximately $18 million. $8.3
million of that is unrestricted
and can be used towards the
greatest need, and a little over
$10 million has been set aside
in specific reserves for operating
and capital needs for the town.

The Standard One Stop Shoe Shop is a business
owned and operated by Kelly Warrack and Katelyn Haffner. The store opened on Feb. 13 of this
year, in the old Standard building located at 136
Second Ave., across from The Bank Athletic Club.
The store offers a variety of
family footwear, as well as accessories ranging from handbags to laces, shoe care products and anything from the
waist down. The store stocks
well-known name brands
such as Nine West, Steve Madden, Toms, Geox, Converse
and more. The shop has everything for your feet ranging
from ladies high heels and
mens dress shoes to unique
boots and childrens footwear.
When asked what the best part about owning a
business in Strathmore was, Haffner replied that
they are helping contribute to the revitalization
that is happening downtown. She also expressed
that they feel that bringing a shoe store to Strathmore is filling a need that has been around for
over a decade. The Standard Shoe Shop is important to the town because it is bringing the ease of
access to quality shoes within walking distance of
your home.
To top it off, the building the store is located in
has a rich history and roots dating back to its construction in 1909. The building itself has undergone an inside-and-out restoration, but still has
the original features like the
day safe, and even the full
size vault.
When you visit the store,
take a moment to look at
the interesting artifacts they
found while renovating
like the newspaper they
framed from the 1920s. The
owners are willing to share
what they have learned
about the building and its
history just ask!

The Emergency Pregnancy Care Centre

The emergency Pregnancy Care Centre is a facility that helps women and men through an unplanned pregnancy. The facility was first introduced to the community of Strathmore in October
of 2014. It is located in the Aztec building in the
downtown area of Strathmore, on the second floor.
This non-profit organization focuses on crisis pregnancy and sexual health education. The Pregnancy
Care Centre is completely composed of trained volunteers, so it is not a professional facility, but the
volunteers have received extensive training and
have gained a significant amount of experience.
The Pregnancy Care Centre has a program called
Take Charge which travels to schools (targeting
grade 7 to CALM class in high schools). The class
teaches about healthy relationships, good boundaries, good connections, STIs, pregnancy, and the
dangers of sexting. This allows children and youth
to become educated in decisions for their relationships in the future. SAY has been involved in one
short session and all of our youth members thought
that the information, activities, and presenter were
excellent. The youth in SAY said that they learned
new things about healthy relationships that they
will use in their everyday lives.
While education is a key component of the Pregnancy Care Centres services, their main purpose is
to help anyone in need of assistance during a cri-
sis pregnancy. The facility provides free pregnancy

tests, counselling, and support to women experiencing a pregnancy and/or their partners.
When a new client comes in they are told that
the entire process is confidential and will not be
shared with anyone outside of the client and the
councillor. The client is then presented with his/
her options, which include parenting, adopting, or
abortion. After the options are presented the client learns about the risks of each option. Once
the client has chosen an option they are presented
with ongoing supports and are guided through the
process. The councillors do not give any of their
opinions; in fact a survey of Pregnancy Care Centre clients was taken to determine whether they
could determine their councillors opinions and
the results were that 96% did not know their councillors opinions.
To round out their comprehensive list of services, the Pregnancy Care Centre offers many counselling opportunities, including male counselling
and couples counselling. They also offer numerous courses, such as parenting classes, adoption
classes, and a birth mother support group for the
adoption process.

The second annual Hope
Bridges Society art auction fundraiser, the Art of Connection,
was a success. After expenses
the society - which is a charitable organization - was able to
raise $8,000.
It was a full house, it was
packed, you could hardly move
in there, so it was great, said
Hope Bridges Coordinator Wanda Reinholdt.
There was a total of 76 items
donated by artists and business-
es that were sold off in either

a live or silent auction fashion.
The most memorable is 18
cookies for $230 and it was Geordies cookies, said Reinholdt.
The top selling item was a
basket of wine, which sold for
$575. The mural Flight, which
was created from plastic cards
and an old door, was also resold at the auction. There is talk
that the piece will be moving to
its new home at the Wheatland
County offices.
Without the generous support of our community of donors and guests supporting our
fundraising efforts, we could

not do the work that we do. We
are continuing our fundraising
campaign, so if you were unable to attend our event, please

Fule for Thought
So, it was spring budget time for town council
this past weekend. Its a time to make decisions
for the future, fund new projects that have arisen,
set goals, and learn more about what large projects are on the horizon for the future.
I was telling one of my English classes about
it, and that Id be busy Friday night, all day Saturday, and Sunday morning. I was trying to hint
that their English essays may not get marked, and
then I joked that maybe I could slip in buying a
tractor if they needed one! I found out that you
should not joke about these things, because kids
believe you!
One student came up and asked, can you really get me a tractor, cuz my dad needs one for
our farm.
Oh no, Im so sorry, I replied. I was just joking, if I tried that, Id get run out of town or
worse!
He seemed disappointed, but I learned a lesson
about joking in politics!
During the budget process, we work through
a large binder, with budget items/staffing needs
separated by colored dividers with tabs.
Councillor Steve was having some problems as
we switched and moved through this binder. We
actually were trying to be helpful as we called out,
its behind the red divider, Steve, or try the blue
divider.
After a while, Steve finally reminded us, hey,
easy for you people, youre not color blind!
Crap thats when we realized every divider
looked the same no wonder he was struggling!
Going through these budget items got me thinking about other types of lists, and after a weekend of dealing with some pretty weighty issues, I
started to compile my own Worst of List.
So, feel free to agree or disagree with some
of these! I have listed my worst three things in
various categories. Maybe theyll bring back some
horrible memories you have! Now you may also
disagree, but we all have our own tastes!

