The welding inspector is a composite person


a specialist, highly qualified in the field of
welding.
The functions of welding inspector is as the
quality representative of an organization,
which may be manufacturer, the purchaser, an
insurance company, or a government agency.
As an inspector, it is responsibility to judge the
quality of the product in relation to some form of
written specification and also must be able to
interpret this specification both as to its
limitation and intent.

QUALIFICATIONS FOR BECOMING


A WELDING INSPECTOR
1. Good physical condition be active & in good physical
condition . WI requires examination before, during & after
fabrication : Climbing around large fixtures and assemblies may
be a job requirement.
2. Good vision Ability to examine weld surface condition and
judge their acceptability according to written quality
requirements are the primary function of WI. According to AWS,
as CWI, it is required to have 20/40 vision and Jaeger J-2, at 12
inch near vision acuity, with or without corrective lenses.
3. Professional Attitude WI must maintain a professional
attitude. Attitude determines the degree of success or failure.
Success will be dependent upon the cooperation of associates
in all department.

QUALIFICATIONS FOR BECOMING


A WELDING INSPECTOR
4. Knowledge of welding & Inspection Terminology WI must
know and correctly communicate the language of welding (such
as terminology type of joints & welds, part of weld, DT, NDT,
Weld Defects, and welding process.
5. Knowledge of Drawings and Specifications WI must be
able to read and understand blueprints and drawing especially
welding & NDT Symbols.
6. Knowledge of Testing Methods WI must be aware of Test
Basics such as DT & NDT including technique, obtainable
information, and advantages & limitation the testing method .
7. Ability to Produce & Maintain Records WI must be able to
develop and maintain the records & write concise, accurate
report. The report must be simple and understandable to anyone
familiar with the project.

A WELDING INSPECTOR
8. Knowledge of Welding Process WI must understand the
knowledge of welding process and familiar with the advantages
& limitation of welding process.
9. Ability to be Trained WI are expected to posses expertise in
a number of different areas and ability to be trained in areas of
unfamiliarity.
10.Inspection Experience WI is acquired only through
inspection experience. WI must show evidence of having
performed the function of a WI such as job in design, production,
construction, Inspection, and repair

Responsibility of
A WELDING INSPECTOR
1. Interpret all welding drawings and specification
2. Check purchase order to assure that welding materials and consumables
have been properly specified
3. Check and identify materials as they are received against the purchase
specification
4. Check the chemical compositions and mechanical properties shown on
mill test reports against specified requirements
5. Investigate base material imperfections and deviation
6. Check storage of filler materials
7. Check equipment to be used
8. Check weld join preparations
9. Check joint fit-up
10. Verify the application of the approved welding procedure
11. Verify the qualifications of the welders or welding operators
12. Select production test samples
13. Evaluate the test results
14. Maintain the record
15. Prepare report

PROGRAM SERTIFIKASI WELDING INSPECTOR


TUJUAN PROGRAM:
Dengan mengikuti pelatihan inspektur las diharapkan peserta kursus
dapat memiliki pengetahuan tentang :
Tugas & Tanggung Jawab-nya sebagai Inspektur Las (welding inspector)
dan persyaratan teknis yang diperlukannya.
Kode dan Standar Internasional untuk pekerjaan Pengelasan (API, ASME
dan AWS)
Memverifikasi Welding Prosedure Specification (WPS), Prosedur Kualifikasi
(PQR) dan Mengkualifikasi Juru Las (Welder) dan atau Operator Las
(Welding Operator)
Teknologi las, Pemilihan Metoda Las serta Kontrol proses parameter las.
Metalurgi las dan berbagai metoda pencegahan cacat las.
Kontrol kualitas hasil lasan melalui pengujian DT dan NDT.

METODE PELATIHAN

Tatap muka & diskusi, agar peserta memiliki pemahaman sama thd
materi yang diberikan
Studi kasus diberikan dalam bentuk soal yang merupakan implementasi
masalah lapangan yang harus dipecahkan secara kelompok sehingga
diharapkan peserta mampu memecahkan masalah dengan berbekal
materi yang telah diperoleh sebelumnya serta pengalaman lapangan.
Praktikum Pengelasan SMAW, TIG & MIG dilakukan di laboratorium
Metalurgi Proses Departemen Metalurgi dan Material FTUI dengan
tujuan untuk memberikan kesempatan pada peserta untuk mengetahui
dan mencoba lebih jauh dalam menggunakan mesin las.
Demonstrasi pengujian merusak (DT) & uji tak merusak (NDT)
dilakukan di laboratorium Metalugi Fisik Dept Metalurgi dan Material
FTUI dengan tujuan untuk memberikan pengenalan tentang jenis
pengujian merusak dan pemeriksaan NDT pada para peserta.
Dalam kegiatan praktikum peserta dibagi menjadi beberapa kelompok
dimana tiap kelompok mendapat satu buah spesimen uji untuk satu
jenis pengujian.