Crowther Memorial Junior High School hosted a forum on May 1 for the political candidates as part
of Student Vote, which is a parallel election program that allows students under the voting age to
learn about government, and then cast a vote for their favourite party. The results from the student
election were: NDP 173 (votes); Wildrose 108; Green Party 91; Alberta Party 48; PC 47;
Liberal 33; Alberta First 4. According to the students, the NDP would be our government, with
the Wildrose as the official opposition.

Crowfoot Multi 4-H Club

The Crowfoot Multi 4-H club had its final meeting of the year on May 4, where we discussed setup for Achievement Day, which is taking place on
May 7, at Namaka Hall from 4:30 p.m. to 6 p.m.
Achievement Day starts May 8 at 5:30 p.m.
Many of Crowfoots members are going to 4-H
summer camp.
At the beginning of the meeting Jack Worth came
to speak to us about the Summer Games that will
be in Strathmore from July 16-19. He asked if there
were any member interested in volunteering and
many of us were, hope to see many of you at the
Summer Games
Members of our club attended the District Funday on April 26. Everyone had lots of fun, going
through an obstacle course and getting to roll
around in hamster balls.
Our club had our annual highway cleanup from
the 13-mile corner to Hussar on May 2. Thank you
to Kathy, and Dawn for making hotdogs and thank
you Susan for setting up the tables and chairs.
At the Dog Agility groups last meeting they continued to practice the dog agility course to prepare
for 4-H on Parade. Margo Comstock came out and
showed members the good neighbor course.
Members in the Outdoors Adventures group went

to paintballing in Calgary after highway cleanup on
May 2. Everyone in Outdoor Adventures had lots
of fun and many of our members left colourful, for
their final adventure everyone had a blast.
Archerys last meeting was on April 30, members
finished up their leatherwork projects and as they
finished they had some fun shooting arrows. On
May 3, my project Creative Options, finished off
my aprons.
A big thank you goes out to our 4-H leader Margo Comstock for being an amazing leader who is
always there to lend a helping hand and makes 4-H
just that much better, the Crowfoot Multi Club is really going to miss having you as our leader.

In celebration of International Day of Families on
May 15, the Strathmore Municipal Library is planning The Great Family Treasure Hunt.
When searching online for programming ideas
for May 15, which is a flex Friday for local schools,
Assistant Director of Library Services Carmen Erison came across info about the day, and began to
think of what type of program they could bring to
the library. Thats how the idea of the treasure hunt
was born.
The treasure map will include actual locations
of the items as well as GPS coordinates to bring
out that geocaching fun, adventure hunt into it as
well, said Erison.
She personally loves geocaching, and said its a
modern day treasure hunt, and that there are geocaches hidden everywhere in the world. Erison has
always wanted to incorporate some kind of treasure hunt type of program into the library.
This program is sponsored by the Strathmore
FCSS, who secured the grand prize, and some of
the other prizes, and sponsored advertising. The
hope is that families come in together, pick up
their treasure maps and start looking for clues.
They will find clues to treasures that will be hid-
den here in the Lambert Centre, the Lambert Park,

Kinsmen Park and parts of downtown Strathmore,
said Erison.
These will be challenging hunts, said Erison.
They wont be the type of treasure hunt that takes
about five minutes. It is the type of program in
which they are encouraging families to work together.
This here, with it being International Day of
Families, gave us a great opportunity to provide
a program like this. We do realize it is on the May
long weekend, so unfortunately we do understand
that some families might be heading off for camping, said Erison.
But we still think that its still worth it to do a
program like this because not everybody can afford
to go out of town and so this allows you to have
your own adventure within your town limits.
Taylor Hillier Photography has donated a mini
photo session, valued at $120, as the grand prize
for one lucky family that completes the hunt. It
includes a 30-minute shooting time, a location of
your choice in Strathmore, 10 edited images, and
one online gallery to view and download from.
The Great Family Treasure Hunt will run from
noon until 4 p.m. Other prizes for participating
families will include family pool passes and free
memberships to the library.
Wheatland 4-H District Annual Fun Day

The Wheatland 4-H District
held its annual Fun Day on April
26. The Jr. Council planned an
amazing day. Astro Jump from
Calgary brought out a Monster
climb and slide obstacle course,

a bungee run and eight bumper
balls.
There were 54 members from
six different clubs in the Wheatland area. The Jr. Council also
had minute to win it, rock painting and carry a water balloon
games for the members to do.

Everyone had a great time and
there were lots of laughs by the
members and the parents watching. The day ended with Pizza
from Dominos. A Big thank you
to Dominos for the great deal on
the tasty pizza.

Last month, April 3, Avery Aleman and
her teammates represented Canada in
the Sydney Royal Easter Show in Australia. Aleman is a member of the Canadian
Trick Riding Association and attended
the event with her fellow Canadian
Champions Cora Croteu (Sundre) and
Shelby Pierson (Cessford), who made
up Team Canada.
I really liked everything, everyone
was really nice and kind about everything and super excited for us to be
there, said Aleman.
I was disappointed that I missed my
vaults and fell face first but I guess that
is all part of it, the ground conditions
had changed from (when) we practiced
and I just hit the ground harder than I
expected.
Team Canada did well at the show,
which is one of Australias premier
events. Pierson won the Australia Open
Competition, Croteau placed second in
the Australian Youth Competition and
Aleman placed third in youth and won
the Stephanie Coldstream Encouragement Award.
The Stephanie Coldstream Encour-
agement award was an award for displaying overall encouragement, and

showing sportsmanship along with a
true love and desire for the sport - with
both the third place as well as the Coldstream award I received a sash, a buckle
and some money, said Aleman.
The Stephanie Coldstream award was
so meaningful and (it was) inspiring that
I was chosen. It was cool knowing her
story, that she trick rode with cancer
and (had) a love and a passion for the
sport that her family wants to carry on.
I have the utmost respect for Cora,
Avery and Shelby, at such a young age,
jumping on unfamiliar horses to trick
ride. I did this in Bermuda and Japan,
and it is no easy feat, said the girls
coach Jerri Duce in a press release.
I am so proud of their talent and professionalism. We could not have had better ambassadors to our sport. On behalf
of Ashley Furgeson and myself, it was
indeed an honour for us to coach these
athletes.
Aleman is now preparing for all of the
pro rodeos and other performances that
she has scheduled with Young Gunz
Trick Riding. She is also still busy training a few new horses, and said she looks
forward to Team Canada next year.

Celiacs disease is a clinical condition where gluten
(a protein found in wheat and other grains) damages
the surface of the intestinal walls so it cant absorb
nutrients from food. Symptoms include diarrhea,
bloating, weight loss, fatigue, cramps and irritability.
Eliminating all foods containing gluten proteins will
relieve symptoms if the problem is truly celiacs
disease.
There has been an increase in gluten-intolerance
during the past few years and more people seem to be
adopting a gluten-free diet to reduce the symptoms
mentioned above. However, these symptoms can be
caused by other medical problems. Check with your
doctor to determine the real cause of the problems.
During the past five years, the number of teens using
tanning parlours has dropped significantly. Perhaps
its due to fact that the World Health Organization
in 2009 openly declared that tanning devices caused
cancer. As well, several well-designed studies have
shown that indoor tanning increases the risk of skin
cancer.
The idea of a poly-pill has been around for about a
decade. Its a pill that combines 3-6 drugs into one
pill. It contains an cholesterol-lowering drug, ASA,
one or two blood pressure-lowering drugs. Its
designed to reduce the risk of heart attacks and
second heart attacks. This idea is not a reality yet.
There are a number of research studies being done
around the world but no polypill is forthcoming.

East Wheatland School continues to fundraise

The Friends of East Wheatland Society are looking for the
areas support for projects at the new school.
After having a sold-out fundraiser in Hussar on April 25,
there will be other events planned in the near future.
We had 300 people that we could invite and we had a
waiting list. It was all sold out it was terrific, so many people donated, said Sherri Skibsted, Friends of East Wheatland
committee member.
The committee will be hosting a movie night in June.
A company is donating the funds to put a projector out so
we can invite a whole bunch of people for a drive-in movie,
said Skibsted. As far as that, were trying to get as many
grants as we can apply for and were going to take it one day
at a time. Were going to do the outdoor one and were going
to see what else we can drum up.
The society has raised $125,000 towards their goal since
February, and is always looking for more fundraising ideas.
The Friends of East Wheatland Society have committed to
fundraise $500,000. Were the committee that is continually
thinking of ideas, if anyone brings us ideas, well definitely
look into it, said Skibsted. Its a group of parents in each
community. Theres some from Hussar, Rockyford, Standard
and Gleichen.
The parents intentions are to make it the best school it can
be for the kids.
The money fundraised will go to some important pieces
of the school.
Most of the money so far is going towards the gymnasium
with the square footage that we had said we wanted so we
could put bleachers in. If we go above and beyond (raising)
the $500,000, then theyre looking at putting in a black box
theatre for fine arts kids, said Skibsted.
Skibsted felt good about Wheatland Countys response to
their request at the meeting on April 21.
I definitely think we need more numbers. I felt very posi-
tive that they are just waiting for us to come up with a request because I feel the support from the county is there,
said Skibsted.
The main person spearheading the school, Greg Lendvay,
has seen a lot of progress and feels very confident that the
county will go through with the $1 million proposed for the
school.
I think it was well received. I think there has to be some
due diligence on our part and their part to see that there is
a long-term fit and collaboration of some sort, said Lendvay.
They were definitely in the right in terms of asking for a
facilities agreement, just to guarantee a long-term partnership and accessibility on both parties. I think there was an
genuine interest in something regionally thats more than
just a school, that incorporated all ages at all levels, including seniors.
Lendvay wants to ensure that whatever the structure of the
school may be, it is feasible and sustainable.
He predicts the committee will reach 50 per cent of their
fundraising goal by June. One way he thinks that could happen is if more major sponsors come on board with the project.
We could be looking at anything from a big corporate
sponsor to come on board to a public-private partnership
which someone could run in the non-school hours, said
Lendvay. Theres a number of different models that we can
explore and I think what we want to do is to engage the
stakeholders to see what they really want.
Lendvay is optimistic he will have a package of numbers
ready to be brought back to council some time in June.
Wheatland County Chief Administrative Officer Alan Parkin has received minimal information on existing schools
upgrades and the proposed numbers for the new facility.
I have received information in regards to the improvements that are needed on the existing schools and thats the
information Ive received thus far, said Parkin.
Parkin echoed that there has been no commitment on either side for the requested $1 million.

The Friends of East Wheatland raised
approximately $50,000 with their fundraising dinner, dance and auction on
April 25, at the Hussar Community
Hall.
The event was the latest in the groups
efforts to help cover the costs for enhancements for the new Kindergarten
to Grade 12 school being built in East
Wheatland. Located near the intersection of Highways 840 and 561, the new
school will serve the East Wheatland
area and the communities of Gleichen,
Hussar, Standard and Rockyford.
With 300 tickets sold for the event,
the Hussar Community Hall was filled
with supporters for the project, which
is already underway.
A highlight of the auction was the
sale of a photo taken by Jason Knibb
on the day of the groundbreaking. After some back and forth bidding, it was
purchased jointly by Wade and Lorilee
Dundas and East Wheatland School
Trustee Alan Larsen for $5,000, which
they donated back to be displayed in

New Hussar Fire Chief
Mike Hager is thrilled to
be taking on the challenge
of fire chief in the town he
grew up in.
He seems to be pretty organized since being appointed a month ago.
I was (acclaimed) fire
chief by our board of directors, our previous chief
had stepped down, so they
looked to me for leadership
and guidance, said Hager.
The biggest challenge for
volunteer fire departments
is recruiting and retaining
of members. Its not tough
to get them to volunteer, its
tough to get that commitment from them.
He says that firefighting
is not for everyone, considering additional tasks that
have to be done other than
fighting fires.
Were training once a
month, in business meeting
once a month, giving up time
here and there being away
from family is a big commitment for guys, said Hager.
The other aspect of it is
a lot of guys dont think its
for them.
Another task the fire department takes care of is

Wheatland EMS, and HSEMS
(health, safety, and environment management systems)
when they are in the area.
His intentions are to bring
a fresh look to the Hussar
Fire Department.
Id like to bring new
ideas. Im just younger, have
experience in EMS being a
paramedic and EMT for 15
years, said Hager.
The biggest difference in
going from deputy to fire
chief will be the administrative aspect.
Mostly the administrative
stuff, the financial side, that
aspect, said Hager. The
day-to-day stuff is pretty
easy, we got a great group
of guys, and their stuff gets
done.
The most exciting thing is
to get to know the guys and
showcase some new pieces
of equipment they have received.
We got a new rescue
truck in the last month and
a bush buggy last fall that
we havent put through the
paces, said Hager. Now
that the weather has turned,
were looking forward to
putting some water down.

Some of the ornamental Sages are mounding, others are upright in their growth habit all
having spikes of flowers. They range in size
from 30 to 60 cm.
Leaves are dark green or grey-green with
pronounced veins. Many have fragrant foliage.
Rated for zones 3 and 4, they like welldrained, alkaline soil in full sun. Making them
reliable and hardy plants for the Prairies. Sage
becomes drought tolerant with maturity.
Flowers develop in early to mid-summer.
Ranging from dark blue to pale violet and
pink. Hours of sunshine will impact flowering time. Deadheading will promote repeat
blooms ensuring flowers until fall on the
ornamental Sages.
The different sizes make them versatile in
garden borders, perennial and rock gardens
and pots. Maintain adequate moisture the first

While it might be tempting to lower mower blades when summer temperatures reach their
hottest, it is possible to cut grass too short. Homeowners who want to cut back on the time
they spend mowing their lawns under the hot summer sun should avoid lowering their
mower blades too low, as doing so can cause significant damage to the lawn. Lawns that
have been cut too low are less capable of surviving drought and are unlikely to thrive. When
grass is cut too short, the stem tissue from the grass is exposed, and that exposure can lead
to unsightly grass that turns yellow or brown. Grass that is cut too short also may suffer from
weaker roots, which in turn makes the grass weaker and less likely to grow in strong. In addition, weaker grass is more susceptible to weed growth, which can be both a nuisance and
an eyesore. When mowing, homeowners should remove no more than one-third of the grass

Garden-inspired decor brightens spaces and mood

Many homeowners take up gardening to transform their
homes with beautiful flowers and foliage, while others do
so to yield fresh fruits and vegetables. But gardening can
be more than just a weekend hobby. In fact, it may be especially beneficial for homeowners to surround themselves
with more plants and natural decor, whether in the yard or
in the home.
Studies have indicated that gardening can be good for
the mind and body. In addition to improving mood and
reducing stress, plant life and gardening also may help
people have a more hopeful outlook on life. If reaping the
benefit of a beautiful landscape is not reason enough to
get into gardening, elevating your mood and coping with
depression or illness may be even further motivation to
start developing your green thumb.
Home-design trends seem to be following suit, offering
individuals more opportunities to surround themselves
with potentially therapeutic plants. Explore these emerging
and established garden dcor trends to try in and around

Living wall planters: A living wall planter can add
greenery to any dcor without taking up floor or table
space. Ideal for outdoor structures, these planters also can

hour. Although flood lights and overhead lights can illuminate a space, consider ambient and decorative lighting to
create the desired ambiance.
Functional fire pits and places: A blazing fire creates
a cozy spot to gather on chilly evenings, but fire pits and
fireplaces also can be used as impromptu cooking spots
for smores or frankfurters on a stick. You can purchase a stand-alone

fire pit from any number of retailers or build your own with patio pavers and fire bricks to line the interior of the fire pit. Outdoor fireplaces
require more work, and you want to hire a mason to ensure proper

Superheroes to clean up Strathmore

Imagine dozens of superheroes running around picking up garbage and
other litter around the community.
Thats exactly the vision that Becky
Stone and Marci Hira had in mind when
they came up with the idea for the first
annual Strathmore Superhero Clean-up.
Hira pitched the idea to administration
and council at the April 15 town council meeting. She has recently moved to
Strathmore with her family, and had met
Stone through her yoga studio. The idea
behind the clean-up, besides beautifying
the town, would bring the schools, local
businesses and the community together.
We have to be proud of our town and
I think one of the things thats very important today is to teach our kids the
importance of our environment, and recycling and garbage and not littering,
said Hira.
The plan is to split the town into grids,
with participants being given a section
to clean over a three-hour window from
9 a.m. to 12 p.m.
The first day of the event for the
schools is on June 4, and there will be a
second Superhero Clean-up day for the
public on June 6.
Following the clean-up there will be a

BBQ lunch and entertainment.
There will also be prizes given out to
the groups for things like the most trash
picked up, the weirdest garbage, most
recycling, best photo, best school group
photo and more.
Hira said they are primarily targeting
the schools, mostly because they can do
it in teams and in larger classes. The participants will also get a document teaching the importance of cleaning up the
town, which they can then bring home
and talk to their parents about it.
Stone and Hira hope to see this become a tradition.
Ever since I moved back to Strathmore, I have been rather appalled at
the amount of litter around. With this
clean-up day, our intention is to generate a sense of community pride and individual ownership of our town and our
environment, said Stone.
We hope that by working together as
a community to spiff up our town, we
will instill a sense of responsibility in
ourselves and our youth - for who will
care for our world, if not us?
At the council meeting, Councillor
Bob Sobol said the town does a good
job cleaning up the parks, but said it is
the streets, ditches and the gutters that

drive him crazy, and is a matter he was

planning to bring it up about what can
be done as a municipality to resolve it.
This is such a great start and if we
can build some more awareness maybe
we can stop everybody from throwing
out their McDonalds or Tim Hortons
cups onto the ground, said Sobol. I
really think this is a great idea, and I
would like to propose that we look after
the advertising plus $1,500 as a support
for this project.
The motion to cover the cost of advertising, not to exceed $500, and the financial support of $1,500 was approved
by council.

Body, a new Canadian play opening in
Calgary May 13.
We are the Body follows the journey of three prisoners behind the Iron
Curtain in post-war Romania, Pattengale says. They are prisoners of conscience.
Pattengale, her fellow Rosebud graduate John McIvor, and Tim Bratton of
Saskatoon play the prisoners.
The story shares their time in the
prison and ... where their strength is
coming from, Pattengale says. It also
has flashbacks to their lives before they
were in prison.
Playwright Andrew Kooman, who
also wrote the award-winning She Has
a Name, drew inspiration for We are the
Body from the life of Richard Wurmbrand, who was imprisoned in Romania for more than 12 years in the 1950s
and 1960s. This play includes parts of
sermons Wurmbrand wrote in prison,
Pattengale says, but the events of the
play are fictitious.
She acknowledges the challenges of
performing a play with such heavy content.
Letting myself go to those dark places of despair, she says, its a tricky
thing to not carry that out of the rehearsal at the end of the day.
But the wonderful thing about the
way Andrew Kooman wrote (the play)
is that the piece doesnt actually leave
us there, she says. It says dont look
away. ... But dont despair either, because it doesnt have to be this way.
There is hope.
This plays unique story makes the
challenges especially worthwhile for

Pattengale, who studied both fine and
performing arts, and peace and conflict
studies, at university.
This is the first time Ive gotten to do
a show where the two are really closely
aligned, and thats exciting for me, she
says, especially with what is going on
in the world right now, when we think
of ISIS.
I dont think we can turn a blind eye
to the other people around the world
and the title of this show speaks to that.
We are the Body, she says. Were not
lone islands, so we have a responsibility to care for one another and to help
those who are suffering and to not forget them. And that makes me really excited because I can get behind that.
Pattengale says the play might make
some of us uncomfortable, but she
challenges us to come outside of our
comfort zones and see it. Thats actually where we learn, she says. Thats
what this play is about -- causing people to stop and think.
At the same time, she says, the story
also includes a lot of pure entertainment and joy.
She believes that people interested in
social justice will especially appreciate
this play, as will people of faith, and
everyone else who just enjoys a gripping story.
It takes us on a roller-coaster ride
that is full of laughter and emotion and
twists that are unexpected in the plot,
she says. However, this show is not recommended for children.
We are the Body is playing May 5 to
9 in Red Deer, and will run May 13 to
23 at Calgarys Pumphouse Theatres.

The Chaos club volleyball teams
have exceeded expectations on the
court in their inaugural season.
The U14 girls have showed resiliency on the court all season long
and it showed at provincials in Rally
Pointe in Calgary on April 18-19 and
the Ponoka tournament on April 1112.
We came in second at our provincials in the round robin and our
playoff round we won and that put
us into the gold side. We lost that
playoff game 15-13, which put us
in the fifth place game and everybody played, said Greg Appleyard.
Then the weekend before that we
played in Ponoka in an open tournament and we went unbeaten until
the gold medal round and we lost to
Sherwood Park, but the girls played
amazing.
He knows the upcoming international tournament in Okotoks will
be a true test to see where the girls
skill set stands.
Were playing all the Division 1
Calgary teams and to make sure we
really get a view of how we compete at that level, said Appleyard.
Then the team will compete in the
Nationals from May 14-19 in Calgary
where over 800 teams will be participating.
Im pretty excited to give these
girls the opportunity to experience
this, said Appleyard. Theres two
international matches happening
that the ladies team is playing Puerto Rico and the mens team will play
Cuba, which is for all these kids to
go watch and witness some of that

stuff is a lot of fun.

Appleyards goal at the beginning
of the season was to develop players, but with all the success thus far,
the team has exceeded expectations.
The expectation was to create
a development program in Strathmore because not everyone can
go to Calgary and try to play club
ball and trying to find a team, said
Appleyard. We were overwhelmed
with 27 girls trying out and we were
trying for 14 or 15 on the U14 side.
We practice 8-10 hours a week
and the growth in the girls has been
amazing, its all because of their effort and commitment. You touch a
ball that many times and we only
really got started the third week in
January, youll really see it going
into the school year in that the girls
have played so much.
He has seen many improvements
on the court as a result of the
amount of practice time the teams
have had.
The thing I try to entrench in
everybody is hardwork will always
beat talent, if talent doesnt work
hard and I talk about that all the
time, said Appleyard.
Meanwhile, the U13 girls played
just as well at their recent provincial
appearance.
Randell Breaker coached them,
I think they had fun at provincials
the same weekend, but they were in
Edmonton, said Appleyard.
He hopes that the girls will continue to bond well and compete
hard on the court.
The club will be holding development camps in August for those
who are interested in competing at
a U13 and U14 levels.

The Strathmore High School girls rugby team were hosts to the Smith Falls Redhawks of Ontario as
a part of a rugby exchange. The girls had fun practicing skills with one another at the high school on
April 30. To conclude the trip, both of the teams played in the Vulcan tournament on May 2.

girls rugby team went 6-0 on their rugby exchange down to Smith Falls, Ont.,
from April 23-28.
Despite not having the whole team
on the trip, coach Jerry Flaws liked how
the team was able to adapt to new positions.
I liked the fact that we didnt have
our complete starting line-up and we
had to move people around and yet we
were still able to get the job done, said
Flaws.
We did a clinic with the Queens University team and they basically broke
down some skills and (we) had a blast
seeing what higher end rugby players
look like.
I think they were most surprised at
how similar the rugby was out east as
it was out here. The skill set seemed to
be the same, the communication theyre
running are similar to what were running out here, so the game didnt
change all that much.
In every match, the girls steadily improved on the defensive side of the ball
and Flaws is hoping they will take that
into the rest of the season.
They really progressed on defense,
getting off the line a lot quicker and
limited what the other team could do,
said Flaws.
There were some things that the coach
could take out of the clinics that could
be brought back to teach the girls.
I definitely learned some new drills,
some stuff that can be easily done here.
As a coach it was neat to see how the

other coaches down east approach de fenses, said Flaws.
For Spartan Sarah Bruinsma, the trip
was a memory she will never forget as
she liked skills they were able to learn
from the experience from Queens play ers.
Honestly, learning from Queens, I
think the best part was tackling because
a lot of the girls were more timid, said
Bruinsma. But breaking it down step by-step, we dont have a lot of time to
do that, (and) doing that at Queens definitely helped.

came here a week later and did some
practices with the high school team and

The 2015 season is now underway
for the girls fastpitch softball and the
upcoming weekend, May 8-10, features
the fifth annual Mothers Day tourna ment at the Ag diamonds.
Fourteen teams will be in town, in
cluding the local Thunder Juniors in
the womens first event, and the U16
Thunder moving up to the second
event with the U18/19 teams as com petition. There is also a third event
with U16 visiting teams.
Friday night at 6:30 p.m. is when the
games get underway with U21 Juniors
going against the Medicine Hat league

team builders, as well as participating

in the Vulcan tournament on May 1 and
2.
The team does not travel often but
were really thrilled to have come to
Strathmore to get a taste of the western
culture.
They came down and played us because they have different tactics and
strategies than us. Them running at us
and doing different plays is cool because then we can learn from them,
said Kassie Warwick, the Redhawks
prop. Im excited to come down here
because itll be fun to play other teams
that we wouldnt have had the chance
to play before.
The Redhawks are a team that emphasizes teamwork and with an experienced rugby coach it has always been
done effectively.
I think were a good team, we work
together really well because weve been
playing together, said Warwick. Our
coach is strong and coaches a team in
Eastern Ontario, he knows a lot about
rugby and when we get new players, he
teaches them really well.
She was looking forward to a different culture when they made the trip out
west on the exchange.
I think its a cool exchange because
we come on this trip and experience
a whole new place and we also get to
play rugby, said Warwick.
The Redhawks coach was really looking forward to taking his group out
west.
I think in terms of the way the girls
are getting along, its a lot bigger than
rugby in whats happening. I know
from our end a lot of girls from Smith
Falls are seeing a part of the country
they wouldnt have had if it werent for
the program, said head coach Jacob
Swarbrick. Its been exciting, rugby has
been a good excuse to have fun and get
the girls together.
He also added that the Spartans essentially started up the Redhawks season with this exchange.
I think it was the availability of the
field and Strathmore is definitely further
in their season than us and they were
running a lot harder than we were and
it was great for our girls to see where
they need to get to, said Swarbrick.
They tuned us up and helped us start
our season.

Thunder U21 Juniors opened their
season this past week with a 4-0 record in the Calgary Womens Fastball
League and have begun the year with
a very strong hitting game.
They will play another doubleheader Thursday in Calgary before Friday
night tournament action.
The weekend will kick off the season
for the U16s, then they will compete
in a weekend travel league schedule.
Calgary Minor League action began
for the U14, (2) - U12 and (2) U10
teams with all playing six games each.
The U14 Thunder are off to Saskatoon
on the weekend for a tournament.
Reds trying to limit early season errors

The Strathmore Reds triple-A midget team

showed promise during a home-opening doubleheader against the Spruce Grove White Sox on
May 1.
I think the first game we didnt come out to
play, we struggled a bit, said bench coach Ryan
Kennedy. I think our pitching staff gave up 13
free bases, doing that puts you in a tough situation to win a game.
Despite a blowout loss in the first game, the
Reds were able stay pitch-for-pitch, but were still
making small mistakes compared to the Sox.
In the second game I was impressed that the
boys came back. Again there were some mistakes

made that shouldnt happen but we are early in
the season and there are a lot of young guys on
this team, said Kennedy.
Theyre a really well-coached squad and they
didnt make those mistakes. I think thats why
they take a 4-3 win over us, where late in that
game we make a couple plays and moved the
infield in and dont throw to first base and things
like.
He added that the mental side would need to
be worked on for next game.
Most of its mental, I dont think we made too
many physical errors (which) happen in baseball, we get over that, said Kennedy. There is
a lot of room for growth and I see it happening.
We got five guys coming back from academy, so there will

be a little more experience there and some guys will be
competing for a position.
The Reds did not play at this level last year and know they
are going to have to react a lot quicker.
I think its the speed of the game, you play tournament
play, and you know there is four games in a weekend and
you know what youre going to do with your pitching staff,
said Kennedy. In this league its solid competition every
game, every team is good in this league.
Strathmore football having problems

securing home field

Ever since the Strathmore Community Football

Association and Strathmore High School parted
ways earlier this year, there has been frustration
from the football community.
Therefore, the community football association
has been left without an official home field for the
up coming year.
The associations spring camp has started and
they were pretty fortunate that one local school
stepped in and generously gave them the field.
We were talking to a few outfits around town
and Holy Cross Collegiate took us on for access to
spring camp. Were still in discussion for the fall
because what we need for the fall is a bigger picture than what we needed for spring camp, said
President Carl Seafoot. Weve got a couple irons
in the fire and how it all plays out and see what all
the options end up being.
This came as a surprise considering that the
community football association owned most of the
equipment at the field.
Basically all the equipment was ours, we had
three storage buildings situated on the Strathmore

High School grounds, said Seafoot. The frustration is more with process and it doesnt matter
where you go it takes forever to get something
done.
There have been a few options the teams have
been considering.
Were talking with Crowther Memorial Junior
High School, weve been talking with the Ag Society. The Strathmore High School field and the
Crowther Meorial Junior High School field is on
a portion of Ag Society land, said Seafoot. Were
going to be talking with Holy Cross to see if they
have any options.
Another offer was put forth that will be kept in
mind.
Weve got one private offer to use some land
which is an interesting concept but it may not be
in the perfect location for us, said Seafoot.
The teams will be looking for the best fit for the
long term.
If we can find some place that we can come
into and were willing to put some labour into it
and put some equipment on it, (it will) help facilitate our needs, said Seafoot.
The Holy Cross Collegiate Hawks badminton

teams played some very entertaining matches at
counties hosted by them and Strathmore High
School (SHS) on April 22.
Head coach Daniel Patterson saw some impressive badminton from both levels.
At junior high level, I think counties is a great
learning experience for many of the Grade 7 players as this was their first time playing at this level.
Many of the Grade 8s were very surprised at their
success and enjoyed playing against new players
and having fun, said Patterson. Considering we
did not have many Grade 9 teams this season, the
fact that 50 per cent of them played in the zones
tournament (May 2) is a great plus, including an
awesome come-from-behind victory for our boys
doubles. We only participated in three categories
(boys singles, boys doubles and mixed doubles)
and won gold in two of them.
The senior high teams faced much stiffer competition and were able to beat all the odds.
We knew we had some stiff competition coming from an experienced and well-coached team

The Strathmore Reds midget triple A team showed a nice recovery in Game
2 of the home-opening doubleheader against the Spruce Grove White Sox,
but fell 4-3 on May 2 at Kinsmen Park.

zones. Though they did not win at zones, there
were some milestones reached for our players,
and hopefully they can use that experience as motivation for next season.
He emphasized from the first practice with the
younger group that he wanted to work on the
basics of the game. Since then the team has improved a lot in all areas.
We wanted to work on the basics in these
grades so the players can take them and improve on them for the next season, said Patterson. Things such as serving, drops, clears and
smashes became more consistent as the season
concluded.
The senior level showed more consistency in
their games.
Players were not afraid of making shots, that
in previous years, (they) would not have tried at
all. This allowed them to play a match with more
strategy and improved their mental game as well,
said Patterson. When youre not worried about
missing a shot, and just go out and do it, it really
invokes a positive attitude and confidence that
will improve their game.

Head coach Jeremy Blumes liked the pace and intensity of the players who are hoping to earn an invite to
main camp next fall.
Were looking for guys with good character, high
level of compete, good skillset as well as guys with a
high hockey IQ, said Blumes.
He made it clear that the returning players will have
had to earn their roster spots.
Based on the talent they saw around them, they
should spend their summers getting prepared to compete for a roster spot, said Blumes. Theres no guarantees, as much as we liked our first season back,

skill sets that were brought to the table.
I think there are a lot of different players that
showed well and could be future Kings that make a
difference in our line up, said Blumes.
There were some positions that the coaching staff
evaluated and would like to get more depth at for next
season.
In particular the centre ice position and smart puck
moving defensemen, he said. Were looking to get
better everywhere, but those were the top of the shopping list
Blumes plans to do a lot of recruiting for players at
different events throughout western Canada this summer.

girls rugby team have surprised many
this season, considering how young
their roster is compared to many other
teams in the league.
The Hawks have also included players from Drumheller, who could not
field a team this season, which has not
only made the team stronger but gives
the opposition a unique look.
It gives us more numbers, more
spares not as tired out by the end of
the game. Our first game was against
Chestermere and we ended up winning that one it was a good start to
the year, theyre all committed and its
easy to coach for me, said head coach
Brennan Grasdahl. I didnt know how
it was going to go you put a bunch
of girls together, its hit or miss but we
made the decision that it was in our
best interest to combine the teams and
give them good experience for this
year and were going to go into zones
as a combined squad.
As with any sport there are adjustments, and Grasdahl admits that there
have been some made going into a
league where there are almost double
the players on the field.
Were adjusting from 7s to 15s and
its a big adjustment. Theyre coming
along well, theyre really wanting to
learn and after our first game, said
Grasdahl. I asked them what they
liked better and they said 15s and
that might be because they dont have
to run as much.
Grasdahl admits that the key to success has been the girls speed and how
they are using it effectively.
Darcy Weir has been leading that
pack, shes got a lot of heart and we
made her captain this year because of
that, said Grasdahl.
It was one team in a tournament earlier this season that showed the girls
have confidence to compete with the
very best.
When we went to Jasper, we ran
into Drayton Valley that has a really
good rugby program. They ended up
putting three senior teams into that
tournament and we stayed within two
tries of them, said Grasdahl. We came
out flat in the first half against them
and in the second we came within two
tries. I was pretty disappointed with
the first half, but second half was really good to see, they recovered really
well.
What may best describe this team is
the balance from the Grade 7s on the
team all the way up to the experienced
Grade 12s.
Our Grade 12s, that are seniors,
have been so good to the Grade 7s
and 8s in teaching them pointers,
said Grasdahl.

Myrle Kelly, beloved husband, father,
grandfather, and great-grandfather
passed away on April 29, 2015 at the age of 78
years. He was predeceased by his parents, Charles
and Pearl Kelly of Chinook, Alberta, and nine brothers and sisters. He will be lovingly remembered by
his wife of 57 years, Pat; daughter Debbie (Dave)
and their children Corianne (Joel) and children
Brooklyn and Aria, Jonathan (Becky) and son Cole,
and Dillon; son Delton (Jane) and their children Steven (Stacey) and children Riley and Noah, Rhondel
(Dustin) and children Liam and Max, Justin (Cheryl)
and children Evan and Claire, Jeff, Daniel and children Geneva and Bronwyn, and Jennifer (Darren)
and children Olivia and Abby; daughter Sheilagh
(Dan) and their children Jay and Kim; son Blaine;
and son Darrin (Rhonda). Myrle is also survived
by his brother Ronald (Judy) and family of Cereal,
Alberta. In honouring Myrles wishes, no funeral
service will be held. A celebration of his life for all
his friends and family will be held on May 30, 2015
at the Travel Lodge in Strathmore at 4:00 p.m. The
family wishes to thank Dr. E. Muller and the staff at
Strathmore Hospital as well as all Myrles friends

Aged 67 years
It is with great sadness we announce the sudden
passing of Darryl. He leaves to mourn his beloved
wife, Elaine; his three children Stephan, Dave
(Bless) and Hillary and three beautiful grandchildren. Also mourning his loss is his brother Gordon,
nieces and nephews and cousins. Darryl was predeceased by his parents Max and Vera Butler and
by his in-laws John and Reta Bittorf. Darryl was in
the Royal Canadian Navy as a younger man and
became a truck driver after leaving the service.
He drove for CP Express for many years and continued on with Interlink as the company changed
course. Recently he worked as a Commissionaire
and helped with the Calgary City Police force with
one of their mail runs. At this job he was greatly
appreciated and treated to many goodies along
the way be it coffees, donuts and meals with the
various departments. He was a diligent worker and
loved his position there for he got to meet and talk
to a lot of different people. Darryl had a passion
to volunteer with Transport for Christ, a trucking
ministry. He would spend many hours at the chapel in Calgary and enjoyed interacting with every
driver that he met at the truck stop. If you wish to

be held at Strathmore Cemetery on Saturday, May

Linda Lamson passed away after a brief battle with
cancer on Saturday, May 2, 2015 at the age of 60.
Linda was born in Hanna, moving to Calgary following graduation. She worked at SAIT Student Housing where she especially enjoyed the interaction
with the students. Linda moved to Rockyford, AB in
2002 where she and husband Mike bought a farm
and built a home. Linda was active in the community volunteering at the curling rink and annual rodeo.
Linda is survived by her husband, Mike Hofer;
daughter, Melissa Bertrand; grandson Gage
Ogonoski ; mother, Evange Lamson; sisters, Brenda
(Keith) Campion, Lois (Brian) Chamberlain, Sharon
(Tim) Annas, Wilda Housch, Deb (Brent) Olmstead;

Lamson and Steve Lamson; and numerous cousins,
nieces, and nephews. Linda was predeceased by
her father Earl.
